(SR5) Continually updated: Hot! This is the Sony NEX-C3 (and new external flash)!
FInally we found the first pictures of the new NEX-C3!!! It has exactly the same Sony A55 sensor with 16.2MP and HD video. There is als a new external flash! I like the new design and you? it’s a bit more professional than the NEX-3 layout (P.S.: See the NEX-3 at Amazon, B&H, Adorama, J&R, eBay).
That camera was supposed to be announced on April 4th along the new Sony A35 (which has been delayed too). But due the recent earthquake-tsunami-nuclear disaster it has been delayed. We don’t know yet when Sony will announce both cameras. But we know Sony already planed a new press release in May so maybe….let’s cross the finger!

3 years ago |I am not so exciting about this news. It is replacement, not improvement. I hope they concentrate more on the NEX-7 and the lenses. They sold the NEX-3/5 good only because buyers anticipate great followups (it is meant to be a great system judging from the roadmap). It is on the best interest of the costumers and the manufacturers to bring out the worthy and timely updates.

3 years ago |New design is way better. Altough I am scared that there are few buttons. We have to hope ergonomics is not suffering because of this. How big is the LCD display Andrea? Any detail about it? With a proper pancake prime in front of it I could think about it quite seriously..

Good to see they included an IR-port. The buttons look like they might be a bit more intuitive like more separation for the movie button and better tactile feedback for the two softkeys.

3 years ago |Did we ever get the specs on the video functions of this camera? I’ve been holding out on the NEX 5 because I would like to have a 60 FPS option, and there were rumors of a 120fps on the NEX 7. But if the C3 has some good specs It might be a middle ground I could settle for.
If anyone has specs please link them.

3 years ago |I don’t think it is possible on a NEX-7 body yet. It is because Sony never produce a consumer product which can out performance the Professional DV line.
It is just announced that a 18.2MP in 16:9 format is produced in this specification. I think Sony is not too hurry to show the muscle and reserve it for the further future product after 2 years, I guess.

What I REALLY need are AF lenses. They don’t have to be the highest end. How about something in the middle? Primes, too.

3 years ago |Can’t do this camera without a full articulating screen. 99% of my work is vertical. A fully articulated screen allows vertical waist level viewfinder. Not possible here. Too bad for me and Sony that I must get something else.

3 years ago |I really like the design but the only thing I think is wrong is it has the Alpha logo but it doesn’t have an Alpha Mount nor it supports the flash units for with the Alpha hot shoe.

3 years ago |Is there any news about a NEX 5 replacement? Because if the NEX-C3 is crippled like the NEX 3 (no IR sensor, no 1080p video) and the NEX 7 is too expensive (for me at least) and possibly with a bigger body compared to the NEX3/5 then I think a successor for the NEX 5 to be positioned between these two (extremes) is a must. It will be very interesting to see what improvements the NEX-3C brings in terms of AF speed, sound recording quality (the autogain problem and the loud noise recording – like at concerts), shutter sound and small other things that I consider problematic on the NEX3/5. So I hope there will be a NEX5 replacement or at least a big rebate on the NEX5 after the launch of NEX-3C and NEX7

3 years ago |It’s interesting that Sony keeps trying for the silver top on the black body. TBH, it looked silly on the A550 (which was otherwise an excellent camera), and I don’t think it looks much better here. I think I actually prefer the original NEX-3′s boxier (and one color) design.

3 years ago |If designed properly a camera doesn’t need a ton of buttons. Take a look at the Leica M9; there’s hardly anything on the body at all. Of course that camera uses lenses with aperture dials. As far as street and travel photography goes all a person should need is a WB button, a shutter release button, and a dial for aperture priority mode. Sports and studio cameras obviously require more external controls; but the C3 hardly looks like it was designed for those purposes. I’m guessing the NEX-7 will have more DSLR-like external controls.

I need analog controls like a metering switch, dedicated AEL button, etc.
Also, the Leica just looks clean, but it does have quite a lot of stuff going on:
- 2 dials (back and shutter dial on top)
- drive switch
- 6 buttons on the back
- four-way controller (which is in fact four buttons)
- and I am not counting the image field selector
That’s like 13 controls. Compared to 16 on the A55 as an example (where two of those are movie and AF).
Not to mention that, as you said, it uses aperture rings and doesn’t have AF, so that’s a lot of buttons is doing without.
