(SR5) Zeiss E-mount Full Frame lens scheduled for a June 2014 release!

I had quite busy talks with sources in these days about the long term strategy from Sony. And I also got some bits about the Sony-Zeiss collaboration. First of all it is confirmed that the next three Zeiss primes (2.8/12, 1.8/32 and 2.8/50 macro) for the NEX system will cover APS-C only. But at the same time Sony and Zeiss made an agreement on FF E-mount lenses. And it works like that: Zeiss will now design at least three new E-mount Full Frame prime lenses. They will have to possibility to test the lenses on a non final prototype. Zeiss has scheduled the official release of the lenses for June 2014! Sources didn’t unveil me the detailed lens specs yet also because nothing is final yet. But one thing they told me…the lenses will be expensive to buy! And certainly more expensive than their current FF ZM series
Anyway, this rumor comes via top top and top sources. So it’s marked as SR5 but of course it’s a long way to go and the June date may change depending on how things will work out. Meantime feel free to share your expectation. I may do a poll with your suggested Zeiss FF NEX lenses to show Zeiss what it’s needed according to our SAR fellowship. Of course be aware that everything will come at a high cost. So dream the lens you can actually afford

Bring 1.4 lenses….AF doesnt matter….if thats the case…then there are already plenty lenses out there for you. 3000 for a lenses….plenty of lenses out there for you….
Bring 35mm F2, 50mm F2 and 85mm F2 all with AF.
With out AF what would be the point…there are already great 35mm 1.4 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.4 lenses out there that are high quality and manual focus….
If you make a bunch of 1.4 AF lenses no one would buy them cause 1….they would be to expensive, 2 they would be to dam big. Especially the 85mm!
Some of you just dont think. Just wet dream lenses that you probably wouldnt be ABLE to afford any way. I know that i couldnt afford a 85mm 1.4 af that is $2500(if that how much it would cost) nor would i want it cause it would be HUGE. Look at the samsung 85mm 1.4 and thats for CROP!!

All of you Nex fan boys who bought your camera at ‘Best Buy’ should visit http://www.43rumors.com/ a little more and keep of track where its at for “Compact” cameras like this…
I know, I owned a GH2 as well, Nex cant compare… AND the GH3 is better !

4 months ago |You seem to forget one important fact. Sony commissioned Zeiss to make 3 top-of-the-line lenses. On the other hand, the ZMs have slow and affordable lenses because Zeiss wanted to cater to a wide spectrum of customers. This is not what Sony asked Zeiss to design. If I have to pay premium, then I would want both speed and quality in the same package. It’s not a matter of either or. Faster lens has more flexibility; you can’t just go to f/1.4 with an f/2 lens. Most would know that designing a good f/2 is much easier than designing a good f/1.4. But why would you want to settle for less when you pay top dollar? Because of size? If it is so, Sony G/Sigma/Samyang/Tamron would fill in that space. Don’t ask for a less than premium from Zeiss.
And by the way, your argument of Zeiss don’t believe in faster is better is baloney. They will release an uncompromised line-up with 3000 Euros each lens. And guess what? All of them have f/1.4.

4 months ago |Some of the big questions to be answered:
1) Can Sony make a FF NEX and FF lenses that are significantly smaller/lighter than smaller FF DSLRs such as the Nikon D600 and Canon 6D? If not that much smaller, then what problem does it solve in the marketplace?
2) What will be the price? If priced very high relative to FF DSLR systems…then can it compete? Sure Leica does well but it is a very small but lucrative niche market. And most who can afford that type of setup will go with Leica due to the brand name and mystique. Sony has to be careful to not price too high.

Sure a Broadcast cam cost lot’s of money, but also show you mean business. You get a lot of cam with these little cams that all in the business bring, but to be taken very seriously you need a large cam. This is not to say you can’t do with less, you can. Many people look on NEX FF as on FF EVIL – IN THE SIZE of a rangefinder.
If size of lenses will be too big – I hope to use rangefinder lenses (I don’t care for perfect edges sharpness) – as I need f/1.4 DOF in center and around.
If I need to have edge to edge sharpness – then I would use u43.
That is reason what I wrote – big size due to AF is not a must.
I prefer manual focusing fast lenses, with great EVF, touchable LCD (or even better eye tracking AF) and peaking!

4 months ago |What does it mean – “too large”?
Today on VG-900 which is a NEX camera the Zeiss lenses 85/1.4 and 135/1.8 and 24-70 work better than on A99. What is the issue?
The problem wiht NEx lens is the ability to take advantage of the small flange distance. As we have seen with the Zeiss 24/1.8 Carl Zeiss decided to make the lens bigger in order to distance the rear lens from the camera sensor and thus improve light incidence i.e. bring it closer to perpendicular (telecentric).
So the question with these new lenses really is how much smaller can these be compared to arbitrary Alpha lens + EA1 or EA3 adapter. Worst case they will be bulky same as if you are using Alpha lens with adapter. Ideally the lenses will be same size as Leica M lenses.
I belive we will see middle ground. Wide angles will be big, 50mm and longer lenses will be a bit smaller than their DSLR equivalents (in the upper bound 300/2.8 lens plus camera will be identical to DSLR + similar lens). Possibly a prime between 35-60mm being optimal in terms of size i.e. little need to make lens longer to optimize light incidence angle and the combo of Full Frame NEX + such lens being considerably smaller than Nikon D600 plus similar lens.

4 months ago |You can’t argue to let Zeiss do what they do best – and simultaneously criticize the choices they make as inadequate. When they choose f2 and f2.8 for many of the common focal lengths in the ZM range, I respect them because I know it’s because the lenses are optically superior.
Read what Erwin Putz says. When you try to push a Gaussian 50 faster than f1.5 you need extra elements. This robs contrast and alters the intrinically corrected properties of a symmetrical lens. For any given combination of lens technology ED, ASPH, f2 can be made better.
It’s why I respect Zeiss over Canon and Nikon, they don’t bow popular sentiment that faster is always better.

Rolleiflex
4 months ago |It’s obviously easier to design a slower lens with better performance. However, it’s already suggested that these Zeiss lenses will be top of the line with premium price tag. So why would you want them to just make a f/2 line-up? There is only so much you can do given the certain lens size and aperture. Unless they use APO and lots of ASPH/ED/LD/UD elemtns, I don’t see the tiny extra gain from size and weight would worth it. If you want to see the less compromised, look no further than the Sony G and Sigma/Tokina/Tamron/Samyang. Let Zeiss do what they do best (just like their recently announced “no compromise,” Ultra Performance, 3,000 Euros line-up). People like you that send out mixed signal to Sony so that they end up with a pathetic 35/2 on the RX-1.

4 months ago |f2 is a better design sweet spot for normal to wide lenses. Generally they are sharper, contrastier and have better bokeh even if not as pronounced. Eg. the Zeiss planar 50/2 is far sharper and contrastier than the Sonnar 50/1.5. Likewise the current summicron 50/2 compared with the older Summilux 50/1.4 and the summicron has smoother bokeh. The current summicron 50/2 even out-performs the 50/1.4 asph over most of it’s range.
Once, you have one larger and heavier normal lens – say f1.2 or f1.4 with good bokeh, it’s mostly enough. f2 works well for other focal lengths.

5 months ago |The Zeiss APS-C lenses will work on E or X mount. Despite what Fuji says I remain unconvinced that a true full-frame sensor will fit in the X mount. Plus they don’t seem to have the design/fab resources to build a full-frame any time soon. The X system is very good and the Zeiss will be a good fit there. Plus, a lot of NEX-7/6 users are probably happy to stay APS-C but would love the 18 or 32mm lenses.
Poki
5 months ago |Full frame f/1.4 lenses? No thanks. They’re just too damn huge – especially for a mirrorless system which is made to be small. If the sensor is full frame, then we can just as well go for a one stop higher ISO without loosing too much IQ or DoF while maintaining acceptably small and light f/2 lenses.
Roni
5 months ago |Couldn’t agree more. I can’t afford to dump thousands into camera bodies every couple years and still afford nice lenses. The D600 has shown that you can make a stunning FF sensor in a great SLR body for less than $2k (the prices were really cheap after xmas). The NEX cameras have fewer parts. Prism is replaced by EVF, no AF motor, no shutter, no mirror, etc. So the FF nex really shouldn’t be a pro model. It should be an enthusiast model priced at current NEX 7 prices, and pros will use it. A lot of pros are using NEX5Ns rather than NEX7s and slapping leica glass on top. The goal should be affordable quality, not unaffordable limit-pushing quality.
I’d really like to see Sony come out with a FF NEX that is identical to the NEX 6 for $500 more max. Then I might be able to afford one of these new zeiss lenses.

5 months ago |I sit corrected! Not sure what the flange distance on M-mount is?
Joel Richards
5 months ago |Actually if you look at the current ZM prices (which are probably the best indicators) the wider the lens the more expensive–until you get to 135mm. The wide angle lenses take more glass and precision to get right. Personally I don’t think these Zeiss lenses will be faster than f2.0. That additional stop traditionally adds a lot of size, weight, and cost. Leica does it but even their summilux line is considerably bigger than the summicron (or at least it was until summicrons started becoming APO). Also Zeiss seems to use less aspherical elements than some other manufacturers. That may help with things like bokeh and aberrations but it means a bigger lens. A full-frame NEX will, like all camera systems, be a balance and a compromise. Plus f2.0 gives you a very narrow depth of field on a full-frame camera. If the bokeh is creamy and the focus plane flat and sharp I’ll be happy.
JesperMP
5 months ago |FW 1.01 did change some things.
I have followed the discussions regarding color cast in several forums, and the verdict ranges from “totally fixed” to “still totally unusable”.

5 months ago |The RX1 seems to suggest that full-frame capable processors have finally started to shrink (in cost, size, and thermal requirements) to where a NEX FF may be possible. Personally I’d like a *slightly* wider camera to leave more space between the grip and the mount and possibly a grip big enough to hold the larger Alpha series batteries. Then add a terminal to allow for a bottom grip that would ease portrait shooting and give the camera mass when shooting with a telephoto.

ff nex ($2500) + cz lense ($1500) = thats at least $4000 to enter the new world ff nex.

ff nex… lol i wonder how many compromises it will had againts the a99, how many lost features, will it sell?
olympus and panasonic had a clear path and market share with a smaller sensor, nikon had an even smaller one and selling good (at least when they slashed the price in half), and sony that had a stronghold, that its leader in some parts of the world, think “i should get a bigger sensor, expensive cameras and bodies… i want E more like A” and they will be there, like they are now with A in the canikon world, i see they giving up market share in the next years if they follow that path.

5 months ago |Personally I would not care much about the price if the quality is top notch. If it is supposed to be a premium line, then they should not hold back for the sake of size. Sigma/Sony/Samyang can do other small, slow primes. There are some people willing to pay for top quality. For the mass crowd (though why would the mass going for FF anyway), they would be fine with Sony and 3rd party lenses. Ideally, they should offer:
Stop making f/2 lenses. 25/1.4 (stop making all these 1.8-2 already), 55/1.4 (easier to design than a 50 for both sharpness and bokeh), 85/1.4 or 90/2 APO (either go fast with a bit more compromise at WO, or go extreme with APO). If they can come up with this, they would be surprised how well it will sell (just as the NEX-7 and 5n). There is no point going with f/2 line-up for small size since it would be of much less value compared to larger system. Mirrorless is about the flexibility of going extremely small (on relative basis) or going for extreme quality with slightly smaller in size than DSLR.

5 months ago |Before anyone contemplates the potential prices, remember that ZM lenses are manual focus only and many of them are priced competitively (cross system) to their own FF SLR lenses. FF AF lenses would be quite unique in the mirrorless world and thus Sony will profit greatly from it. Cough up if you want them.
I imagine a price of about $1300 for a 35mm f2, and $800 for a 50mm 1.4. I want to say I want something similar, if not slightly better, than the current FF 35mm 2 biogon for M mount for that price. 5 months ago |Hmm.. what about A mount? Are Zeiss making more lenses for the A mount?
I personally would prefer A mount..since with A i can use a adapter and use it on the NEX system. But i cant do E to A..

5 months ago |All else being equal, I expect FF lenses to be much bigger and heavier than APS-C only lenses. Reason enough for me.

5 months ago |A lot of users want quality, but may want to put money towards lenses and not pay a premium to buy a FF NEX. I suspect the price of the FF NEX over a future APS-C NEX would be enough to cover a very nice lens. Plus, if just 1 – 3 very good lenses are available at introduction then I probably wouldn’t upgrade until more lenses are available. I’d need a 35/1.4 and 50/1.4 at the very least. So the wait could be into 2015 or 2016 and a second generation of the FF NEX (assuming AF of the 1st generation isn’t much better than the RX1) before many NEX users choose to upgrade, if we upgrade. Good glass is still important at the APS-C level.

5 months ago |Andrea, do Zeiss&Sony have any plan to make Zeiss A-mount lenses (after 50 1.4)?
And do they plan to update current ones similar way like they are updaing 70-200 and 70-400? Would be nice to get weather resistance for 16-80 and 24-70.

5 months ago |I think the FF-NEX will be in the same price range the a99 is (like NEX-7 and a77). Short Zeiss lenses will be around 1.500€, longer e.g. 135mm will be more expensive…

5 months ago |“FF E-mount lenses”
does this mean, that all old lenses, like contax g for example can be adapted at the new FF nex like on a APS-C nex?
Bill
5 months ago |They can do what they are doing now, but in full frame mode. Build the body using an E-mount but also include a A to E mount adaptor. If they can get the on-sensor autofocus working well it can be an electronic pass through adaptor like the LA-EA1 or LA-EA3 or if they cannot it can be a full frame version of the LA-EA2. There is no particular reason the body itself has to be small like the current NEX line. You can put the E-mount on a new version of the A99, add in the LA-EA4 and have both a versatile full frame DSLR and a mirrorless camera, although in that case not super compact.
Right now part of the reason for large full frame bodies is the need for larger more powerful processors. Eventually the processors will advanced to the point they can be as small and as power efficient as ones in cameras like the RX100. Then the only physical consideration for the bodies, is holding the camera, holding the lens and places to stick buttons and screens.

Can’t wait for the FF mirrorless.
I hope they take the incredible Contax-G lens designs more than the ZMs.

5 months ago |I’ll buy them anyways – but only because there’s no ff E-Mount stills camera yet and APS-C has some dof advantages for video use. I don’t know what I’ll do with my three APS-C Zeiss lenses once the ff system is released though …

5 months ago |Good news as I’ll be saving for the NEX-9 FF and won’t buy any additionals E-Mount lenses unless they cover Fullframe… And I’ll have to save extra for at least 1 Zeiss lens
Lucas
5 months ago |If this E-mount FF becomes reality, I hope Sony will design a NEX FF body capable of handling both E and A-mount lenses comfortably! Current NEX bodies are too small for the larger A lenses. Keeping A-77/99 like bodies ( either SLT or mirrorles or even a hybrid ) for A-mount would be the ideal.

5 months ago |Also Zeiss ZM lenses already work great on NEX, and are future proof. The ZM25 is supposed to be Zeiss’s sharpest ever wide lens.

Simon_P
5 months ago |So those 3 FF E-mount will under Zeiss, or Sony Zeiss?
And we can expect a full range of coverage of E-mount FF?….So that is time to sell out all current A and E-mount lens before they become vintage? A-mount I know they will offer adapter, but that is not compact enough, and the af doesnt design base on contrast af. For current E-mount, they only cover APSC

5 months ago |An FF E-Mount … what does that mean for the SLT series? Can’t imagine that Sony will support two mounts forever.

5 months ago |Well ZM FF lenses are manual focus only. These will probably be autofocus.
I expect them to be priced as Alpha Zeiss lenses.
That should be fair.

5 months ago |Any news on the G zoom or 85mm emount?
admin
5 months ago |Yep , I admit it sounded strange that the already announced Zeiss primes would be FF. The good news is that this allowed me to talk about that with sources that are from a very high level. Now everything is 100% clear.

5 months ago |There will be Sony G lenses too. Don’t worry
Vivek
5 months ago |Two thoughts:
1. I was convinced that the Zeiss primes will be only APS-C (I said so earlier).
2. From a price perspective, Leica are quite attractive. This is no exaggeration at all and I am speaking from what I would spend my money on.
