(SR5) Last week leaks of the A77 are REAL images!

It took some time to get a multiple confirmation from my trusted sources but finally I can tell you that the A77 leaked images are deifnitely REAL! I first made a bit of confusion because of a miscomunication with my sources. So take a deep look at the images because this is it! The new A77!!!
Once again thanks Pyoshin (dyxum forum) for posting this!

2 years ago |I am going to put a deposit on one as soon as it’s anounced. I love my A700 and had the opportunity to play with an A55. If they can combine the best of the 2 camera’s in the A77 I think it will dominate!
Rick
2 years ago |Here is a link to a size comparison! They took three images of the camera’s and used the lens mount’s to size the images. It looks as though the A77′s overall size will fit between the A700 and A55. I also held a peice of paper up to my monitor and marked from the top of the shutter button to the bottom of the grip and found the A77 and A700 have the same size hand grip and the A55 is substantially smaller.

2 years ago |If this is indeed the real SOny A77, why does the tiltable LCD display have two sets of hinges.
You can see it at the left & right of the LCD screen as well as the bottom hinge.
It should have only one set of hinges. Not both at the same time.

+100, i am amazed by that too, because of one button that sound like BIG F*****NG deal to them.
but then, physical button like metering, AF mode, SSS switch is really useful if they can retain it. perhaps throw in Fn1 and Fn2 customizable, and a switch that turns EVF/LV. i dislike the auto EVF to LCD LV… i wan the old LCD layout (OVF mode LCD layout in A550/580/850/900). even better if Sony open the firmware for customization!

2 years ago |@ Carl 77mm filter diameter affords more efficient correction, especially at the wider angle. Most ultra-wide DT type lenses are 77mm… I know good filters are expensive but they are very much worth while.
Also, considering the upgrade path, buying good 77mm filters now means you won’t have to later.

2 years ago |Photonut, the shot to shot times of SLT are far faster than most DSLR available today (after demonstrating a Rebel T3i against the A55V daily for the past two months, this fact is irrefutable) and Sony will have taken care of the flash delay for their prosumer body, I’ve no doubt.

2 years ago |It’s really amusing how many have xray vision or esp to tell them all the features and specs of a camera from a picture. They know it will be such a advanced, perfect, good camera How? Folks know nothing about this camera, especially how it will function for the advanced user it’s supposed to be for. There is no doubt that like any modern camera it will take consumer camera photos but that does not qualify it in more advanced photography and is only a very low level qualification at this point.

The Six buttons plus the top-LCD panel compared to the 4 physical buttons on top of the A700 should make everyone happy.
Since there are no “leaked” photos of these pre-production A77′s, we’ll have to go off the transparent model leaked shown several months back: http://www.photographyblog.com/images/uploads_news/sony_a700_replacement_09_thumb.jpg

2 years ago |@Doug, your post is the best, it makes me want this camera even more.
Having zoom to 100% quickly with one press after taking the picture, gives the A700 an edge compared to canikon where I always struggle to get to the right zoom level with one press of a button.
Can I add some dreams:
- return of the minolta intervalometer in the body to do timelapse recordings, maybe even with onboard video encoding to one of the video standards as well.
- micro AF tuning/adjustment
- digital crop like the A35, just as a feature, it wouldn’t hurt, but gives you extra speed and more telerange but with a lower MP count (would 12 Mp be possible?)
- possibility to memorize two focus points and let the camera interpolate between them while recording video. (for focus shifts, without the need of a follow focus) This is already available in the pro-sumer range HDV camera’s for years, so Sony could easily implement this as a software feature.
My birthday is in december, but I rather have it available for testing before Doug’s birthday

2 years ago |Somewhere over the past couple of years waiting I read (maybe here) that the a77 would be close to the same size as the a700. That works for me as I have the a350 and it’s just a little too small for me. The a700 is 690 grams and the dimensions are WHD 141.7×104.8×79.7 while the a350 is 582 grams and 130×98.5×74.7. Hopefully it stays close the a700 in size.

If you take a lot of pictures and/or if catching the shot is important to you and your photography, then having a camera that fits like a glove and has a control layout that becomes second nature to you so you can concentrate on capturing the image in the viewfinder.
Most of the time, I shoot using manual, but often doing the first shot using auto and then very quickly without taking my eye away from the viewfinder I change to manual and then use both the front dial and the rear dial to control the exposure.
So my left hand is controlling one knob and my right hand is controlling exposure and releasing the shutter and never stop looking through the viewfinder to find a button.
Many photographers do this and this is why button layout is important to some.
I’t important and yes, some of us do get touchy about changes to the layout.
SonyA77
2 years ago |How many steps are there involved in changing the ISO on a camera that lacks a dedicated ISO button, WITHOUT removing your eye from the viewfinder? That’s one example of the differences between good ergonomics and poor ergonomics.
The ergonomics on the Mamiya 7 and every model of Leica are absolutely awful!

2 years ago |People get touchy when their comments are dismissed by somebody who hasn’t got the first clue why dedicated buttons and their placement is important on an A7x class body.
Anybody failing to recognise that ergonomics are a fundamentally important part of camera choice is either very naive or very stupid.

2 years ago |Shame then that the SLT’s lag times are still no better than that of conventional DSLRs. In fact with Flash, the SLTs have a much longer lag time than the previous OVF models.
Doug
2 years ago |I actually like the layout.
Here are my thoughts
- I’m hoping the Kit lens is the faster f2.8
- I’m hoping the “Depth of Field Preview” is still on the front.
- I’m hoping the crop button in MF mode is the zoom feature.
- I’m hoping the dial has two custom positions
- I’m, hoping it hovers around the $1000 price point
- I’m hoping I can see a small histrogram in the viewfinder via disp toggle.
- I’m hoping the focus peek mode is available
- I’m liking the AF/MF and Movie button
- I’m liking the zoom in on MF mode
- I’m liking the sweep panoramic
- I’m loving the idea of reviewing image sharpness through the viewfinder. LCD in sun is no fun.
- I’m loving 24MP and high ISO
- I’m loving 10FPS even if viewfinder doesn’t keep up. At 10 FPS it is fire and pray action anyways. One shot will be good and we all know how to pan by now.
- I’m loving the fact the mirror is out of the equation. Sharpness.
- I’m dreaming of focus bracketing and more than three bracketing shots on all bracket modes.
- I’m hoping it is available for my Birthday in November

2 years ago |Since I see no metering mode switch,I’ll bet the metering mode is controlled by touch on the right side of the lcd. Or,…. by the toggle stick, via a constant display on the lcd and/or viewfinder. Remember also, this has a top lcd, while the a700 does not.

2 years ago |I used the 3 inch display as reference to calculate the camera dimensions. I think they are 137mm x 102mm… or 5,4″ x 4″.

Dulaney Ward
2 years ago |These pictures show a camera entirely identical in every way that I can tell to the prototype with a transparent shell. And the latter actually had MORE buttons/switches than the A700. That was widely recognized. I expect that a bunch of them are on top of the camera.
Every attempt to determine size that I have seen made has concluded that the transparent prototype, and this camera, are roughly the same size as the A700. Of course, something may be throwing those attempts off.
I still believe that we will see three A-mount cameras introduced in August: the A77, the A65, and the replacement for the A55.
Pascal Jappy
2 years ago |The camera looks very promising but the rear is an ergonomic nightmare. Sooooo many buttons. It’s hard to imagine the Nex-7 being so simple + having dedicated speed and aperture controls when you see the cluttered rear of the A77. They don’t seem to come from the same company at all.
Any news on the reality of that (would-be fabulous) NEX-7?
And thanks for all the continued info !
The Lotus Eater
2 years ago |SLT might make it possible to shrink camera size, but that doesn’t mean they will always do so. Handling and ergonomics are primary concerns on a camera at the level of the A700/A77, and a smaller size can impact negatively on this.

Cyrus
2 years ago |Correct me if I am wrong…
But I could not imgine this A77 as big as A700:
1. Slt technolongy should make it smaller (at least less height)
2. Huge size of vertcal grip suggest less height camera vs DSLR
the difference in height is reported to the grip to get square shape
3. Previous pictures of a65 and a77 showed (if i am not wrong) similar size of both devices
And i do not think that a65 would be that bigger compared to its predecessor A55

2 years ago |I don’t see how liking or not liking a given camera’s button layout affects whether someone is “amateurish” or not.
I don’t care for the Nikon D3X’s UI. Does that somehow make me a lesser photographer, because I don’t like the controls of such a pro-grade camera?
SonyA77
2 years ago |What are you talking about? Out of 65 comments there had been ONE suggesting a swap to another brand. Don’t exaggerate.
What are you on about with the “amateurish nonsense” comment? What I have read here are valid comments from existing semi-pro and pro body users.
It appears that the low-end users are the ones not concerned about the ergonomics and lack of buttons, which is no surprise as they have never used a semi-pro model. They simply fail to appreciate why people want dedicated buttons in certain positions.
Carl
2 years ago |Sony use six different filter sizes, so I’d hardly call that standardisation. I have about ten alpha mount lenses, and only one has 77mm threads (and I wish that one didn’t, as I don’t have a c-pol that big).
77mm filters aren’t cheap. That’s fine with expensive gear like the full frame Zeiss zooms, but matters with a lens that’s supposedly going to be sold at a three-figure price point for enthusiasts.

2 years ago |I don’t see how it is a waste of money Carl. 77mm filters are standard on most of the good lenses in the Sony lineup.
Making it smaller would be annoying since then you need a step-up ring, can’t use the lens hood etc. It makes sense to get a decent quality 77mm polariser – and that is more economical than having several in different sizes.

I don’t want to be dicking around which button is what whilst I’m getting that important shot. Heck, most photographers would ADAPT (there’s a word you can learn) to the camera rather than dictate the camera towards them.
I’m sure Sony would have thought of those custom programs and probably done them in a menu anyway or on the dial. Simple really.

Brainless solution is to take big images, make changes and than scale them down to 25% of their original size (no issues with finding big enough images of camera – just looks for press packs available on Sony Press Center website), what would be approximately size of the images on this website. Than save in 100% quality and you are sure noone will spot any pixelated areas beyond these from natural process of saving JPG files. Images here are saved with much much lower quality what causes some areas to be very visibly compressed – textures get lost and reds show very large pixel areas – both in them and around.
“buttons being too close together to have real structural integrity” – What? You seen any recent small cameras? I believe not. Keep in mind when doing this that A77 probably is about the A700 size, maybe somewhat smaller but nothing close to A55 (hopefully).

2 years ago |What may be a “niggle” to you are genuine ergonomic concerns to others.
There doesn’t appear to be a custom button for example, something I use with my flash EVERY time I use it.
What Sony should have done is given us every button on the A700 and added some. They have done what they did with the A100 to A200, they dumbed it down.

Perhaps the button with the question mark signifies that it is customisable?

Take a nice and long look at all the lag that will be gone forever when the mirror is history. We are all guessing today, we are just used to it, and good at it.

2 years ago |If they are real (which I believe they are), it still doesnt mean they are of a production model. I find it amazing that people can look at an image like this, throw up their arms about a missing button and then claim they are moving to canon, I’m pretty damn sure the difference in button layout, as well as menus and so on have far more differences to their current camera than the changes between one Sony model to the next. I love my A700 and, to be honest, other than the high ISO performance I don’t have any reason to upgrade really (well, that and my desire for new toys). I am sure that any niggles I have with the changes to the A77 will be minor, I have niggles with my A700, and almost every other piece of electronics I own, who do I write to, I need to tell someone!?

2 years ago |It’s not just the Alpha logo. It’s the smooth textures in the grip and the buttons being too close together to have real structural integrity. To show that kind of FAIL it would have to be saved as a very poor jpeg or it’s photoshop’d.

2 years ago |There are other reasons for the SLT approach besides video. Assuming you want PAF, then with an SLT versus a conventional DSLR mirror you get higher frame rates, reduced mechanical complexity, less noise and the ability for AF to work during the exposure phase.
Of course it may be that, one day this might get superseded by a break through in main sensor AF, but for now, the SLT approach has advantages for still photography as well as video.

2 years ago |While I don’t want to knock the camera until I try it — and I definitely will try it when it comes out — I have a few concerns about the design:
1. I’m worried it’s a little on the small side. It almost seems like you need the (enormous) grip to have enough space to hold on to it.
2. The button layout doesn’t seem intuitive. The buttons are too close together, all the same size, and don’t have much variation in how much they’re recessed. Sony seriously needs to look at Minolta’s ergonomics. The A700 was nearly perfect, IMHO. The A850/A900 is even better.
3. What’s with the question mark button?
4. No SSS switch. Granted, I don’t use it all the time, but when I do it’s nice to not have to go into a menu for it. Half the time I forget to turn it off when my A580 is on a tripod just because it’s not visible on the outside.
5. I could probably live with and get used to all the other concerns, but the fact that it has no metering switch is a much bigger concern to me. I ALWAYS used that switch on the A700 and now on my A850, and I always end up cursing when I need to switch metering on the smaller A580 because it isn’t there.
Other than that, it’s nice to finally see what it’s going to look like. I’m certainly going to miss the chunky look of the A700, but the capabilities of this camera should more than make up for it.
Thanks, Andrea!

2 years ago |Looks to me like they dropped at least three buttons/switches from the A700, that’s a backward step IMO.
Why aren’t there two or three custom buttons? This is meant to be a semi-pro!
…and where the hell is the histogram function???

2 years ago |The way JPG compression works is that it shows most artifacts on shades of red, so it’s quite obvious that alpha logo will be pixelized if only image compression was bit higher (and in this picture it is, what you can clearly see on rear screen gradient).

2 years ago |That’s good news but as one comment says, where is the a77 badge? Shouldn’t that be in even the prelim model/image? If this is real, tell your sources to send a better resolution image so it doesnt look so blatantly photoshopped. But good news regardless. Now where are the real specs?

2 years ago |I hope it’s 77mm… just because it’d make camera bigger and grip more comfortable.
Canon has 77 mm, Nikon has 77 mm, Tamron has 67mm… but Tamron has shorter range so IMO 72mm can be a good guess.

2 years ago |I thought they were real. Looks like a solid pro DSLR. My only concern is how live the EVF will perform. Hopefully it’s got dual processors, and hopefully part of the processors’ job will be to ensure live motion. My biggest nightmare is looking through the viewfinder and having to play “guess what you get” when I click. I’ll have to wait and see. I am still very skeptical about EVF/translucent mirror in general. It’s only real purpose is for use in real-time AF for video, which should not be this camera’s primary concern in the first place.
Other than that, the body looks nice although I would have liked to see a more traditional vintage looking body. This just looks like a Canon 7D to be honest. Nothing very original about the look. I’d still like to see and know the full specs on this thing. If it turns out to be a dud, I’ll just buy a second hand A850 as a second body to my current A850.

2 years ago |How does it compare in size to the a350.
The A55 is just too small for my hands and was hoping the A77 will be at least the same size as my A350 or a bit bigger.
If it’s too small I’ll wait till the 400D comes out then decide if to switch system to Nikon or stick with Sony…
