(SR4) Short A77 status update

I just received a short message from one of my anonymous sources: “A77 packshots are ready and currently being reviewed by management!“.
The source is reading us….feel free to ask him whatever you want to know about the A77. Hope he can/will answer your questions!
Things we know about tha A77:
- 24 megapixel sensor
- FullHD
- New advanced OLED(?) EVF
- UNCONFIRMED -> There were rumors (and also a Sony patent) about some kind of hybrid viewfinder ( a là Fuji X100 (Click here to see that camera on Amazon)?).
- ISO will go ‘up into the hundreds of thousands’
- price will be in the same area of the Canon 60D ($900-1200. Click here to check price)
- The A77 has a bigger and robust body compared to current SLT cameras.
- The A77 will not have a flip-up mode to allow shooting without this extra sheet of glass in place.
- It will take CF+SD
+MS
cards, of which you can use two at the same time.
- With the new battery you can take around 1.000 pictures.
P.S.: Paul Genge of Sony UK said that “this camera will include such high specification features that current A700 owners will be amazed”
P.P.S.: We have a new facebook page! Join us at http://www.facebook.com/sonyalpharumors!

Adi
A packshot (also pack shot) is a still or moving image of a product, usually including its packaging and labeling, used to portray the product’s reputation in advertising or other media. It is an important stimulus to sales, with the goal of triggering in-store, on-shelf product recognition.[1][2] The term packshot also refers to product placement in a movie or television show.[3] Pack shots often dominate television commercials, taking from two to five seconds of a thirty-second commercial.[4] Forged or leaked packshots for unreleased products have led to controversy or increased interest in the product.[5][6] Packshots can be a simple photograph of the product on a white background or can entail the use of elaborate props. Products sold as digital downloads, such as software, sometimes have digitally generated packshots when no physical product or packaging exists.[citation needed]

2 years ago |1) I have heard a few months ago of a rumor here, that there will come (50%) a SLT AND a SLR of the 7 series! Will there now be definitely only one A77? Or can someone hope for a A7xx!?!? I’m still not so impressed of this SLT-technology.
2) What’s about AF-points? Are there any details about total number and number of cross-type AF-points?

Beside the admin listed features are nice, We needs further:
1. 0.1s AF + AF tracking in video;
2. No filming over heated problem!!!
3. 1080 60p, 1080 24p, film like effect
I will ensure my $$ go to sony if these are done

* number of cross-type AF points
* coverage of the frame of AF points
* additional sensitivity for fast (F2.8) lenses
And will there also be a full-frame variant? (seems simple, just replace the sensor, enlarge the translucent mirror, and enlarge the AF module).

2 years ago |I sold my a100, a300 and a700 after i knowing this ultra machine a77/a750 will come soon. This is because i believe sony will make big improvements and change the way photographers think about technology + photography. I bought the a100 for some times then upgrade to the a300 and the a700 and i stop there. But im not ready to migrate to FF so i decided to wait for the a77/a750. If sony dont imrove as they promise, i’ll surely jump to CaNikon thats for sure! 5 out of 10 my alpha friend had jump to CaNikon because of the ISO issue, jpeg very soft etc bla bla. Sony please dont let us hopeless. Give us some sign. Please. I beg u Sony!

2 years ago |I’m one of the many who just got tired of hearing all the rumors about an A700 replacement and never seeing anything become of it. I sold my Sony gear last fall and made the jump to Nikon. I’ve been very happy with my choice. We saw the mockup of the A700 replacement over a year ago and it’s still not out. Meanwhile Sony is releasing a new low end camera every couple of months it seems. Too frustrating.
The other reason I jumped was that I’m not a fan of the SLT technology. I had a loaner A55 for a week. It was a solid, well built camera that took decent shots. You could see the light loss due to the SLT optics, but it wasn’t too bad. What I hated with a passion was the EVF. The colors were off and looking through it while panning made me sick. Hearing the A77 (or A750 or whatever) was going that direction was the final straw.

2 years ago |Reminds me to a joke we told us as children: Two prisoners want to escape the prison. They had to climb over 100 walls. After the 99th, they decided to return…
Sony always communicated that the a700 successor will be something very special, that the a77 will change the rules of the game, that they prefer to delay the release over presenting something mediocre. And yes, the a33/a55 is meant for “running around and taking photos of kids playing in the garden” and not the a77….
If you judge the (unreleased) a77 by looking at the a33/a55 it’s your fault…
pancanikonpus
2 years ago |haha… i judge not because look at the A33/55. I put trust to the 2 seniors menagement persons from Sony included the CEO. Sony claimed it is worth to wait. If this is not true, it will slash on their reputation
no body will bother their comment anymore
If this rumor is true, then the selling price $ will be the killer with at least or better of A580 iso performance.
TomDJ
2 years ago |Don’t care about the amount of pixels, there are more then I can count anyway.

2 years ago |Well put Tom, just spinning our wheels if Sony hasn’t put some time and energy into their AF system. Sky_walker
2 years ago |I guess I have a questions to the rumor author
1) Can you confirm/deny the rumor about hybrid EVF
2) Do you know about any plans regarding dual-release of A77 with OVF camera? Or more general: Do you know anything about coming OVF cameras?
BodaFotoBarcelona
2 years ago |I have only one question for the source…when?!?!
BFB
ser
2 years ago |is this a camera with three sensors (R-G-B)?
Nico
2 years ago |I’m really not that enthused about this. Look at the DxO tests of the A55 vs the A580 and you can roughly see a 28% drop in Low Light Iso, which means if they’d give us a proper camera we wouldn’t need iso in the hundreds of thousands.
Hope they remove their heads and give us a camera soon, not a toy.
Dulaney Ward
2 years ago |A better way to think of it is that the A580 has half a stop advantage over the A55 in low-light ISO. ISO uses a logarhythmic scale, so percentages are meanlingless.
Half a stop is not as dramatic, and the overall sensor sensitivity drop is less than that. But these disadvantages are still significant, so I hope that Sony has narrowed the gap a good deal before releasing the camera.
But this rumor means that, for the first time, we have a rumor with concrete evidence that supports an early release. Gustav has been saying in the last couple of weeks at Dyxum that he believes the A77 will be released with the 500 f4 “around April.” I think that may just be the case! (Gustav is NOT saying that he has this from Sony.)
Mr M
2 years ago |My question would be. Has Sony resolved the following issues on SLT
1) EVF Tearing while panning
2) Shutter lag in EVF
3) half second flash lag while using flash
If answer is all yes , then we have a winner SLT =)

GF1
2 years ago |It’s not a threat you are the child here
I and most people want a camera for their summer vacation, A700 is not cutting it for me anymore, i have to get a new camera before the summer so if Sony didn’t release A77 or NEX7 before the summer I’LL have to move to another system, it’s not a threat it’s called reality.

2 years ago |Wow, all this for a summer vacation? Please. If you were a pro and you needed to keep up with industry then yeah go ahead and be mad at Sony. But if your a700 “isn’t cutting it” for summer vacations then you may need to take some photography lessons. I still see people take awesome pictures with 1st gen dslr’s. You’re impatience is not Sony’s fault. “someone” is right – it is childish to jump ship so quickly.

Please tell me how can i shoot video with A700? because i want that feature just like many others
I wont list the many reasons why i want upgraded camera so i will leave it at that, some people here would get punched in the face in real life for their bad manners so learn to behave idiots

2 years ago |I am planing to upgrade to DSLR from a year, hard time to make a choice between Canon & Nikon as I personally think these both are leaders, now sony jump in. While using my Nikon point and shoot e5100 and sony H50, I really like EVF as you are looking into what you are going to capture instead of OVF as tried one of my friends which is just like watching with my eyes and same through lens. Captured images never and could never match our vision. But I don’t think in image quality Sony could deliver quality like Canon or Nikon. As my 6-7 yrs old Nikon e5100 5.1mp p&s beats my sony H50 9.1mp.
Sony Is very poor in support, Sony Ericsson is worst in support, http://sesync.uservoice.com/forums/68993-general where Sony word comes mean……
Sky_walker
2 years ago |Hm… well, the OVF vs EVF discussion depends very much on what you got used to. If you’d own a (D)SLR with big pentaprism viewfinder you wouldn’t really want to go into EVF anymore.
As for matching the Canon/Nikon image quality – check tests of A55 and A580 – Sony already outrun most of Canon DSLRs and is half-step behind Nikon in matter of noise/dynamic range, though half step in front of it in matter of colors.
Support, well… I don’t know where you live but out here in Europe the Nikon have worse support of all companies, than there’s Sony and Canon equal, and Olympus having the best service of all.
Daniel
2 years ago |It’s just like Myke said…over an year!!! Sky_diver and many more asked when!? Who should one ask, I’ve said it before, this is just talk, yet nothing for sure…no release date, no comment from Sony about the specs we are all discussing about…
I’m happy with my a850&lenses. I also have a backup second camera but I simply need a very good APS-C.
It seems to me that Sony has made a difficult turn…they are fighting to catch up, but gettin’ the SLTs to their maximum capabilities is not easy and obvious, time consuming.
I would prefer OVF anytime over EVF, but it seems to be already decided for the a700′s succesor. I hope at least it will be good enough, much better than the one used for the a55. That one doesn’t feel natural to me at all.
I would love to take the a850 from my eye, look through the EVF of the a77 and not get a strange feeling..but we all have to wait and see…

2 years ago |I would also like to know something about a release date. I am a wildlife photographer and use the a700. Was hopeing to get the a77 before now as I am going to Yellowstone for 8 days to shoot Lamar Valley. (Will use the a700 instead) I plan to go back in June and spend 30 – 45 days in Yellowstone, Jackson Hole and Glacier. The addition of an a77 would prove to be outstanding. So at least, can we expect something by May? That is within the first 1/2 of 2011. What I can say is I hope Gustav is correct!!

2 years ago |good luck with “this extra sheet of glass in place.”
Adi
2 years ago |I don’t think anybody will leak the release date. This is usualy more a marketing decision and can change fast depending of external factors (competition…). If Sony prepares the marketing material , like brochure, videos and so on the camera is ready and passed the beta testing, but maynot be in production yet. Usualy a tech product is finished and tested (except some firmware tweaking) months before it gets into production. But I hope more tech specs to get out as the release of the camera aproaches.
Thomas
2 years ago |Very nice! If the price compared to the 60D, it’s way below my budget (1500 £ including lens). Maybe I could buy some new glass with the rest of the budget…
Anyway, things are starting to look good. It would be nice to have it by the summer months, although i seriously doubt that they would be able to get it out by then. Also, I’ve heard that a lot of other cameras are comming as well, but from other brands, though
Dulaney Ward
2 years ago |I am beginning to feel that we can count on a date “around April” for the announcement of the A77. Sony seldom if ever announces that they will announce a camera at a specific time, but they send out hints of various sorts. Last fall we had rumors that the A77 was being tested in the field at that time, and that the tests would take no longer than the rest of the year. If no problems were found, the cameras could have been ready then. Here, in late January, we are hearing from a good source that promotional pictures have already been taken of the new camera in what would have to be its final form, perhaps together with packaging. That has to mean that the announcement is imminent. Furthermore, more details are coming out, and, to begin the year, there were two major interviews by Sony officials, clearly orchestrated and, I believe, intended to sound the firat riffs leading up to an announcement.
My question is, what will Sony announce at CP+, CIPA’s big photography show in Japan in February? Will they do no more than build the expectation still higher? or will they take the opportunity to announce something big?
Btw, Sony has tended in recent years to bring newly announced cameras to the market within a month of announcement. Last year, they suffered from not having enough capacity to meet the demand, but they have taken numerous steps to ramp up capacity, and have said that they will have doubled their sensor-fabrication capacity by this spring.

2 years ago |ISO in “Hundreds of thousands”!? This A77 may be Sony’s top-secret sensor showcase – if true, you’ll NEED EVF just to see what you’re shooting at in nearly black-out situations.
Adi
2 years ago |This is the first year when the other dedicated photo show was moved to fall. CP+ may de facto take it’s place for some major anouncements. I think every major photo manufacturer has something prepared for, but it’s waiting to see what will the other do. From other rumors looks like Nikon and maybe Canon are prepared to anounce something (big?).If tham’s the case there is a good chance that Sony may do the same. But if this is the case, they may not have the product ready for shipping in one month, but maybe in 3…
Dulaney Ward
2 years ago |You may be right on all counts, but I expect it will ship by April or May.
Adi
2 years ago |Well, my old F828 had a night-vision mode which you could use to frame your photo (which could be taken with a flash) in complete darkness…The EVF on that camera, unfortunatelly is a few generation behind the one in A55.That camera had also a laser based autofocus system for low light situations (pretty good in fact).

I don’t hink that the D400 will come before the A77, though I may be wrong.
It is anticipated by many that Nikon will introduce three new cameras this year: a mirrorless system; the D400; and a D3s replacement. The mirrorless system is currently expected this spring, and another big announcement in August (the D400?).
Indications are that the A77 will be introduced this spring.

2 years ago |All of this is real intersting but I wonder how serious is Sony about their DSLR’s. I ask this because the a55 is very hard to find. The 3 Sony Style stores I have been in said they do not have any and do not know when they will get the a55.
Also, all the big photo stores, B&H Photo, JR, etc, do not have the a55.
Sony needs to convince me that they are serious about the high end photo market by going public about all the shortages on the a55, as well as telling all their stores and posting it on sony.com what is happening wtih the short supply.

2 years ago |See the link to Nikon Rumors that is saying if history repeats itself the Nikon D300s replacement may not be too far off. Now if this replacement has a Sony manufactured sensor higher than 16.2mp then I doubt it will be released before a Sony camera with the equivalent sensor? The debate at NR is what model Nikon will release in April so if a 24mp D400 is set to be released sometime in April you have to think Sony will release the A7xx shortly before?
