Sony press release aftermath…(Updated with Adorama preorders)
It’s pretty obvious that most SonyAlphaRumors readers are not particularly excited about the new Sony stuff. The A37, the NEX-F3 and the two newly announced slow zooms are not relevant news for us already owning NEX and Alpha cameras. I understand the call for new NEX and Alpha lenses and new FF stuff. But you should not get too frustrated. All that kind of stuff is coming within the next 3-4 months. So you really don’t have to wait a long time anymore!
Coming back to today’s announcement I have to say that overall the A37 and NEX-F3 are nice cameras. I am a bit less happy about the lenses

Renato S.
2 years ago |pancakes? how about just normal fast primes?
FUJI X-Mount started yesterday and it has more fast primes than the NEX system. NX system started about the same time as the NEX and has tons of nice lenses, including pancakes and fast primes.
so is it wrong to feel disrespected as a NEX consumer or should I just be complacent and pretend everything is ok? I don’t think NEX users are asking too much.

2 years ago |Are you guys still asking for better lenses?
NEX may be like beta video. Superior in every way, except the way that counts (availability in terms of video cassettes, optics in terms of cameras).
Almazar80
2 years ago |How about taking good pictures with the lenses that are available? Surely, people can do that with the lenses currently available for the NEX. Sometimes (heck, always, really) it’s not the lens or camera that can make a great image. The incessant whining in this forum is amusing in many ways. One would almost assume that the equipment Sony has provided is incapable of being great tools for great photography. And yet. Many talented photographers use NEX and Alpha cameras to make great photographs. Few of them complain about the lack of lenses or whatever. They just learn to use the tools that they have to maximal effect. And they create art. And photographic statements of note.

2 years ago |I think many of us are waiting to see if Sony is anything more than 3x and 5x series of cameras and kit lenses in different colors.
How many years have it now been since Sony marketed a new 8x or 9x camera?
The only G full-frame lens released in about 4 years is the 500mm and it was 2010 when the last A-mount full-frame Zeiss was released so I think it’s understandable.

2 years ago |I totally agree with you. They’re counting too much on people’s patience. As admin said “all that kind of stuff is coming within the next 3-4 months”, which is an era if we talk about electronics: therefore we might have some (hopefully good) surprises, if the new camera’s gonna be updated with the best before official release. I hope they’re gonna release something soon, or Sony’s gonna risk to lose a lot of customers. In the meantime, I’m gonna get myself an A900, never know!

2 years ago |Still, general feeling is that Sony is not taking advantage of an excellent potential market out there. The cameras are there, and are very nice, but we still miss the lenses.
I wonder if Sony intends to produce the core system only, waiting for other producers (such as Sigma) to compensate for the lack of lenses…

2 years ago |Exactly. Sony should finally start introducing serious stuff and not all these small tidbits. I understand they make a lot of money with it but with how much low to mid end stuff can they flood the market before they get the ‘real’ stuff out for prosumer and pros?
I don’t have a NEX and without good pancakes I’ll never get one because it doesn’t make sense for me to end up with a second camera which is almost as big as my SLR with less functionality.
A99, get on with it already. No more excuses all the time, other companies have lots of fullframes out. Yes it’s SLT but that can’t be the only excuse for this awful long development time and I doubt that it will be that much better than the Canon 1D or even 5D.
You wanna play with the pros, behave like one. I’m not saying that Canikon does everything right, god no, but they seem to get things done quicker.
I’m still in disbelief that they’ve removed tethered shooting from the A77, a prosumer camera and top of the line of their actual production. And when asked why they removed it since the A700 you get responses like if there’s enough demand we will consider putting it into a firmware update. Seriously, is that how you run your business? Do you need an invitation to add useful functionality? Do you think people buy a camera because there’s a chance that you ‘might’ implement a feature sometime in the future?
Sorry about the rant but sometimes I just don’t understand you Sony.

Mostly because all the journalist where using Nikon and Canon. when was the last time you saw a Sony alpha Ad? I still see nikon and Canon ads on tv all the time. Sony has a huge advantage in Video where they where the dominate player for a very long time. That experience is showing up in their cameras now because thats where they think they can lead.

AG
2 years ago |The A37 should not exist! Sony is just hurting the SLT line-up with a low end model that has low resolution EVF and LCD screen. The lower spec’ed EVF doesn’t help SLT’s brand perception. Sony does nothing to educate and market the advantages of SLT. The average person does not have time to compare or study and it is too easy for Canon and Nikon to compete on name alone. Sony really needs to distinguish itself with a better focus on how the cameras are used. SLT is a bridge to a completely mirror less future. It has matured in a few years and they are great products, but don’t get much respect.
Further, the A37 doesn’t make sense when thinking about the NEX. Those customers that don’t want to buy more lenses and want a small camera body should be steered toward the NEX. The E-mount lens system needs a lot work if it is to be the future. Sony risks alienating enthusiasts with a weak lens line-up. A big gamble considering competitors like m4/3 and forthcoming Canon CSC.
It’s really too bad Sony is so good at technology, but drops the ball on the business end. It would be interesting to see actual sales numbers on SLT and NEX models along with lens sales.

2 years ago |It does indeed look pretty nice. Perhaps the modern version of Max 28-135? Can hope…
But I have to wonder, did Sony research the top subjects for newbie togs when taking these sample images? We have a cat shot, and a flower shot. Pretty good ones at that! Really hits home.
Carl
2 years ago |The 28-135 was a really expensive lens back in its day. Basically a G lens, before Minolta brought in that branding scheme. The 18-135 is more of a consumer product, and priced in that range. Still, from what little is out there from it, it looks at least as good as the 16-105, except prehaps the bokeh.
I chucked over the choice of samples too. The street shot looks pretty good, though.

2 years ago |what about the a-57 users that bought the (basically) same camera? It looks like they’re cannabilizing the market a little. I bought the a-57 mainly for it’s video functions (versus the canon’s), and didn’t realize the limitations.
1) The fold out screen is NOT tripod friendly. Corrected with this version.
2) Low light video is capped at 3200 ISO. This does NOT make sense. The camera advertises low light to 25000, but it’s in the small print about video.
3) It’s a pain the a$$ to adjust user defined shooting options (creative style). It is only accessible via the AEL button, and not available in M (manual) mode.
4) 60p video is basically useless since most NLE programs won’t recognize 60p, and the bit rate is too slow to get anything useable. If you do get a NLE (my experience with FCP X) to import it, it does NOT like it because it’s AVCHD and has to transcode EVERY frame, bringing editing down to a standstill while it re-renders EVERY frame..
However, I think it will be a great product to compete with the Canon Rebel line, since most people are buying these cameras for video functions. Canon has revolutionized video, and Sony is smart for taking them on, I just wish I hadn’t already bought the A-57, since I will probably have to buy this camera and the A-57 will sit on the desk gathering dust (unless they do unlikely and make the A-57 more functional with some updates via firmware).
Matt
2 years ago |How is the A37 better than the A57 apart from maybe the way the screen tilts? In regards to all other comments on video, the A37 is the same – oh except it doesn’t DO 60p. Well the A57 doesn’t have to do 60p either, but at least on that model you have the choice.
The A57 clearly beats the A37 in every regard, except with the possibility of the Way the screen tilts (and the possibly the body size, but that’s subjective).
Steve G.
2 years ago |I would not go so far to say that Canon revolutionized video at this point. They are actually behind and way overpriced. Sony is far superior to Canon in image stabilization. I own a Canon HFS100 and I regret buying it. Low light is junk and the image stabilization sucks. Canon’s newer camcorders aren’t that much better.
I own an A57 and it outperforms my camcorder in many regards. For the price it’s good value.
Having said that, I am not excited about these products.

2 years ago |I’ll take a wild guess and assume the current 18-200 lens is still optically better. I hate the fact that I must get it in cheap looking silver!

2 years ago |Nice to see such enthusiasm but its pretty obvious Sony has ditched the Pro end of its range leaving guys like me stranded. I’ve been considering buying a bunch of very expensive Carl Zeiss primes to do some travel / pano work but whats the point? From my point of view I’m better to cut my losses now and jump ship to Nikon who dont play games re their camera line and their customer expectations.
Even if Sony brings out the fabled A99 how much better will it really be than the A900? both are 24 mpxl. If the output printer is a large format Epson its going to be very difficult to see any real advantage between both cameras when going to print.
This ’36 megapixel coming soon’ routine is tedious. All the speculation is a pain in the butt, for me the camera is a serious tool not a piece of bling, if someone else brings out a better camera I’ll use it instead. If Sony was going to bring out a Pro camera which could compete with the Nikon it would have done it by now – I say it isnt going to happen.
I’m really annoyed that I made the mistake of thinking Sony was serious about their committment to the Pro end of the market.

2 years ago |I love all the spexperts on SAR (that’s Self Proclaimed Experts). Sony NEED pro blah blah is all I ever hear! What Sony NEED are what Sony has just announced, these are the things that keep Sony in the market at all, for them to even consider making higher end models. These are the things that shift quantities, so get off your fricken high horses spexperts!
These same spexperts are always whining that they must have the biggest, best, most advanced and best performing cameras, but then whenever any price is mentioned, it is too expensive.
These same spexperts also seem to think that Canon and Nikon can do NO wrong, that they release new pro level stuff every week and it is all spectacularly perfect in every conceivable way. The grass as they say is always greener. Most of these spexperts will not buy 99% of the stuff they proclaim that Sony NEED. 4 years since the A99, 4 years since the 5D MkII – see a pattern there? My bet is the A99 will have a far far greater advancement over the A900 than the MkIII has over the MkII. But hey, I’m sure in your heads Canon have a MkIV coming out in the next few months, because that is what it’s like on the other side, new pro gear daily, go, go quickly, I hear it’s awesome, and no-one ever bitches about a pack of anything at all because it is photography nirvana.
lorenzino
2 years ago |Well, I am not an expert.
But from what I know, Sony cameras are very good. What is missing, compared to the competition, are the lenses. It is a fact that whatever genre you are interested in, you are able to find what you need in the Canikon camp, while this is not true in the Sony camp.
Still Canon and Nikon are expensive. What we humble people hope is to get the same quality (in cameras, lenses and overall system completeness) for a lower price, or better quality for the same price. After all Sony is still the underdog, here, so they have to price their products accordingly.
General impression is that Sony prices are more or less equal to Canon and Nikon offerings (if A99 price is confirmed). At this point comparisons with those systems (and I mean: systems, not cameras) are obvious, and detrimental to Sony
zinkplated
2 years ago |Just one other point. The speculation re Sony producing a higher resolution camera to replace the A900 has been going on since mid 2011, dragged on thru 28 – 32 – 36 megapixels … now speculation says maybe it will (maybe) surface in mid 2013! thats 2 years + of rumours and the A900 is already over 4 years old, 6 years! Sorry Sony.. times up.
I’d be quite happy to get exactly the same A900 platform + a 36mpxl sensor, the A900 is a strong, well built simple workhorse which when coupled with the Carl Zeiss lenses outperformed everything except medium format – forget fancy SLT viewfinders and useless electronic jewelry, apart from live view, all I want are sharp hi res 16bit RAW files to work on.
Clyde
2 years ago |zinkplated “I’d be quite happy to get exactly the same A900 platform + a 36mpxl sensor”.
I know! Right! Even if it didn’t have video or SLT… no changes whatsoever… just larger sensor with a little improved high iso performance. No improvement to AF, no extra features… just an identical camera that accepts all a900/850 accessories, batteries, grips, cards. Would be so freaking easy… and honestly, it could be 48mp (2x24mp APS-C sensors) and blow the entire photo biz away with practically no changes.
They could lower the buffer rate, lower the shoot rate, and even remove the GREEN AUTO setting.
It wouldn’t even need video, though could have an option for one. Or even better have an option without the low pass filter.
They’d sell millions of them on a production platform that’s already tooled up. And they could double the price and they’d still sell.
Instead we get nothing but more market confusion with repeat cameras and repeat lenses. It’s so uninspiring. Especially when companies like Leica have balls big enough to release B&W only cameras, and Nikon balls up to release an E version of 800. Gutsy moves get attention for the entire lineup.
Consumers love and reward courage.
Matt
2 years ago |Yeah do that Sony, you will literally sell dozens of cameras.
Clyde

2 years ago |Point being, enthusiasts and amateurs purchase low end Nikons because of their top tier cameras. Same reason Dodge puts a Viper on the showroom floor. They sell very few top Niko Vipers… but the effect it has on the consumer sales is the best marketing anyone could hope for.
If Sony would release just one puritan photo machine in the vein of Leica or Hasselblad, they would set themselves way outside the box of traditional market thinking. And they wouldn’t have to do anything more than put a fat chip inside an already existing camera.
a900 “Special Edition” sounds pretty good to me… Strip down to bare essentials with a big fat chip monster inside… Worked for Ford when the 427 got stuffed into the AC Cobra… Few sold, but everyone and their cheap sister in law wants to ride in one… Let’s get the Mustang instead.
lorenzino
2 years ago |Well, enthusiasts and amateurs buy low-end Nikon and Canon cameras also because it is possible to use and incredible array of high-end lenses.
An entry-level camera with an excellent sensor and excellent lenses produce excellent pictures. A state-of-the-art camera with an excellent sensor and excellent lenses produce excellent pictures as well, but in more variegated conditions. Point is: not everybody will experience those “variegated” conditions. So it is definitively wise to buy a low-end camera if you know you are not going to need 12 frames per minute, a tough body, or the like.
Plus the lenses do not loose value as quickly as the camera…
zinkplated
2 years ago |Matt your a bore, I work with cameras professionally and have done so for nearly 30 years, I buy the best I can afford and expect the best results. I also research cameras thoroughly before I committ, which is what I did with the Sony A900 which at the time cost way less than the Nikon D3 and with the CZ lens optically performed better. The cheap point and shoot cameras are obviously the bread and butter of all the manufacturers, they do a good job. But if as a manufacturer you commit to the Pro end of the market it comes with genuine expectations from those who invest there that they will continue to support their (albeit fewer) Pro customers – not ditch them.
I was very dissapointed when I heard here that Sony had given Nikon the rights to their 36mpxl sensor for 12 months, what does that say about Sonys committment to its own customer base?

I’m really happy with how my A900 works, classic layout, love the simple FN control, viewfinder cant get any better, built like a tank, I use it on a tripod so hi ISO performance is of no importance to me, as I said all its missing is live view and dropping the Hi Pass filter is a great idea. Take a look at a Hasselblad, so simple, a mini b/w lcd screen and the most complex thing in its software is the choice of bracketing sequence. Thing is the quality it produces, which is astounding. That’s what it’s all about.

2 years ago |Sony seems determined to alienate their customers. They seem to me to get more bad press than good in gaming, tvs, now photo. Their engineering can be amazing (Nex 7), but their marketing is horrible. They seem to treat enthusiasts as enemies they need to control rather than evangelists they need to excite.
If they were more open about roadmap they would generate enthusiasm. Their frequent little announcements may generate more opportunity for press, but when most forum reactions are bad enthusiasts turn negative and word of mouth turns negative. I know two people bought Nex because I referred Nex. Now I do not suggest Nex or any other Sony product. If no improvement in customer relations by Sony soon enough I will start warning people to stay away from Sony.
I hope Sony makes building good customer relations the top priority for marketing. Even great engineering can’t save Sony from their current marketing…

The only reason I even know what Sony cameras are is the NEX-7 and it’s ground breaking implementation of new technology and sensor design, otherwise I would still be a Canon guy. I’m still using my 5DMK2 to do all my studio work with an occasional renting of a 2 1/4. Sony now has a chance to make the jump into the professional market because they have our attention. If Sony doesn’t come out with a full frame camera that is better than the Nikon D800 they will have lost all of us that are now paying attention. Canon must be very close to correcting the mistake they made with the 5DMK3.

2 years ago |I have the (very) strong impression that Sony does not really care about what is written here or in general in American or European fora. Sony points at the Chinese market, where there is not brand loyalty towards Canon or Nikon. Hence the multi-color versions (so fashionable in this part of the world, God only knows why). Also Nikon and Pentax (and Olympus) are shifting their attention to this market (Nikon with the 1 series, Pentax with whatever, Olympus with the Epl and mini series). Canon in MIA, so far…

2 years ago |If anything is the worst part of the system – it’s the special-purpose accessories and lenses. They almost don’t exist. No T&S. No APS-C Fisheye. No long macro lens. No macro lens with magnification higher than 1:1. No 600mm tele. No set of UWA lenses (no UWA primes, no UWA zooms besides semi-good 11-18).
Flash system is actually very good once you use it with more than 2 flashes for longer than 30 seconds. Quick-shift-bounce thingy gives you a lot of option to manipulate your setup while the controls themselves have a lot of potential. Oh, and the hotshoe: the only one in the world that’s quick, secure and comfortable (try switching quickly two flases on Nikon – lol). IMO Sony created system of flashes that beats one Canon has.

2 years ago |Have you tried shooting wireless flash with NEX-7? There is a considerable delay. It’s not instant like on a900/700/200. And why isn’t the built in flash capable of being trigger? Must use the huge 58am or 20am as trigger. There is something goofy with multi wireless flash on NEX-7. I have a lot of experience with this since early 1990′s with Max9xi. Something is amiss with mirrorless.

The NEX-F3 is quite a compelling package now, even if it’s the ugliest camera Sony’s ever made; it’s got the 16.1 MP sensor, the latest Bionz processor, a pop-up flash, and compatibility with the OLED viewfinder. Suddenly it’s more attractive than the 5N, and for less cash.
The lens offerings look solid, nothing to bemoan there. Those lenses aren’t for me, but Sony is already making the lenses that are.

2 years ago |It’s not so much that the cameras are bad, (the F3 looks nice), but rather so many releases on existing products that it feels more like a fix for things that should have been there in the first place.
The pony trick gimmicks combined with over saturated lens designs and color shifts being touted as upgrades all adds up to lacking substance. It’s like gorging at McDonalds, but realizing there is absolutely no nourishment in your bloated belly.
Just wish the devotion was put towards real features that we’ve been crying for, for a long time, rather than all the market confusion and backpedalling that seems as though it’s just correcting previous mistakes.
Smart TC in RAW? No.
Video Button Lock? No.
Manual Audio? No.
Sweep Panorama in RAW? No.
Remote with Bracketing? No.
Auto Portrait? Yes.
Smile Detection? Yes.
Which features would you rather have? Which ones have we been asking for?

2 years ago |Smart TC in RAW? No. – Impossible from technical point of view and doesn’t make any sense from logical point of view. If anything: sRAW would be appreciated. If you want Smart TC in RAW: Make a RAW picture, develop it, and than throw TIFF into one of apps that allow you choosing the re-sizing algorithm. It’ll give you better results than Smart TC cause some types of pictures work better in one algorithm and other in another.
Video Button Lock? No. – Agreed, this would be welcome, although not by me, I’m a photographer.
Manual Audio? No. – Same as above.
Sweep Panorama in RAW? No. – Impossible from technical point of view. If Sony however would make files-pretending-to-be-RAWs people would start throwing shit at company assuming straight away that no RAWs from Alpha cameras are RAWs or other crap like that
Remote with Bracketing? No. – Didn’t we had it already? I’m 99% sure that this feature exists in A900.

2 years ago |Smart TC is RAW is not impossible. It’s no different than shooting APS-C mode on a900, which I do all the time for any job that doesn’t require full resolution. A ton of jobs are shot just for web, 600pxl max size. No need to rifle through thousands of full resolution images. Many times lower resolution is desired for convenience and speed to better meet job budget requirements.
Video Lock is for photographers, like you. Keeps from accidentally hitting the button while on a stills assignment. Half a dozen times now I’ve gone to shoot on NEX-7 only to realize that the last 20min has been recording video of the floor. That’s a lot of camera/card use just because the button got bumped.
Why bother with super duper HQ video without the sound control to go along with it. It’s like serving cake without a plate and fork.
Sweep Panorama could at least provide a larger file worth printing, even if still a jpg. Hardly worth printing the way they are.
Remote with bracketing is impossible for any Sony using an IR remote. Only those which can accept wired remote will allow for that. And camera eats battery thrice as fast when in IR mode.

2 years ago |“But you should not get too frustrated. All that kind of stuff is coming within the next 3-4 months. So you really don’t have to wait a long time anymore!” – This info is probably first really good news we had since a while. New lenses sound REALLY promising and I’m truly excited about them, while A99 is still a big mystery, we’ll see how much “bang for a buck” will it have.
In general: I was very worried that 2012 ill be another wasted year by Sony towards A-mount. Seems like it’s not the case lucky enough:)

2 years ago |I hope all the other lenses that Sony will release later will have an excellent optics & performance. Hopefully with consonant apertures some come with 1.8/2.0/2.2/2.8/4.0 & 8.0.
Waiting is the key with Sony releases

Just because of a total absence of vision? Long term strategy ?
I am not a manager neither I have any experience on that…
And I am far for any lesson to anybody…
But how can we end up with:
A33
A35: remove of tilt screen
A37: tilt screen back
Nex-3
Nex-C3: more compact
Nex-3F: bigger

Mr pessimist
2 years ago |I wonder how big an e-mount 18-135 would have to be? That might be quite interesting. I quite fancy a little nex as a take-anywhere little friend to my a77 and 18-135mm would be much more appealing than 18-55+55-200. The 18-200 is too big to be a lightweight ‘anywhere’ lens – I may as well pack the a77 with 18-250…

2 years ago |Plus 1000 for that mate. The A900 is a beauty in good light (I have a d700 for very low light and stobism) the color performance is stunning. Stick that fancy new 36MP sensor in there, tune it (filters) for amazing color reproduction ala A900, put a more durable shutter (good to 300K) and f***ing release it!! Innovation is only good as long as you can release you innovative products before the competition comes out with something better! Hurry up Sony..
