Weill we ever see a new medium format Sony camera?

While I am working on a new set of Sony Alpha rumors I invite you to let us know what camera and what lens you hope to get in 2026. First let’s look at the age of some of the cameras in need of a replacement:

  2. Sony a7S III — Announced Jul 28, 2020 — 5 years, 4 months old
  3. Sony FX3— Announced Feb 23, 2021 — 4 years, 9 months old
  4. Sony FX30— Announced Sep 28, 2022 — 3 years, 2 months old
  5. Sony a7R V — Announced Oct 26, 2022 — 3 years, 1 month old
  6. Sony ZV-E1 — Announced Mar 29, 2023 — 2 years, 8 months old
  7. Sony a6700 — Announced Jul 12, 2023 — 2 years, 5 months old
  8. Sony a7C II — Announced Aug 29, 2023 — 2 years, 3 months old
  9. Sony a7CR— Announced Aug 29, 2023 — 2 years, 3 months old

Sony typically refreshes each camera line on a roughly four-year cadence. On paper plenty of camera should be announced in 2026. And this not counting possible new surprises like medium format camera (I know it’s nearly impossible) or an APS-C RX camera.

But I’m excited because I’ve already heard that there will be even more interesting cameras than we had in 2025, and that they will be equipped with lots of new technology!

Sony 100mm GM macro at BHphoto, Amazon, Adorama, Fotokoch, Fotoerhardt, Calumet, WexUK, Clifton.

With the Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 Macro GM OSS, Alpha cameras have at last got the macro lens they deserve. The old 90mm was good, but this new lens is GREAT. The 100mm focal range gives you the perfect working distance and the 1.4x magnification captures larger-than-life-size images – but slap on a teleconverter and you can get up to 2.8x magnification, for mega-macro shots. The resolving power of this lens is amazing (and leagues better than the 90mm), even producing sharp results wide open with a 2x converter. The stabilization and autofocus deserve a shout out, too, making this a legitimate option for handheld shooting. This is every inch a GM-caliber optic and hands-down the finest E-mount macro lens on the market.

DPReview tested the Sony A7 V (A7V) dynamic range and writes:

We’ve had the opportunity to test the dynamic range for ourselves with the studio scene to see how it performs, and we can confirm: it is very impressive.

To start, this may be one of the most ISO invariant cameras we’ve seen to date when shooting with the mechanical shutter. That means you have a lot of room to preserve highlights by shooting at lower ISOs, then brightening the image in post (a workflow that also translates well to shooting with HDR in mind). In our tests, we saw essentially no shadow cost to an image shot at ISO 400, brightened to match an image shot at ISO 6400 with the same exposure settings.

It’s remarkable how quickly this camera went from “controversial” at launch to a clear winner. Early reactions to the Sony A7 V were mixed—partly because Sony didn’t clearly highlight its new dual gain output (DGO) pipeline and how it affects real-world image quality. Combined with its partially stacked sensor, the A7 V delivers excellent exposure latitude, highlight retention, and clean shadow recovery. In fact, testing shows it can lead rivals by nearly two stops of dynamic range over the Canon R6 III, with near-ISO invariance that’s ideal for HDR workflows and RAW editing. Chris & Jordan selected the Sony FX2 as the worst camera of the year!

In their usual professional and sober fashion 😉, Chris and Jordan analytically selected the best and worst gear of the year. The Sony A7V came close to taking the top spot, but the worst camera of the year was clearly the Sony FX2. As a SonyAlphaRumors admin, it pains me to admit that I can’t disagree with them!
