Just my two cent speculations (and I am probably wrong on this): Sony medium format camera? Or new Sony A7rIII with 60+ sensor?

I got these early specs of the a7Ⅲ that will be launched at earliest this Fall (there is still a chance it might get announced in early 2018). It’s from a good source but he himself told me that he cannot be 100% sure these specs will be confirmed on the final camera:

24Mpx
6fps with mechanical shutter
ISO up to 51200 (expanded to ISO 204800)
693 phase detection AF (which is same as a9!!)
minimum focus sensitivity is EV-3
4k 30p recording

So basically the A7III is an A9 without the crazy electronic shutter frame rate. It’s still unclear if the A7III will have the A9 body or keep the current A7II body design. My personal guess is that it will keep the A7II design which means it does not have dual SD card slot.

And this is from a new source (SR2 ranked):

The upcoming ILCE-7M3 will have the same sensor like A9 (almost same electronics inside), but technically down graded to justify a lower price. That means less frames per second speed, maybe no LAN-port and only single card slot. Battery could be the same.

One more thing: It’s yet unclear if the Sony A7rIII (I repeat “r” version!) will be announced with the A7III or a couple of months later.

In 2018 Nikon will launch their first Full Frame mirrorless system camera(s). It will be the first real competitor of the Sony FE system. And to make a splash it seems like they are working on launching very fast primes lenses.

The Japanese website Hi Lows Note spotted the patent of a new 50mm f/0.9 and 35mm f/1.2 lens. There are no such Sony FE lenses yet and for sure this would help Nikon to get some “attention” from photographers. So my take for Sony…beat them and make such lenses too :)

One trusted source who shared many correct info in the past told me this:

After yesterday, it is now time for next announcement. It’s about E-mount mirrorless system now. Within next 2 weeks for 90%

But so far I could not confirm this rumor with other trusted sources. One second trusted source said that yes for sure there will be an announcement some time before the PhotoPlus show (end of October). But he had no idea if the announcement will be within 2 weeks or later. I hope to be able to give you more info within the next few days.

“SR3” ranking explained:
While the one source whom shared the rumor is surely a trusted one I only do rank the rumor SR3 because it has not been confirmed by another trusted source yet. For now I give it a 60% chance that there might be an E-mount announcement within 2 weeks.

One more thing:
I can now confirm that journalists from all over the world are in Tokyo for a meeting with Sony. Sony paid their tickets and hotels. But none of the journalists have been told there might be an announcement. It happens 1-2 times a year that Sony invites journalists for a factory tour or interviews. So it might be that we won’t see any announcement today or tomorrow.

What can we expect to be announced by Sony?
What we know from sources is that new FE lenses should be announced really soon (135mm and 400mm FE). While I don’t expect a new A7 camera to be announced this month but I might be (hopefully for you) wrong.

Opteka will soon announce a new 28mm f/2.8 HD Multi-Coated E-mount Lens. Above you can see the first image.

Features:

But there might be a chance that this is a re-branded version of the current Meike E-mount lens  :(

Today (6pm Los Angeles time) Sony will announce the new Cine Alta FF camera (early specs here). I am yet not sure if there will be something else.

Today I got this completely unverified rumor. I post it as usual in the hope to get some feedback on this. The new source said A7sIII (or A9s) will come soon:

The interesting thing will be that is will house the worlds first full frame RGBW backlit stacked sensor. Giving us around 68% better low light performance over the original a7s sensors. It will also be capable of 4K 4:2:2 10bit color and 4K 60p but only at 8bit 4:2:0 full sensor readout. These are the things I am mostly sure of.

But like I said, it might be completely BS :)

Teaser of the Cine Alta launch (today at 6pm LA time)

I am starting to get more and more hints that today Sony might announce more than the CineAlta FF camera. I have no details yet but this seems to be something “major”. You can speculate if it might be an A7sIII, new FF E-mount camcorder, new FE lenses or medium format camera.

But like I wrote, this is SR3 for now and completely non confirmed. I am writing this in the hope to get some more details from sources reading this. Stay tuned!

UPDATE: There is a major press event in Japan with reporters and bloggers flying over to Sony.
