Sony confirms at Dpreview new A7s and new APS-C E-mount cameras are coming

Share

Dpreview interviewed Kenji Tanaka, VP and Senior General Manager of Sony’s Business Unit. Here are some info:

1) Sony knew about the competition FF mirrorless plan. Tanaka said “I already predicted that Canon and Nikon would join the market, and even Panasonic. It wasn’t a surprise to me.

2) About going Medium format:Right now there are a lot of things still to do with full-frame sensors, so at the moment I don’t have any ideas about starting work on new larger imaging sensors.

3) APS-C lenses: Sony plans to make small size lenses too. And they also plan to make new APS-C lenses.

4) APS-C cameras:The APS-C market is very important for us, so we will create new models in the APS-C market, but we need to ask customers what kind of models they want.” And interesting: “APS-C cameras for professional use must exist.“.

5) Weathersealing: Sony is working to improve it.

6) Sony SD cards choice:Right now, processing speed is slower than SD UHS-II, so using SD is OK. But in the future, for example in any camera with 8K/30p video, SD won’t be enough.

7) About the Sony A7sIII:The next model should of course be more than they expect. So we’re planning a future S model right now, but it will take time.” Sony also knows that their customers want “4K/60p, 4:2:2 10-bit, and of course more battery power, increased AF accuracy – many things!

8) About the new Sony AI strategy:Currently we’re planning upgrades to existing models, and of course future models that will contain new AI features.

To sum up:
Sony confirmed our rumors about a professional APS-C camera are spot on!
Sony A7sIII will meet the requests of the customers and even “exceed” them
New APS-C lenses coming…hurray!
The new artificial features like “Animal Eye-AF” are going to be implemented on current cameras too.

This is a cool Sony A7000 rendering (not the real cam)

Share

An anonymous reader (Thanks!) sent me these nice renderings of the A7000:

Rendering of the A7000 based on multiple rumors.
Design may not be accurate because it was made entirely by my subjectivity.
Based on the design of the Sony A9, there is an upper LCD and a right mode dial and a left multi-purpose dial. There are two custom buttons at the top.

This camera looks seriously cool! I want it :)

Sigma 14mm F/1.8 DG HSM Art review by Marc Alhadeff

Share

Marc Alhadeff posted the review of the new Sigma 14mm F/1.8 DG HSM Art lens:

The Sigma 14mm F1.8 DG HSM Art (1600 euros) is an excellent lens optically for a wide angle with the fastest aperture available for that focal length.
Centre sharpness is excellent , and corners are already good wide open and become progressively excellent
The Sigma 14mm F1.8 is certainly the best 14mm available in the market in term of sharpness , bokeh and color rendition, and it low coma makes it suited for astrophotography
The F1.8 allows for some unique effect of background blur for a wide angle that has no equivalent
The only issue is the capricious Autofocus and the price tag (1600 euros), one of the most expensive of the Art line

First review of the new Voigtlander Color Skopar 21mm f/3.5 E-mount by Fred Miranda

Share

The new Voigtlander Color Skopar 21mm f/3.5 E-mount lens is in Stock at Amazon US (Click here).

Fred Miranda (Click here) is the first person testing the Voigtlander Color Skopar 21mm f/3.5 E-mount

Pros
Compact and light lens, ideal for hiking
Solid all-metal construction with tight manufacturing tolerance
Excellent resolution at all distances including MFD
Voigtlander signature color and contrast
Very good flare performance
Great coma performance wide open
Low distortion
10-blade straight aperture allows well-defined sunstars starting at f/4
Very low chromatic aberrations
Reasonably priced compared to the competition

Cons
Mounting and un-mounting is troublesome since the only non-rotating lens’ surface is very thin
Mid-zone not as great as center and corners at wide apertures. (f/3.5-5.6)
Pronounced vignetting that never truly goes away
Slight lower contrast/resolution compared to its main competitor (Loxia 21/2.8)

New Lightroom Photo Settings Migration
New AI-powered algorithms will give customers the ability to transfer Lightroom edited photos, keep the non-destructive settings, and move them into ON1 Photo RAW.

Portrait Module
The new Portrait module will automatically detect faces in your photo and will retouch to smooth skin, brighten and sharpen eyes, and whiten teeth.

Focus Stacking
Blend multiple photos at different focus distances to increase depth-of-field.

Auto-Align Layers
Easily combine multiple photos as layers, then automatically align them based on image content.

Text Tool
Perfect for creating posters, adding your byline or adding editing annotations. Easily control font size, color, position, and more, then save to a preset to add the same text overlay to a batch of photos quickly.

Master Keyword List
Now you can see every keyword that you use in a single, searchable list. You can quickly apply, clear, edit, or delete keywords.

Improved Local Adjustments
Local adjustments will be updated to use the raw processing data. This allows for more highlight and shadow details with more tonal range.

Layered HDR Workflow
With the powerful new non-destructive layers you can combine other photos, text, or alternate exposures with your HDR photos. You can even use the powerful masking tools to combine multiple HDR renditions.

Filter Options in Effects
We have added dedicated film grain, curves, and color adjustment filters to Effects. There’s also a new way to select and browse filters.

User Interface
Overall contrast has been reduced to make photos stand out along with a new font to help increase readability. New icons, tabs, and sliders will also take up less visual space.
