Sony close to become number one in japan ;)
Sony is about to write history (ok ok it’s an exaggeration)! Since years Nikon and Canon have been always on top of the weekly japanaese sales chart. In over two years I never saw any other company become the number one in those rankings. Now look at the latest BCNranking data. In Japan the Sony NEX-5 was the second most sold system camera of the week! Now we are very close to the Canon Rebel. Message to Sony: Release soon those new lenses and you will become number one in a second

Nex sales are split between NEX3/NEX5 and NEX3/5 Bundles (single or dual) plus the variety of NEX 3/NEX5 Colors
All combined = NEX #1
Asians have a small …….Hands so they love smaller cameras.

I am sorry, but it is getting annoying how everybody is so excited over the fact that some NEX model sells well during a week in Japan! If you are interested in photography this means squat. If you are interested in economics, it still means squat. I am not trying to be bashful, but can someone explain to me why this is important to him?

Wait for the NEX-7 to complete the set with full 7 series controls, optional EVF, evevn better sensor, integral flash plus hotshoe, IBS, wireless control with Sony flash, etc….plus a lot more lenses including C.Zeiss. OK my wish list but why is that lot not possible.
Having said that I’m after the A77 but I would get both if money was no object.
I suspect that is also Sony’s plan….multiple bodies for consumers with different capabilities but same IQ. Why not?

About BCN ranking: it shows the sales of specific kits during a week in Japan.
1. It doesn’t show market share.
2. Given that same models are split into several entries depending on colour for example, the ranking is unreliable.
3. Cameras from the consumer and pro markets are mixed together, which is somewhat pointless.

The only thing the ranking says is that it sells well, which shows that people are interested. This is easy to understand as it is, as you said, a nice machine, it doesn’t cost much, is the single APC-S sized mirrorless (well, except NX, but Samsung’s presence in Japan isn’t great anyway) and it is sold in a country which isn’t biased against Sony.
It doesn’t say if it’s number one or what it’s market share is, etc. So again, please do tell me what is everyone so excited about? And yes, that is a honest question.

2 years ago |The NEX5 #1 selling DSLR in Japan at the moment. The RebelT2i used be the #1 but after NEX5′s price dropped to around $500, sales increased dramatically.
