Towerjazz believes Nikon should not count on Sony sensors when Sony also has their own cameras

Well I wasn’t expecting that TowerJazz manager to be that direct. At minute 8 of the video above you hear him say that

He sees a problem in the fact that Sony is also a camera market. So for example if there is competition on the supply Sony may give themselves the benefit instead of Nikon.

Of course Towerjazz is a direct Sony competitor and has an obvious interest to win over client like Nikons. But I guess that yes it must somehow uncomfortable for Nikon to know that they totally depend from Sony’s will.

There are wild rumors saying that Samsung is planing to make APS-C and FF sensors again in collabroation with Fuji (read the ISOCELL Plus press stext here). Maybe Nikon should try to partner with them?

New firmware update for the Viltrox 85mm FE lens

Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 at Amazon US, Amazon DE, Amazon UK, Amazon FR, Amazon ES, Amazon IT.

Both the manual focus and autofocus versions of the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 FE lens got a new firmware update:

And Marc Alhadeff tested the autofocus version of the lens:

The Viltrox 85mm F1.8 PFU RMBH STM (379 euros) is an very good AF lens for portraits for which it will give superb results :
For a first AF lens , AF performances are good (like Sigma or First Samyang lenses) without being as reliable as a Sony or latest Samyang
Performances are globally excellent (same as Viltrox 85mm F1.8 PFU RMBH MF) and as you have seen in the samples provided, very close to the Sony FE85mm F1.4 GM

Pros
Very good to Excellent sharpness

Beautiful color rendition
Very pleasing and soft blurry background ,
Very good bokeh,
Good price
Very good build quality,
EXIF transmitted to the body,
Fast and silent AF
Strong vignetting but corrected via the Lightroom Zeiss Batis 85mm profile
Good resistance to flare

Medium
AF reliable in 80% of the case @F1.8 : good but not as excellent as the Sony or Samyang 85mm

Moderate CA when facing sun

For 379 euros against 630 euros for the Sony 85mm F1.8 , the Viltrox will give you a better blurry background and bokeh but with a less good AF

Up to you to see which criteria from Price, AF, Bokeh are the most important for you

An excellent optics considering its price and a brand to follow up !
