(SR2) Little NEX-7m rumor…

An anonymous source just sent me a small rumor about the NEX-7 successor. The name of the camera will be “NEX-7m” and it will feature several improvements like increased max shutter speed, enhanced NR and ISO range, etc.
I hope trusted sources can confirm or deny that rumor. Meantime keep your feet on ground!

5 months ago |Untill Sony put a GPS inside of the NEX range of camera’s I’m not interested… Why it’s included in much smaller and lower end Sony camera’s as well as higher end SLT camera’s but NOT the NEX is beyond me… In my opinion the NEX is the perfect camera to have GPS included due to it’s size, photo quality and portability for holidays..etc…
Come on Sony if it’s due to battery drain ship it turned OFF by default and let people enable it if they chose… Also time for a refresh on your battery range, keep the current battery physical specifications (so they are backwards compatible) but increase capacity with latest technology’s especially with your big push with EVF’s this should be a high priority for you..
Just my 2 cents worth and hope someone at Sony is listing as the vast majority of Sony shooters I speak with say better battery performance would be very warmly received. (We all thank Sony for keeping the same SLT battery going for so long but a capacity upgrade is now needed with A99 and A77..etc)

5 months ago |Noone cares about gps in DSLRs and NEX7 is intended to compete against them. Just use an iPhone and sync the gps datum in post.
Jonathan
5 months ago |Hi John thanks for your insightful personal view, however myself and well over 70% of other shooters I speak to all say the Nex range need a GPS so in my circle/group of shooters it’s definitely not “no one” cares, the vast majority does seem to care including myself…
Also why NOT include it? it cost just about NOTHING to include and can be turned off IF battery is an issue for you? But especially when travailing GPS is a really great feature, also when you have multiple camera’s the time of your pictures is also synced up and you don’t have to remember to set the time on both camera’s manually to the same for when working a shoot with multiple camera’s. I think the GPS feature is a highly underrated bit of kit and using an iphone/other GPS device in my opinion is not great. I personally have a couple PhotoTracker devices (GPS loggers) as well as phone apps and compared to build in GPS inside the camera of my A77 and A99 it’s another world!
No one can answer me WHY NOT include it if it can ship OFF as default and costs next to nothing any way? One of the great features of the NEX is portability for travelling and when many people (including loads of consumers) would love to track were there photo’s have been taken..etc
John Maverick
5 months ago |Good points. I just don’t feel the presence or otherwise of an inbuilt gps should be a make-or-break issue for the camera.
As for why not, SONY are very focused on keeping price at reasonable levels, while still offering the best image quality. One can see this with the NEX6 that doesn’t even include a battery charger!
But you have a point that mirrorless are good travel cameras and gps fits with this market. If they could make it work through the hotshoe peripheral interface it would be great!
Steve
5 months ago |Absolutely correct. There is a whole market of people who ditched stand-alone handheld cameras for smart phones soon as the image quality became “good enough” for holiday snaps. Sony, Cannon etc have effectively lost this market to the likes of Apple, Samsung etc. You aren’t going to win these people back unless you can give them all the features their smartphones provide (and GPS *IS* a killer feature) along with better image quality.
Mike
3 months ago |You won’t win those people back because the reason they have switched is due to the portability of those cameras. They’re literally taking up no space because they’re on a device that they would be carrying around with them regardless.

I can’t believe we are so complacent with Sony. I guess the Nex 7 is a great camera but we all complain about this and that. We are right. The camera is not perfect and the production of (quality) lens is slow and often disappointing, not to mention the firmware updating which should be every semester not every two years…

Yeah, it sounds radical, but I cannot believe that we are all for adopting the new model which will probably be as or more expensive than the actual camera and do not realize how much money we have already paid for the NEX 7. 5 months ago |Been using my RX1 and the NEX7 (with 24mm Zeiss) alot recently. Have to say the NEX7 wins out everytime for me right now.
The RX1 is nice, but AF is dreadfully unrelyable in low light, and the camera on a whole is slower than I’d like.
Dionysus
5 months ago |I agree, the NEX7 with the 24mm Zeiss is a more user friendly camera than the RX1. AT ISO 800 the RX1 is no better than the NEX7 and at higher ISO the RX1 shows more potential if the camera auto focus was more accurate. However if (and this is a big if) the RX1 is set at ISO 400 @ f2.8 and has accurate focus it does render a magical image. I will post a photo story later today called Santa Cruz showing RX1 images to compare with NEX7/Zeiss 24 photos in most of the Stories called Age Specific.
sean lancaster
5 months ago |I think you’re largely correct. My NEX 5N and Zeiss 24/1.8 can acquire focus a little faster than my RX1. But when the RX1 does get the focus right, the image quality can often be magical.
I sure hope the NEX 7M has better AF capabilities. That’s the only way I’d be intrigued by it.
Taylor
5 months ago |Really? I was under the impression that the RX100 at ISO800 was vastly superior to the NEX-7 at ISO800. The NEX-7 at ISO800 is good if you must use it, but too grainy for “nice” pictures (eg anything you want to blow up).
Sean Lancaster
5 months ago |You’re talking about the RX100 and comparing it to the NEX 7 . . . I am sure in decent light this is a comparison that can be made, but in lower light the NEX 7 sensor size is just too much better than the RX100. The RX1, on the other hand, is a full sized sensor and it can easily beat the NEX 7 and completely destroy the RX100 in lower light.

5 months ago |On a second thought, could it be NEX-7 Merril, with real high IQ and no AA filter?
That would also be enticing!
Hendrick
5 months ago |It would not because foveon sensor has terrible IQ beyond ISO 400. That alone would put a lot of people off of the product, especially since Sigma already charges $1k for essentially a kit camera and lens.

5 months ago |Aside the fun-writers here…
Although I really don’t like Sony’s behaviour of treating updates/upgrades of existing products, I’d welcome a NEX7 successor, and I’d upgrade from my NEX7 for several technical reasons.
For sure it will have the new hotshoe, and certainly sure WiFi.
More important for me would be improvment on the AF accuracy and AF realiability in low light/contrast situations. Number two would be improvement on the corner issue due to flange-sensor distance (think a few mm would help here).
Nice to have would be improvement on the integrated flash – with regards to usability (WL trigger and with lenses longer than the Zeiss…) and mechanical construction.
Poki
5 months ago |You can’t change the flange focal distance, no E-Mount lens would work then. But you can change the microlens layout to prevent the corner issues.

“Also, as Sigma undoubtedly knows, within the next 18 months one of the major sensor and camera makers is going to release an advanced multi-layer sensor which bypasses the Foveon patents (…)”
So, is Sony really working and going to release a Foveon-like sensor?
WOOT!
Joel Richards
5 months ago |. . . or Canon. But my hope/money is on Sony especially with all the patents they’ve teased us with in the past several years. Now if this was a three-layer, FULL-FRAME sensor it would be a true game changer since that would also mean a fast enough readout to handle video (or a return to SLR which I doubt Sony would do). That might also explain the confusion about how many MP the mirrorless prototype really has.

If you read LL’s post, he says that the sensor is due around the next 18 months. In other words, around 2014. That’d very well be within the “three years period” which the post you linked mentioned.
So…. yeah, it seems Sony is indeed working on something big this time.

-better battery life (even if it’s already good)
-nex6 like dial for changing mode between PASM
-better image quality in low light
-small raw mode (like on some canon camera)
-better focus speed with the sel50f1.8
-touch screen (for focusing)
-another card slot

- GPS (Really is a required feature in the entire NEX range)
- Wifi (nice to have but not needed for myself, but for instant upload and easy transfer/backup it would be a great option)

5 months ago |My biggest issues with the NEX7 are the low light autofocus and the difficulty with not having an easily accessable movable spot focus mode. If they fix these things I will be in heaven. I plan on adding the new Zeiss glass. 5 months ago |Greetings,
I don’t really need stuff like GPS or WiFi (but I would welcome it if it arrive, I could image better use of WiFi). I think that origin of poor low light performance (NOISE!!!) is due to not mature construction of sensor with high pixels’ count. If we get higher sensor we will probably get even worse matrix performance or we would be resulted with camera priced near Nikon D800.
I believe that improved 24 megapixel matrix, with iso value 50 and shutter speed of 1/8000, could be really strong encouragement to buy Nex-7m (at least for me). But the really power of newest models is burried in PlayMemories Camera Apps. Nowadays PlayMemories camera apps are really silly but even today, remote control (via WiFi) is already really nice feature and step forward to IR remote control, with which You need to preserve optical path to front of Your camera to release shutter. It has a great potential IMHO. I use only manual Carl Zeiss lenses so any improvemnt of AF speed is not an advantage to me
Best regards, WZ.

5 months ago |Simply put a NEX-6 sensor in a NEX-7 body
Add GPS, Wifi, touchscreen
Faster and more accurate focusing
and I’ll also be tempted to upgrade from NEX-5R
Same for A77, put the same sensor in it with the same enhancements
and I’ll get one to compliment my A900
Bayer type sensor seems to have reached its highest resolution (16-24MP for APS-C, 24-36MP for FF), I think the next wave will be multi-layer sensors like Foveon.
Even if the 1st gen sensor didn’t do well under low light, as long as it can produce accurate colors with excellent resolution, I’ll get one for studio and landscape shooting!

5 months ago |I beg the people of Sony to PLEASE not do that app junk they did on the NEX-6 and NEX-5R on the next NEX-7 (or FF NEX). There is no reason a +$1,000 camera needs to download features (at $10 a pop) that are and should be standard.
No joke, I will not buy a Sony camera, or any camera for that matter, that requires me to download standard features…

4 months ago |A replacement for the NEX 7…Hmmmm… The thing about the NEX system is that it is compact, so a full-frame sensor would be missing the point. That’s for the other Sony systems.
Being compact means that it makes an ideal travel camera, and by “Travel” I simply mean something I can carry around. For me this also means equipment that is both lightweight and inconspicuous. One cannot underestimate the effect that a big DSLR, with a matching fast “pro” zoom, has on any subject. The spontaneity is completely lost.
To match this, I would wish for a quiet shutter sound, or at least one that’s as quiet as possible. I really don’t need a 1/8000th sec shutter speed. The uses of this would be limited, at best, but a quiet shutter to complete an inconspicuous camera? Priceless, for lots of occasions, including my theatre work, as well as street stuff.
To go with this low-profile requirement would also be the wish to have good low-light performance. Using flash should be for family snaps or studio work: that sort of thing, so an improved sensor would be as essential as a soft shutter sound. It would also help with smaller aperture lenses that have a smaller visual/weight footprint, as well as the lack of antishake: another victim of the NEX quest for portability.
To complete my snap-shot camera requirements, I’d ask for solid, decently-fast AF. After-all, the system lenses don’t have DOF scales on them, so pre-focusing is more difficult.
Next would be an end to the Micky Mouse NEX menu interface. People want to be able to choose the customisation they want easily, and having done that, be able to access their preferences quickly.
I could go on, but these would be my main requirements. More left-field wishes would be a side-mounted rear screen that would be genuinely multi-angle, or, alternatively, a connector for another EVF (already available in the NEX system) on the side of the camera, below the built-in EVF, to facilitate portrait shooting. This would keep my nose clear of the rear screen, and keep my shutter hand beneath the camera, supporting the whole set-up, and stopping me from looking like a crane for the sake of holding the camera the other way up.
Some nice lenses would also improve any camera.
Just some thoughts.

Over a million people bought this camera in 2012! Most of the problems are firmware problems. What has done Sony about them? Probably pick them up and incorporate these features to another camera…so we continue buying Sony until it gets it right. This is NOT FAIR. Serious camera makers do not change their models every two years. They release them right to begin with.
