SAR reader Andrea sent me his Lens Turbo first impression:
“First of all congrats for your great blog, I usually follow your updates every day. I bought a lensturbo for canon fd lenses by the Shanghai eBay seller you posted the link. I received it two days ago. I tested it with my 50mm and it is fantastic to see the larger frame and, it seems, a better contrast and sharpness. The weak point is the already known issue of the blue spot when facing a light or the sun, but is not such a big issue.
The real problem came when I tested the lens turbo with the canon fd 20mm. I almost risked to ruin the rear/back lens of the 20mm! The fact is that when you are trying to reach the infinity focus the rear lens of the 20mm protrusion hit the front lens of the lens turbo!!
That problem is not mentioned by the seller and also by the reviewer (the martist, you linked in a post). I wrote to both. The reviewer only write to me he doesn’t have this problem. This is strange because the lensturbo seller just wrote to me:
Hi Andrea, Thanks for the message… Indeed the FD 20/2.8 can not use… the rear lens protrusion will hit the lens… sorry… I think you can only focus up to 3 meter, right ? except for the 20, the other lenss 28, 35, 50, 85 all can use.. best, R.J. – jinfinance
Therefore I’m writing this to you because I want to avoid that the same thing happens to others.
I’d also like to know if other lensturbo buyers had the same problem as I did.
Here is a roundup of all mails to tests and work done by SAR reader. If you have links to send me (or if I missed to post a work you sent me in the past) contact me at sonyalpharumors@gmail.com.

Jonathan: “Hi Andrea, I made a comparison video between the new and old 70-400 with focus speed and sharpness comparisons. My conclusion: the focusing is MUCH better on the new lens, but the IQ is pretty close. Check out the video: http://youtu.be/QzKQWqTUJ6Y”
Sergey: “I am a photographer from Russia. March 1, 2013 I started my “Project 365” with the camera Sony NEX-6. Every day I make one picture and write a story about photo and the camera. This is my fifth NEX – and the camera is so good, that I started this project: http://nex6everyday.blogspot.ru/”
Gkemp: “I modded a Meike clone VG-B50AM grip so it can be used with my a55, allowing me to power the a55 with a pair of NP-FM500H batteries and get use of the shutter release. For details, see my set on flickr linked below. Feel free to share pics with SAR readers if you like. Just thought I would pass this info around in case others find it useful. http://www.flickr.com/photos/gkemp/sets/72157633542391862/with/8756515667/”
Anders: “Hello, I haven’t seen any pictures by people using professional Sony equipment. If you like to, do I have a picture I took yesterday with a Sony a99, and Sony Carl Zeiss 16-35mm F/2.8. The video on top has been made by SAR reader Arthur Fritz. The good news is that the Zeiss Touit is finally shipping! But it seems X-mount version is shipping first. You can find FUji versions right now in shoplink 18719 ebay]US (eBay)[/shoplink] and Europe (Holland).
It would help all SAR readers if you cna let us know where the Touit for NEX is in Stock. Send me an email or submit the deal at DealsRunner.com. That way your submitted deal will be displayed on the sidebar of this website and you don’t have to wait for me reading your mail and writing the post. Thanks!
Small update on the newly announced Rokinon 300mm f/6.3 lens. It’s going to ship in July for $299. And on top of this post you can see the video showing the new lens. What I didn’t know until now (Thanks Mike) is that Rokinon already has a Mirror lens for Sony. It is the Rokinon 500mm f/6.3 for A-mount ([shoplink 18677 ebay]can be found here one Bay[/shoplink]).
The New York Times posted an interesting article about Sony. As you know Hedge fond leader Mr. Loeb has a considerable share in Sony. Last week he asked Sony to drop the electronic business. But Sony CEO Hirai gave him a (metaphoric) kick in the butt and this is his answer:
“Mr. Loeb’s prescriptions for Sony are shortsighted, merely milking the company’s profit-making content business for good money to throw after the bad….He defended the company’s continued focus on electronics. “Electronics has a future. And it is in Sony’s DNA,” he said at a corporate presentation. “It is my mission to revive it.”
There are some glimmers that Sony is finding its way again, even as Apple and Samsung widen their lead. Sony’s sleek new XPeria Z smartphone has received generally rave reviews. Photography buffs have called its high-end, full-frame RX1 camera the most advanced compact camera.
“Not so long ago, we had despaired at Sony’s ability to ever again produce stellar products (especially when faced with duds like the Dash alarm clock and the Rolly music player),” Damian Thong, Tokyo-based technology analyst at Macquarie Securities, said in a report published Thursday.
“Yet we now have had a consistent run of beautifully designed, technologically advanced, class-leading products,” Mr. Thong said. “We think these products hark back to Sony’s glory days.”
Editor’s note: I like MR. Hirai way of thinking. A company is not only about making money, but also about dreaming and doing something. Also Mr.Dell told Steve Jobs to quit the Apple company (in the mid 90’s). And see what happened after. You don’t solve a problem by selling what doesn’t work. If you do that every time you have a problem you end up with not having a company anymore :)
Olympus manager Hiroyuki Sasa confirmed at Toyokeizai (Google translation here) that they are supplying Sony with their camera and lens tech. Also AP reports that “The imaging sensor has already started to source from Sony to Olympus. And the lens [parts] and lens units will start to source from Olympus to Sony.”
As I told you last week the first A-mount lens to come with Olympus design is the 400mm f/4.0. That lens will be launched in early 2014 along the first A-mount mirrorless cameras. Olympus is known for their superb Zuiko lens design that is second to no one. And they may do a f/2.0 zoom for Sony one day like their current [shoplink 17943 ebay]14-35mm f/2.0 (here on eBay)[/shoplink] and [shoplink 18657 ebay]35-100mm f/2.0 (here on eBay)[/shoplink] lenses. That would be crazy!
By the way, is there some other tech or idea you would like to grab from Olympus?
