(SR4) A850 and A900 Firmware update release postponed (again)
Few days ago one of our trusted sources told us that Sony almost finshed the new firmware for the Sony A850 and the Sony A900
. He expected the official release for late March. The same source contacted me again and told me that the release has again be delayed. He didn’t gave me any reasons for the delay.
Also a second trusted source could confirm this rumor so I guess there is no way out form that bad news
Reminder (SR = Sonyrumor):
SR1=fake rumor (1% chance the rumor will become real)
SR2=rumor from unknown and unreliable source (10-20% chance the rumor will become real)
SR3=a rumor unknown source or sources which sounds realistic (20-50% chance the rumor will become real)
SR4=rumor from our trusted sources (50-70% chance the rumor will become real)
SR5=rumor from many of external and internal sources (70-90% chance the rumor will become real)

March 10, 2010 |Good news are that the updates are postponed, not canceled.

March 10, 2010 |maybe these ‘trusted sources’ are not that trustworthy…. very few rumors that have been posted here have become real lately

March 10, 2010 |Sony haven’t exactly gone and done the opposite to the rumours on here though have they? Nothing at all – let alone anything proven untrue on here – has come from Sony in a long time; you can’t really judge unless you’re in the loop yourself.
So long as they are not proven utterly false I will stick it out to the summer for updates to either the 7xx or 9xx line (in bodies or firmware). I would have bought the a700 had they continued to make it. Shame Sony are about to lose one more customer they could quite easily be holding on to.
Surely it’s about time they did something to stop the (ever increasing) amount of people waving goodbye in favour of Canikon. Postponement is part of the contemporary electronics business. It seems to me, however that EXCESSIVE postponement is part of living with Sony Alpha. They really do have some way to go in this business; nobody will buy your products unless you actually make your products available, let alone making them competitive!

March 10, 2010 |Actually, it seems to me that the rumors Andrea has recently reported have panned out pretty well. It was disappointing that Sony showed no more than mock-ups or prototypes at PMA, but what they showed was right in line with the rumors, and then some. I think they’ll come sooner than we might think.
As to the FW, what’s exciting is that Sony really does seem to be working on FW for the A850/900.
Before very long, we’ll have probably more than one worthy successor to the A700, a much-improved successor to the A3xx cameras, two great new lenses, an entire line of EVIL cameras, and maybe even one or more new FF camera. That’s a far cry from where we were a month or more ago, when people were loudly saying that Sony had no intention of replacing the A700 or releasing FW for the current FF cameras. And, if you pay careful attention, you can see that Sony is ramping up PR & advertising. I’m increasingly thinking it will be a very good year.

March 10, 2010 |I have to disagree with Dulaney – many of the hot rumours on this site have not proven to be true and are mere fabrications. It’s especially evident when dates for specific products are given such as at this link:
http://sonyalpharumors.com/sr5-sony-will-launch-a-new-camera-on-november-18/
November 18, nor any date since, has seen a new camera that sports a 4/3 format. Someone should go through and catalogue the numbers of untrue prognostications (sorry, I won’t attempt it as it’s a busy time of year for me).

March 10, 2010 |I like your optimism dulaney and I agree with what ur saying. a lot of ppl especially on dpreview are complaining like crazy or threatening to jump ship to canikon.
So that’s the bad news about the FW update. What’s the good news? =)

March 10, 2010 |Trusted source said that Sony had almost finished new firmware. And now it is postponed again?
Maybe Sony techs wrote the new firmware to be too good. Sony exec then decided not to release it for free. Instead, they wanted to come out with another new model built with such firmware: A950!!!

March 11, 2010 |I don’t see reason for that. Better featured/upgraded A900/850 will sell better. This camera is not outdated and A900/A850/D3x are the only 24mpix cameras available.

March 26, 2010 |It feels like Sony has turned their backs on the advanced DSLR market, in favor of the entry level DLSR. I am envious of CaNikon owners, and the support they receive from their camera manufactures.

May 5, 2010 |LP, I am not envious of canikon, just annoyed that 3k later for a camera body
a few zeiss lenses and a G 70-200 = thousands of dollars.
Sony doesnt seem to give two cents….
somewhat lob-sided.
I always argue sony products are great, but wtf mate?
