(SR5) Coming soon: 16-50mm f/3,5-5,6 OSS G zoom E-mount lens!

Top sources told us that it is the High Quality G zoom lens that is coming along the new NEX-F5. It has a focal length of 16-50mm, an aperture of f/3,5-5,6 and comes with OSS (Image stabilization). I have no info about the possible price yet. I also don’t know if there will be a second lens too.
Anyway, this will be definitely a better lens on my NEX-7 than the current 18-55mm kit lens. Let’s cross the fingers that the price isn’t much higher! Oh, almost forgot it…I want it in Black too!

Reminder (SR = Sonyrumor):

SR5=almost certainly correct!

12 months ago |To be honest I was expecting a constant F/2,8 with focal length of 16-50.
Maybe it’s only me, but I “Always-mounted-lens” (sorry, don’t know if this is the correct english expression) should be fast.
Right now, it looks like sony is concentrating on a lens that can match the high pixel count of the nex7.

I want a real zoom lens.

Carl
12 months ago |Your label says -6.3 where it should say -5.6.
Still, that lens is way too long for a 3.5-5.6 standard zoom. Maybe it was originally going to be faster, but they slowed it down to make it less long? Or maybe it’s real, and Sony just have no clue.
Carl
12 months ago |Five point six, huh? Well, I guess that would have a place if it was compact enough, but I’d wager that it’ll be bigger than the Panasonic 12-35/2.8.
Keith
12 months ago |Unless this is a more compact lens than the kit, I don’t really see the point and will be really disappointed. But considering they already nearly duplicated one lens this year, maybe that’s really what they think we mean by more lenses, new versions of the lenses we already have :-/

12 months ago |A high quality G lens with no constant aperture !!?????!!!
f 3.5 – 5.6
Should we laugh ?????
Sony is going mad !!!
They don’t believe in the nex 7 or what ????
Lofote
12 months ago |Neither the 70-300 nor the 70-400 G lenses for the Alpha mount have a constant aperture, yet alone F2.8 at ANY focal length. “G” means special coating and high quality glass used, nothing more. Where did you get the impression, G means constant aperture?

12 months ago |Kinda disappointed it’s not a ‘constant aperture’ zoom, but I won’t judge it until we know more things like price and performance.

12 months ago |@Admin: And there is no information about new firmware updates to improve existing Alpha SLT models like A65/A77? Where is the rumored FW update for NEX7 and A900, which was rumord to be available in few days ?
Any FF information on upcoming A99 ?
Teasers, pics, infos about AF module?
I am a bit disappointed.

12 months ago |@_@ at least it should be a constant f3.5 if it cant be a f2.8. Sigh.
Tommy
12 months ago |Oh no!!I need a constant f/2.8
David Charlwood
12 months ago |Well, Sony are successfully attempting to drive all serious users away from their cameras. Panasonic & Olympus must be delighted that the Micro 3/3rds smaller sensor size seems to be being vindicated.

12 months ago |Yuppee! This is very EXCITING news! Combine this with the pop up flash and the 180 flip screen and the wifi.. wow! The possibilities are ENDLESS!
THANK YOU, SONY IMAGING DIVISION!!

12 months ago |f2.8 will be as big as Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 DT SSM, hope the image quality is superb and the lens remain compact in size.
Denis
11 months ago |Not as big for sure: short flange distance makes it much easier to design WA.
Nex7-cph
12 months ago |that sounds like a very bad joke! I’d rather get some decent fixed focal lenses instead of a 3.5-5.6
N.R.
12 months ago |Somehow I think the rumor could contain a mistake. How will they explain to anybody that the G model of a f3.5-5.6 lens is better than the kit lens? Extra two milimeters in the wide end? Most consumers look at numbers.
Lofote
12 months ago |In the lens market, high-end consumers do look at quality, not just the numbers. And a G lens was never built or intended for standard consumers.
Peter
12 months ago |What a downer. In a line up that is lacking lenses, they come up with a lens that is not attractive to buy so its like giving us a biscuit while we await dinner.
Suckers. Only two lenses worth buying are 24 and 50. I got voigtlander for everything else I need.
How can they not see that the real news grabbers are Panny and Oly with their fast lenses? they fast zooms? f*ӣng stupid
Ray oody
12 months ago |18-55 sucks and we know it . So this will be a high performance lens against the 18-55.. But what about a constant aperture ?? Or a faster one .. For god’s sake it’s a G lens !!!.

DenGoe
12 months ago |Comon, your sources must be joking. Sony can’t be releasing a better-quality copy of the existing lens. An improved version of the kit lens should be a mandantory update of the lens, not a “new” lens with a premium price tag.
So apparently, what we’ll get this year are
1) A Sony-branded black Tamron 18-200, a downgrade compared to the existing lens.
2) A G-labelled version of the kit lens.
3) ? Some prime ?
I’m crossing my fingers the third lens will be something usefull, like a 35f1.8 (preferably f1.4, but what am I dreaming of at night?). But given the current selection with small apertures, I wouldn’t be surprised if the third lens turns out to be a 35f2.8 or anything else with relatively small aperture. (So the Sigma will end up being the best choice.)
Again, are they serious about f3.5-5.6??? I’m going nuts. This lens roadmap is just plain crazy.

12 months ago |Finally, an e-mount G lens.
I couldn’t care less about constant aperture or fast lenses. The only thing that matters is QUALITY!!!!!
If the recent a-mount G lenses are anything to go by, then we can expect a hell of a lens.
Aaron
12 months ago |screw the g lenses
wth are the emount pancakes?!!
Anonymous
12 months ago |f3.5-f5.6 is a GOOD thing. It most likely means this lens will be a new optical design and very compact. Perfect for the NEX system. If you want a constant f2.8, get the SAL1650 and the LA-EA2 with your nex OR an SLT. No point having a duplicate of that lens but with an emount if it will be that huge. Hopefully Sony has figured out that huge lenses look ridiculous on NEX bodies and can finally start to really compete with m43.
Andy
12 months ago |Wow be still my beating heart
a f3.5-f5.6 G lens I suppose it has to be that slow because of the OSS, wouldn’t it hae been simpler to have inbody IS, just like Olympus have

Fants
12 months ago |I don’t really care about constant f/2.8 as long as the IQ is great and the thing isn’t huge. We desperately need a zoom (and some primes, for that matter) that can live up to the NEX-7′s sensor.
The big problem…if the very mediocre 18-55 costs $299, how much will this be? I don’t NEED f/2.8 but I’m sure as hell not paying $600 for a lens without it.
Kiril
12 months ago |I suppose this aperture means compact size.
f2.8 lens would be quite big i.e. like 16-50 for Alpha. That size will be problem on NEX
Andey
12 months ago |It will be an epic fail by Sony. (
Only 50 1.8 OSS of their lenses is worth to buy, its sad ((
Jay - SonyAlphaLab
12 months ago |Awesome news!! F/2.8 would probably make the lens to big and heavy for a lot of people, so they compromised assume those folks would go for the Fast Prime lenses instead.
I’m really coming from a Nex-7 owner!!

11 months ago |Exactly….I guess people were wanting a 2.8 pancake zoom? It was said long ago this would be a pancake zoom. Why would people be surprised that its 3.5-5.6????
I don’t understand why all the bickering.
Sony needed to bring a high quality zoom for the nex7. This is it.
If you don’t like it. Don’t buy it.

11 months ago |Gotta love the way there must be as many NEX body versions as there are lenses. Sorry now I did’nt go for Olympus or Panasonic. Samsung have some nice small glass for their NX cameras and they cover APS-C sensor, priced ok too. What I would really like is a Sony, fast, wide, small normal/wide lens. Leica Summicron M lenses cover 35mm size are f2 and tiny. Is it really the autofocus motors and bits, etc that makes them grow so much in size? Can they not look back in the old Minolta catalog and look at the CL lenses for some hints and inspiration.
