If you are curious to see how well the new 200-600G does with the Sony A7III check out this report from Gustav Kiburg. Full size image samples can be downloaded here.

Last Sunday I did photograph the Kingfishers. And this time I used the A7III, because that is the camera that most people do own.
I  am very happy with the results. Of course the A7III has almost the same sensor as the A9 (both 24MP) , but also with the A7III the AF is pretty fast.
With the kingfishers I had low light, that’s why I used 1000, 1600 and 2000 iso, to have enough shutter speed.

The Kingfishers I have taken at 600mm f/6.3. I’m really impressed with this lens.
They young little owl I have taken with the A9 and 1.4 TC + 200-600

Real world 200-600mm versus 100-400mm size comparison

DC.watch posted a set of new images of the new Sony 200-600mm and 600mm lenses. The image on top caught my attention. You see the new 200-600mm size compared with the 100-400mm lens when fully extended. It’s hard to choose between the two lenses because:

The 100-400mm lens should be sharper, is a tiny bit faster and it’s definitely a lot shorter and easier to carry around
The 200-600mm lens has way more tele reach, no extending zoom and it’s cheaper than the GM

And here are a few more images:

First Tamron 17-28mm FE lens review: It’s even a bit sharper than the Sony 16-35mm GM!

The 999 Euro Tamron 17-28mm FE versus the 2400 Euro Sony 16-35mm GM

The German folks from Krolop&Gerst posted the world’s first full review of the new Tamron 17-28mm FE lens. It’s a 30 minute long video in German (activate auto translation if you don’t speak german).

In Summary this is what the reviewer had to say:

– Center of image: At 17mm the Tamron is as sharp as the Sony at 17mm in the
– Border of the image: At 17mm the Tamron is sharper on the edges than the Sony at 17mm
– At 28mm same kind of results
– At 28mm the 17-28mm FE is as sharp as the 28-75mm FE
– The 17-28mm FE is as sharp as the Sony 28mm f/2.0 prime lens (and the prime lens has more Chromatic Aberrations)
– There is only little chromatic aberration (green and not magenta)
– Color looks very natural
– Autofocus is fast

Overall this is an excellent lens!

Don’t forget that today the preorders will open at 11pm Eastern time at BHphoto, Amazon, FocusCamera, BuyDig and Adorama.

SAR note: To be fair the Sony 16-35mm GM also has a much wider focal range which obviously makes it a bit more difficult to achieve absolute sharpness.

First impression review of the new Sony 200-600 G by Gustav Kiburg

This is the first impression report by Dutch wildlife shooter Gustav Kiburg:

This is not a test, but my impression and feeling about the new 200-600 G of SONY:

First, the look of the lens is very nice, very good build, also the hood is very strong. But the most important thing is how it acts in the field.
I am a wildlife photographer, and SONY-ambassador this is the lens we were waiting for, because a lot of time the 100-400 is not enough. I am not making a comparison between this lens and the 100-400 GM, I only looked on how it performs in real world:

The lens is pretty fast, and sharp. I don’t say that it as fast and sharp as the 100-400, but it comes close, very close. Personally I think you cannot compare them, because its 400 at the end,  against 600mm at the end. But the sharpness and the speed is very good.

I also used the 1.4 TC, to see if there is a big loss of detail, but there is not as you can see from the image samples. When using the teleconverter you can sustain the autofocus speed, by using the right focus-limiter: You have FULL , 2.4 till 10 METER , and from 10 till infinite. If you chose the right focus limiter, it helps enough to get the bird fast enough in focus.

Ii like the internal zoom. For me, this lens is a must have:  Specially for wildlife, in hides, or outdoor sports, its is a great lens and it cost around 2100 euro.

To be clear: I got this lens as a loan from Sony, and I have to give it back. I don’t get paid by Sony either. This is my honest first impression to help people if they want to buy this lens,

Gustav Kiburg
