Zeiss Vicepresident: ” Full Frame is the future” and “Sony was surprised by E-mount success”

FDtimes published a PDF document containing an interview with Zeiss Vicepresident Winfried Scherle. Here are a couple of interesting tidbits:

1) Full Frame is the future:
I’m convinced that in the near future the relevant innovations and improvements will be made with Full Frame sensors. With the huge number of FF still picture cameras being sold, these sensors will be available for attractive prices. Canon started with the 5D MKII and was, according to my understanding, surprised that the community used the still camera for motion pictures. Sony has the a7RII and a7S which is dedicated for motion pictures. I’m convinced we’ll see more and more cine cameras with Full Format sensors.

2) About the lens strategy with Sony:
We have regular strategy meetings with Sony where we discuss roadmaps and so on but please understand that we can’t disclose further details.

3) About E-mount:
I think they were surprised about the success when they introduced the first mirrorless cameras in an environment that was dominated by DSLRs. So the E-mount market and mirrorless cameras have been a really disruptive technology. It started to be very popular in Japan but now it’s spreading around the world. And it’s getting even more relevant with the a7 series Full Format cameras. We are convinced that this will also drive the motion picture industry.

It’s very clear how Zeiss is focused on Full Frame E-mount lens development. I don’t think we will ever see a new [shoplink 41087 ebay]Zeiss Touit APSC lens[/shoplink] launch anymore!

Speculations on forums: Did Diglloyd post images shot with the new Loxia 21mm and Otus 28mm lens?

Loxia_21mm_28

I got many mails from readers and saw many discussions on forum about Diglloyd latest posts. In particular people are questioning about two posts:

  1. Post one (Click here). Diglloyd posted images shot on the A7rII with a unnamed 21mm lens. The File Info shows this is an E-mount 21mm f/2.8 lens. There is no such lens on the market yet and Diglloyd doesn’t say in that post what lens he used. So because people keep discussing about those images on the web I asked him what lens he used and he answered he used an adapted [shoplink 41039 ebay]ZF lens[/shoplink]. It’s up to SAR readers to believe him or not :) UPDATE: On a new post Diglloyd makes it clear those ar ZF lens shots.
  2. Post two (Click here). Diglloyd posted an A7rII image shot with what he called “unknownLens”. Again, on forum and other blogs people speculated this could be the first image shot on the new Otus 28mm f/1.4 lens.

Beside all that speculation I have been told by my sources the new Loxia FE lens design is based on the current [shoplink 9804 ebay]Biogon T* 2,8/21 ZM design (here on eBay)[/shoplink]. And announcement should be made someday next week!

And do not forget that one week after the Zeiss Loxia 21mm announcement also Sony will announce their 8 new FE lenses too! Stay tuned on SAR!

Recently I was asked by SAR to write a guest post. The photo that piqued their interest, was one of my nude images that I shot of a friend of mine here in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Alex is a well-known model, photographer, and graphic designer, and having known him for quite some time I felt comfortable enough asking him for an all nude shoot. After a short discussion where we both expressed our desire of wanting to do something different, we agreed on a date and time, and I arranged the location.
The decision to shoot a nude male came from only seeing everyday street- and documentary photography and wanting to do something that I had never done before, and as far as I know, no one was doing here, in Ho Chi Minh City in an artistic way.

The images can be seen here: Flickr page.

The location was a coffee shop owned by friends of mine (Fix Republic Coffee), which is frequented by artists, photographers, celebrities et cetera. A true artist’s hangout. I wanted to shoot on the first floor, because of the naturally diffused light that bounces off a nearby building and into the coffee shop window. I then decided to shoot Alex’s reflection in the large dirty mirror that was propped up against the opposite wall. I thought that it would be interesting for Alex to interact with himself in the mirror as if no one else was around, to help create a mood of sadness and loneliness which I was going for. I also brought a portable speaker along and played music by John Martyn to enhance this mood. Even when I work on commercial shoots we often play music, it helps the shoot.

These images are the first proper images I took with my Sony A7II, using the 55mm F/1.8 Zeiss lens. The second set of images, with the light blue background, are from another shoot with the same model, but in a studio setting. Those images are shot with the same 55mm F/1.8 at F/8, and are the sharpest images I have ever seen straight out of the camera. The clarity and detail are remarkable.

I made the switch from Canon to Sony on January 1, 2015, as a good way to start off the New Year with a new camera. I grew up shooting everything from disposable cameras to Nikon film and digital, then to Canon, and now Sony. It’s not because I’m chasing the next best thing, it’s more about the right tools for the right job. To be quite honest, it was partly a weight issue and the fact that I was never happy when I traded my Canon 5DII for the 5DIII.

I’ve also noticed a big difference in people’s reactions to the A7II when I’m out in the countryside shooting portraits et cetera. The A7 series cameras are far less intrusive than big bulky DSLRs, and I feel that people feel less threatened or intimidated by the Sony, as it’s a more traditional film body style camera. I’m inspired again after making the switch, and it has made me love photography all over again.
