Sony RX100V review by Cinema5D and Digitalrev

There is also a new review by Cinema5D. Of course being a video blog site their focus is on the video performance of the camera:

In my opinion, the Sony RX100 V remains a camera with a split identity. On the one hand, it is a technological wonder which integrates the same engine as Sony’s a99II flagship camera in a tiny space. Additionally, it offers a feature-rich video manual control options including some that are hard to find in even more expensive and advanced devices from other respected manufacturers. Also, the improved autofocus in video mode is a pleasure to work with. On the other hand, many functions are “almost there”. A body with a mic interface but no headphone jack, HFR with almost HD quality and continuous shooting mode that might be great for photographers but almost useful to videographers. I’m fully aware that this is not a professional shooting device, and for now it can serve as a great family companion and second camera to just throw in the bag and keep handy for any production. But with a little extra attention and open ear to video enthusiasts, (especially when sales graphs are proving that video professionals would like to use that type of equipment),  this camera could have become a real gem!

Digitalrev writes:

With a fast card we were able to capture 65 RAW and JPEG images before filling the buffer, which is something many larger cameras can’t do. It was ridiculously fast in testing, although we do wonder what’s the necessity of all this firepower in such a small camera, since ultimately image quality will be limited due to the sensor size and lens.

Crazy 1897 Lens Hack for Sony Cameras

Bohus sent me this video and the following message: “I just created a bunch of videos showing of the versatility of the Sony camera platform by mounting lots of different vintage lenses to the camera. I thought that you might get a kick out of this video, where I mount a lens from 1897 through a crazy amount of mounting hackery. ;)

RX100 V shoots 5.5K video using the high speed photo burst mode (first test by Newsshooter)

Newsshooter tested one of the new RX100m5 features that didn’t get on the screen radar of most reviewers:

One of the more interesting specifications of the new Sony RX100 V is that it can shoot still photos at full 20 megapixel resolution at a blistering 24 frames a second (fps). It can do this for around six seconds or so in either top quality JPEG or Raw at a resolution of 5472 x 3648 in 3:2 aspect, or 5472 x 3080 in 16×9. This raises the prospect that you could combine these photos in sequence to create a super high resolution/low compression video clip which should allow a high degree of image adjustment – albeit with no audio.

Teh caveat with this is that you can shoot 6sec only, you got no audio, the camera stops and needs a lot of time to write the data and in some situation it shoots at 17fps instead of 24fps. That said Newshhooter writes the overall resolution and detail of the images is really impressive though.

Digitalrev attacks Sony’s A6300&A6500 release strategy

bildschirmfoto-2016-10-07-um-18-40-39

Digitalrev attacked Sony’s A6300 and A6500 strategy:

This is a depressingly short-sighted approach from Sony (might I add, even for Sony standards), since the A6300 was only announced in February and shipped in March. Instead of launching an A6300/A6500 hybrid as a more complete product at Photokina for example, Sony released a good, but not perfect A6300 in February.

Well I have to play the devils (Sony’s) adovcate to balance the story:

  1. The A6500 does NOT replace the A6300 and costs $400 more which is really a lot more $$$
  2. The current A6300 did not get any price drop. If you paid $1,000 for your camera and are happy with it you shouldn’t feel screwed at all.

The real weakness with the Sony APS-C E-mount system are the lenses. Sony cannot expect A6xxx camera owners to buy FE lenses only! They are bigger, have not the “right” focal length and you pay more for it than you should (more glass in use in FF lenses).

And Dpreview posted an article about “what’s changed, and what still needs to change”. They have a couple of complains and imrpovements suggestions. The touchscreen is too laggy and one more annoying thing is:

the a6500’s battery life rating has actually decreased compared to the a6300 by over 10%. It goes without saying that’s a change in the opposite direction than we would like.
