Sony interview at DC.watch: Says no (interchangeable) medium format system camera to come yet. New A-mount stuff will come.

dcsony

Sony manager Maki Kimio has been interviewed at DC.watch. In short this is what he said:

1) SLT cameras have the advantage of larger bodies. There is more space we can use to implement certain tech (SAR note: He doesn’t mention what exactly they plan to do). And he confirms they will continue to develop A-mount cameras and lenses.

2) Increase sensor size or increase Megapixel numbers is things we will do if customers demand for it.

3) Main demand for now is improve the autofocus performance

4) It is very likely to see different kind of (non-Bayer) sensor in future. But it’s not a concrete matter yet. Vertical layered RGB sensor (like Foveon) are yet very difficult to “process”

5) Light Field camera is something Sony is studying and may could come in a not so distant future.

6) In near future we wills ee more advanced Hybrid Mechanical-electronic shutters

7) Sony says DSLR sales are down because of lack in innovation. Sales of mirrorless are up because they became more advanced (not only because of the more compact size).

8) Both APS-C and Full Frame sensor cameras have a future. Wild life photographers prefer APS-C while landscape photographers prefer FF.

9) We will not make a Medium format system camera yet because we are already busy working to broaden our A and E-mount lens line.

10) It might not be so important to add 5 axis on the A7r yet.

Just a note on medium format: So far the rumors about medium format Sony cameras talk about fixed lens cameras. Sony is for now only excluding that it’s a system camera.

Merry Christmas dear SAR fellowship!

The lens is an absolute bargain if you consider it’s a hari close to the Zeiss Outs which costs 4 times as much. Read the reviews at 3DKraft, Photozone, CameraLabs or DxOmark.

Sunset Crashers
We visited Shore Acres, near Coos Bay on the coast of Oregon the day after Thanksgiving to look at the Christmas light display, but arrived early enough to take in the sunset over the big waves first. I like the many tiny little lights, but this is so much better.

Small bug warning on the A7II image stabilization (can and will be fixed by Sony via firmware upgrade)

Sony a7 II Sensor Stabilization/SteadyShot INSIDE Test (filmed with a7S) by Tony Northrup.

Like on any new camera release there are always annoying bugs that hopefully will be fixed soon. The A7II has a strange bug on the 5 axis stabilization settings. David Sampson (Viramati) found the bug and Jono Slack sums it up at Dpreview:

If you attach a 3rd party lens after using an OSS (eg the 24-70 FE) lens then IBIS does not work
If you attach a 3rd party lens after using a non OSS lens (eg the 55 f1.8) then IBIS does work.

This is a bug that can (and I am sure Sony “will”) be fixed via firmware upgrade.

UPDATE: There is a workaround to fix the issue when it appears. David S. sent me this:

If you unmount (take off) an OSS lens without turning the camera off (or at least turn it off after you have removed the lens) then when you attach a third party (dumb) adaptor ‘steady shot’ (IBIS) continues to work normally. Of course this is not a thing a photographer would normally do as it usually common sense to turn the camera off when changing lenses so would still benefit from a firmware upgrade
