Sony already discounts the still to ship NEX-EA50UH

It even didn’t start to ship yet that Sony discounted the price of the NEX-EA50UH Camcorder with 18-200mm from $4200 to $3,599 at BHphoto (Click here).
A deal reminder: $100 discount on SLT cameras at Amazon (Click here).

9 months ago |So true. Putting it down under $2200 would be refreshing. But considering I got my A77 for $1300 with the 16-50, I’ll probably wait for Round #2 of price reductions.
Interestingly, only the A77 doesn’t get the above-mentioned $100 discount.

9 months ago |They would do it if the number of pre-orders is way below expectations.
Well, if you can get all of the world to not pre-order the A99, it may be possible…

They are pretty new to this selling stuff business, product lifespan planning and market research. Give them a chance to prove themselves, after all we all learn from mistakes.

Cliff
9 months ago |Well,…with the EA50 being an NXCAM from Sony Pro division and this new VG900 being a possible “Handycam”. I’m certain there were MANY discussions (Fighting) between the two Sony departments on the positioning of both cameras.
I’m 100% positive the NXCAM group will NOT allow the VG900 to be the only FF video camera to exist within the next year. You can bet your life that Sony Pro is working on “their” FFL camcorder too. Hell, could you imagine. FF sized sensor with only 3 megapixels on it for video? My God…the photosites would be,…what?…12 or 15 microns large?
Talk about seeing in the dark?….that’s a photon sucking vacume cleaner!!!

Will Panasonic or Canon bring units to market that simply kick butt in terms of some specification or other (and I suspect resolution – i.e., 4k)?

9 months ago |Rob,
Some of the competition may not be able to keep up. Canon for example still has to solve their CD-PD AF slowness. With a 35FF sensor, the lag is bound to be bigger. I don’t think they will be able to respond even after 2013 if they don’t get their act in this dept.
Perhaps, the only one credible to act on this is Panasonic. But then again, the question is – what 35FF lens do they have to put in there. They will end up using PL or other lens mounts. They could parlay m4/3 or 4/3 lenses. That will keep them in. But then again, at these prices, you know that serious and up-end film makers are the customers. They will see the 35FF sensor and that’s basically the clincher.
Going back to Canon, they could ignore their AF woes, and bank on film makers using manual focusing lens. But then, they cede the wedding/events/ENG market without a decent working AF. They are also in a bind, because they have introduced other cameras recently and it is not of the same bent. Their only ace in the sleeve is 4k. But Sony could match that in a year. So, Canon will have to spend heavily to get in the game and they may have to eat their earlier cameras or suffer less profits if not sales from them.
You must admit, these videocams are pretty bold. Not minor incremental innovations but ground breaking, especially if you consider the price to get them. Many in the photographic world probably won’t care, but these 2 models at Sony are pretty loud explotions. This is amplified with the semi-pro pricing. To add insult to injury, the VG20 is also slated to be upgraded. That now covers the U$1,500-2,500 bracket in terms of being NEX compatible. Sony is covering all basic price points and offering compelling prices for really large sensors including 35FF size.
A 35FF sensor on a NEX also is a harbinger and preparation for a future stills NEX camera. If one is Canon or Nikon, suddenly you are playing catchup. The problem is, the things that need catching up is starting to go further and further away from one’s reach. Some are fundamentals and needs years to prepare. No amount of R&D or money spending is going to speed up the process.

9 months ago |It was overpriced at its initial price of $4200, essentially its a fattened VG20 with the new powerzoom. IMHO its still overpriced, especially if there’s a VG30 coming and the new FF VG camera. You can get that + a few lenses for the price of the EA50 and all you lose is XLR’s (a Beachtek is only $300), its an odd duck in the Sony lineup.

This camera has a couple of big things going for it IMHO.
Form factor — its designed to actually be used in shoulder mount mode with the slide out mount. This is huge for any doc, reality, r&G type shooting and no one else (cept JVC) has it in this $$ range. Higher stability and flexibility for HH shooting.
Looks like controls will be easier to get to than on the handycams.
2 XLR’s already in place — no extra inputs (RCA’s???) to come loose
It just looks like a real camera to a client.
Power zoom control.
