Sony NEX-7 reviews roundup and firmware update suggestions by Björn Utpott (in/out of Stock status)
Digital Photography School (Click here) posted a final NEX-7 review: “A significant camera that could shoot right up there with most DSLRs, but is as easy to use as a snapshot camera.”

Our reader Björn Utpott (Click here) wrote a long list of NEX-7 firmware update suggestions. Read the list carefully, I completely agree with him
NEX-7 In/out of Stock status:
I have been told that NEX-7 bodies will arrive in stores next week in Europe and USA. Here are the links to the stores that will have them in Stock soon: BHphoto (Click here), Sonystore Germany (Click here), Sonystore France (Click here), Sonystore Netherland (Click here), Sonystore Italy (Click here), Sonystore Sweden (Click here), Sonystore Switzerland (Click here).
And the auction rpice on eBay for new NEX-7 is dramatically lower. A good sign that now many stores are shipping the NEX-7 bodies. The current lowest price is $1750 (Click here to see the auction). That’s $400 less compared to the price four days ago!

4 weeks ago |One other thing that I would add that annoys the hell out of me – the camera continuously hunts for focus in AF mode. This is really distracting when you have the camera up to your eye and the viewfinder keeps flickering. Sony have done this to try and speed up
slow autofocus. This happens
Between shots when you changing settings in the menu, which is a drain on battery life.

4 weeks ago |It sounds like you turn continuous af on . Turn it to single af it should be fine

4 weeks ago |I suppose I really need to try out the NEX-7 in store to see how those control dials operate. When the DigitalRev guy explained how each one functions in the different shooting modes, it sounded exactly like the system for the front and rear dials of a pro-DSLR (except with added EV comp. function), so I am really curious why he found it confusing.
Gunnar
4 weeks ago |bacause he finds anything more complex then a lego camera confusing.. especially if labeled Sony
this really was no review.. and with his critique he forgot to mention that the camera actually shows what each dial does on the screen, so there is no need at all to memorize, but perhaps his eyesight is so bad, he did´nt see it, which could also explain his notorious EVF dissing..
Jiri
4 weeks ago |I have no practical experience with the NEX-7 so far, but the more I read the individual comments by the happy users I want (similarly as Björn Utpott) the NEX as my main camera system too. His proposals for firmware updates are good and realistic, I believe.

4 weeks ago |I agree with Björn, but I would add:
11) More professional options for RAW auto bracketing. Currently the maximum is 3 frames with +- 0.7
Björn Utpott
4 weeks ago |Very useful suggestion. I sometimes use exposure series to create HDR images from high contrast interiors (interiors with a view through a window). 3 frames with a range of 1.33 stops isn’t nearly enough
Interestingly, Auto HDR can shoot a sequence with a range of 6 EV. That works pretty well, although you’re limited to shooting JPEG. Still I find the resulting auto HDR images look quite natural, something that requires quite a bit more effort when you’re combining the individual exposures your self.

4 weeks ago |Kai’s reviews are entertaining in part because of the way he exaggerates any of the camera’s idiosyncrasies. It’s fun to watch him fiddling around with the Tri-Navi controls. In reality, the UI feels somewhat unconventional at first when you’re used to other mirrorless bodies, although – like Ben points out – it’s not that different from how the twin dials operate on professional DSLRs. Sony takes it a degree further though, assigning a range of different functions to the control dials based on the mode you’re in. It takes a while to get used to but when you do it’s a highly efficient way of changing settings.
Pei
4 weeks ago |Maybe SONY should consider moving one dial to the grip in front of the shutter like a Nikon.
Solo
4 weeks ago |or like a Sony? You realize this is how the A77 and pro A850/900 operate?
Pei
4 weeks ago |I know, I said Nikon because I shoot Nikon
Mike
4 weeks ago |This is the first time where I feel Kai isn’t being fair. He complains about the nex-7 being idiosyncratic but never mentioned any of the crazy quirks with the x100.
I bet if the nex-7 looked like his Leica he would be trying to hump it.

4 weeks ago |Andrea any information concerning the nex lenses roadmap ? I was hoping it came in january ..
thanks

4 weeks ago |I did not know that the video was from DigRev, if I had known I save wasting time watching stupidity. From some time now, I ignored these unprofessional analysis.
I wrote a longer reply, but i erased it, too much words; I simply write this:
- UNPROFESSIONAL -
Pei
4 weeks ago |Still cannot find the -UNPROFESSIONAL- reply. Besides, what do you consider a professional review? Something technical from DPreview, a sensor spec from DxOMark, internet photographers like Steve Huff and Ken Rockwell or something from celebrity like Annie Leibovitz?
DigitalRev is aimed at the casual photographer and people that just wants to know more about photography. Too boring and it would turn people off. It is akin to Carl Sagan explaining theoretical physics to the layman. I doubt people would like to know more if he spend 45 minutes writing equations on a board.

The beginning of the video is a clear allegory of what this commenter would like to do with the Sony brand.
Everyone can love and hate manufactures they want (although, except for specific reasons and realistic, I think this is stupid and of maturity of a teenager). But what is really unprofessional and absolutely ridiculous, is to let those tastes to interfere in your work as an analyst.
Most important: you can dress up as a clown, do jokes about the cam, laugh at the manufacturer, and to do a good job making funny reviews; BUT what you cannot do is NOT TO BE IMPARCIAL TIME AFTER TIME, because then you are not a credible analyst.

4 weeks ago |Hating Sony is a gimmick. IT’S UNPROFESSIONAL A BLOO BLOO BLOO just means you’re not watching to be entertained; a 1080p video isn’t the best way to show off a high-megapixel-camera’s performance anyways. The only thing I took from it was that the Tri-Navi controls might not provide a lot of resistance.
PS you didn’t have to waste time watching it, you could have navigated away from the page
Helena
4 weeks ago |Bloo bloo? So hard to understand that you can make a comic review being impartial?. This guy hates Sony, and he is working!
Kai is far far away from having the Top Gear “touch”. And in Top Gear, after all the jokes, burned mobile homes, destroyed toyotas…they said you the facts with all the brands. This guy NOT. Because he is…UNPROFESSIONAL.
Nick
4 weeks ago |@ Helena:
Top gear impartial ?
I think Jezza and friends would be quite offended by that accusation.
Truth is they have their prefrences and they make no apology for them (nor for anything else for that matter).
If you were into cars instead of cameras you might well be describing them as unprofessional in capital letters. Many people do. The rest of us don’t care, we just enjoy the show and if we want to actually buy a car we’ll assimilate what they say, and also consult other sources of information.
As I said before, whats really unprofessional is when people pretend to be all serious and knowledgable and just dribble on with half truths and random factoids, and occasionally reveal that they really don’t understand much about what they’re going on about.
So many reviews out there are genuinely and insidiously unprofessional – hard to see why you have such a downer on this little clown just because he disses your favourite brand.

4 weeks ago |I totally agree with you Helena. That video is just soooooo stupid. Just ridiculous!
Ben
4 weeks ago |I believe “Hanlon’s Razor” may apply in this case: “Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.”
I began to realize that apart from the tomfoolery to make the reviews interesting or get fans riled up, he is actually quite unfamiliar with the workings of the camera. For example, he didn’t know the dial settings could be locked but spent a lot of time about how they inadvertently changed.
So what you are basically getting is not a review of the use of the camera, but a review of the “first hour of the use of the camera for someone who has not read the manual or done any preparatory work.”
The amount of videos these guys put out, they simply don’t have enough time or resources to take an exhaustive look at each camera or equipment. The best we can hope is that these kinds of videos prompts others to take a closer look at other more fleshed out reviews for the details.
Nick
4 weeks ago |I’ll take this review anytime over the worthy Cnet “review” of the A77 posted recently.
A “professional” review by a blithering idiot is far more misleading than this obviously tounge in cheek style presentation. Anyone who bases their buying decision entirely on this opinion piece is a moron. Anyone who thinks this is supposed to be objective is barking up the wrong tree.
There is plenty of information out there. There are screeds of self-important pontificating by the luminaries of the lansdscape. You can even download the instruction manual if you want.
Trouble is some people can’t tell the difference between flippancy and immaturity (or between sombre sobriety and informed integrity).
This guy is trying something different. As people have already commented, he’s setting himself up as the Jeremy Clarkson of cameras. A dubious objective you might say, but I actually think he’s succeeding. And there’s far less scope for being silly with cameras than there is with cars, so I think he deserves a bit of credit.
This video actually made me laugh.
That lame Cnet “review” of the A77 almost made me cry.
And if he doesn’t like Sony, well, you know what, I think I can just about deal with that

4 weeks ago |Come on guys seriously… we are talking about Kai!! what did you expect? a serious review? XD
ANYWAY.. if you need/want more professionality, look at the Steve Huff site.. he is really scrupulous and complete..
Jiri
4 weeks ago |The two SonyAlphaLab videos with the Fotodiox Mount Adapter with adjustable iris show exactly what I am affraid of: a strong vignetting when stopping the iris down. That is IMHO unavoidable if you use an iris behind the lens.
The Conurus adapter solves this problem, but for a price behind a reasonable level.

4 weeks ago |Sadly, this web site is putting out some aweful video reviews just now. Kai seems to have a thing about Sony cameras as his review of the NEX-5n and the NEX-7 have been more comedy than anything.
This so called review is no exception.
