Reviewed at SonyAlphaBlog: Sony 300mm f/2.8 GM including testing with TC1.4 and TC2.0

Preorders: Sony 300mm at BHphoto. Amazon US&EU. Adorama. FotoErhardt. Fotokoch. Calumet. WexUK.

SonyAlphaBlog reviewed the new lens and concluded:

If you are a sports, wildlife or fashion photographer, the Sony 300mm F2.8 GM OSS (6700 euros) is your dream lens.

For Sports photographers the A9III and its 120fps will allow you to get the right shoot for indoor sports or in a stadium with exceptional AF tracking and low light capabilities
For Wildlife photographers , they will benefit from the 61Mpix of the A7RIV / A7RV for further cropping
For Fashion it will allow to completely blur out the background and have very nice 3D effects

With the TC1.4 performance stays excellent , whereas for TC2.0 it become more difficult to us with only very good results wide open and ISO climbing fast if you close to F8 and keep a high shutter speed

Matt Granger: Designing a NO COMPROMISE Sony Flagship camera

Matt Granger got quite some heat from this video. But I kindly ask to make rational arguments why you agree or disagree with him. Personally I asked some time ago to make a sort of Sony A99 styled E-mount camera. I understand many do NOT need this…but there might be some that need a bigger for the reasons Matt and I did mention in our videos.

So let me know in the comment system what your thoughts are about this!

Tamron interview: Fast primes and lenses with aperture ring might be an option

Photorend interviewed Kota Misawa, Marketing Planning manager in the Imaging Products BU at Tamron.

A couple of key info he shared:

About the Tamron Utility and possible iOS APP:

The Tamron Lens Utility was updated on September 21 last year, improving operability and supporting Z-mount lenses. And we plan to update the app twice this year. New functions will be added.
On the other hand, regarding the version for iOS, we have difficulty doing so. It’s quite difficult to develop.

About the possibility of making fast prime lenses:

For now, we cannot say what our roadmap will be. But if there is strong demand for wide aperture prime lenses from our users, we will definitely look into this topic.

About adding an aperture ring on future lenses:

We believe that whether or not to add the aperture ring depends on the concept of each lens and the target audience. Until now, we have favored compactness and lightness.
But we would like to consider adding one for users who need an aperture ring. It is therefore possible that we will develop this type of objectives in the future.

About video optimized lenses:

Absolutely, we think that suppressing focus breathing , quiet motors and autofocus tracking performance are more important than just focusing speed. And we would like to strengthen these aspects in the future as well, while adapting to the most advanced cases.

As you know the latest financial report disclosed that Tamron wants to launch six new lenses in 2024. But not all of them will be new lenses. Some of them will be Z or X-mount version of current E-mount lenses.
