One thing is certain: In 2021 we can expect the Canon vs Sony battle to intensify. Nikon and the L-mount organization can’t keep up with their pace.

As a first move we can expect Sony to launch their 8K E-mount camera. But according to new rumors Canon will also release a 90 Megapixel EOS-R5s camera with a 300MP “pixel shift” modus. I don’t know yet if Sony will also release their High resolution Sony A7rV in 2021 already. But Sony has a 102MP FF sensor with 6K video capability they could use for this. This sensor specs were already leaked in 2019 so it may be that a future A7rV uses an “improved” version with 8K?

Still, Sony has a busy year: First the A9III (or A9r) than we will get the A7IV. So I don’t know if there is room for a Sony A7rV this year too!

About those rumors: I have no idea who sent them and 90% of the times they turn out to be wrong. But, it happened in the past that a couple of those were right. So I will post them today, and we all together can eventually keep track of this. If one of the sources turns out to be right than we will know we can trust it a bit more!

Source 1:

a6100 will update during first half of 2021 at will be compatible with the enterprise SDK

ILCE-7M4 uses the old sensor as a7 III.

XAVC HS 10Bit 4:2:0 & 10bit 4:2:2; XAVC S 8Bit 4:2:0 & 10Bit 4:2:2 supported. No XAVC S-I.

without 1.2x crop in 30p, also no 1.2x crop oversampling for 4K/50p or 60p like the FX9.

FHD Video: up to 180p (Full Frame S&Q mode)

• It will be named as an A9x series camera and not A7x (not sure if it’s “A9s” or “A9III”)
• It has a new ~50 megapixel sensor
• 8k30p video confirmed with no overheating. It’s still an “infant” 8k mode…meaning it’s not 8k60 which would be crazy and there will be limitations in the quality you can record internally.
• Other specs similar to A7sIII (EVF, autofocus, and so forth)
• At least $1,500 more expensive than the EOS-R5 (but price hasn’t be finalized yet) Expect something like $4,999.

I didn’t get any new specs about the new A9 camera yet. The latest I got is that a third reliable source now confirmed the A9 rumor is real:

What he also added is that Sony plans to release a lot of new FE lenses. Some of them brand new and a few of them are update of existing lenses.

I think A9r would make a lot of sense as a name because you get both: The speed of the A9 and the resolution of the “R” series…what do you think?

Chelsea and Tony Northrup summed up the 2021 predictions for Sony. Based on rumors and guesses this is what they expect:

Cameras:

• Sony A9III
• Sony A7IV
• Sony Drone camera

Lenses:

• 35mm f/1.4
• 16mm f/1.8
• 85mm f/1.2 (and maybe 50mm f/1.2)

They hope Sony will make a Cloud Service for Sony Alpha

Sigma has patented the design of fours different zoom lenses:

20-80mm f/4
24-100mm f/4.0
28-70mm f/2.8
28-100mm f/4

I think the 24-100mm f/4.0 would be a highly welcome addition!

Rumored Sony A7IV specs:

• In Q2 at earliest (Q3 more likely) we will also get the new A7IV.
• A74 will have a new sensor with faster readout and will not recycle the 24 MP one. My source told me it will be in the 30-32 MP region
• The EVF will have 3,69 Mdots and not 5,76 Mdots
• Most probably the LCD will also be on the cheap side but the image quality and AF will be top notch
• The video will certainly be 4K 60p and will feature the new menus.
• The price will be in the 2499$ region

Rumored entry level camera (RX?):

• Sony registered this new camera in Asia. It uses the code “WW186333“.
• It looks like this is a new entry level camera as it doesn’t use the 5Ghz Wifi range used by current A7-A9 models. This means it is likely a new RX model.

Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM:

• This is the first lens Sony will announce in 2021.

Sony 16mm f/1.8 GM:

• Was scheduled to be announced in late 2020 but productions issues moved the lens launch to very early 2021
• I have been told it has about the same size and build quality of the 24mm f/1.4 GM.

Sony A7sIII firmware:

• A7SIII will get a V2.0+ Firmware update to support QFHD/120p 12Bit RAW Output via HDMI before IBC2021.

Sigma FE lenses:

• Due the autofocus bugs 70-200mm f/2.8 FE lens launch still delayed
• More fast FE primes coming in 2021
