6 months ago |what a coincidence.. just today i tested this lens in the Sony store and did not buy it. in my opinion its too steep a price tag for what it is optically.
the built, size, handling and most of all weight are excellent but the images sadly were not.. i compared to the Alpha Samyang 14mm prime which is my workhorse, just very bulky. and the Sel 10-18 had lots more distortion very high CA, needed manual focusing and was noticably less sharp especially towards the edges.
i will wait for the 12mm Zeiss lens which hopefully will be only around a 3rd more expensive, but 24mp deserve a great lens. for now i´ll stick to the awesome Samyang.

6 months ago |i should mention i only tested wide open f4 to see the worst i could get.. compared to f4 on the Samyang (which is a f2.8 lens) ..so not the fairest test
as its zoom against fast prime.. also i shot with tripod and without oss

No miracle! cannot get a very small zoom lense with top image quality. The 16-50 is clearly not as good as we could dream. Anyway:
- did you notice the RAW files are slightly wider than jpg? why? because the wide angle of this lense is not really 16mm, but rather 14mm… those 2 extra mm are clearly poor quality (soft, corner vigneting, strong distortion…), but they are not intented to be used as a part of the picture, but only to provide some required pixels for getting a proper 16mm after software correction! So, of course, if you consider the whole picture on a wide angle RAW file, you’ll be disapointed, but doing so, you are judging the lense for something that go beyong it’s official spécifications. Once corrected, the result is not that bad, and give a rael 16mm
- It’s not very fair to compare a prime lense (Voigtlander 20mm) and a zoom lense (especialy a pancake zoom). Of course the prime lense is sharper, that’s one of the 2 reasons why prime lenses still exist when we can build more versatile zooms (the other reason is max apertune)! It would have been more interesting to make a comparison with Sony or other brand 18-55 kit zoom, and with Panasonic 14-42X, that is not a very good lense too.

6 months ago |That’s very strange review ofcourse. Dude, used JPEG’s a lot for comparison and complained about blue case which is most likely a firmware correction for white balance. Yes, it’s off, but it does not have anything to do with the lense itself. You’ve already mentioned the obvious problem with oversized RAW for 16mm and ridiculousness of comparing a zoom with a prime. And yes, there’s a lense correction profile for Lightroom. Just google it, Mr. Reviewer. http://forums.adobe.com/message/4857562
