Canon’s new 70D has Dual Pixel AF sensor. Challenges Sony next generation sensor.

Share

As you know Sony will get rid of the SLT tech on all future A-mount cameras. And that will be possible thanks to a new generation of Sony sensors with much improved Phase Detection system. But it looks like the whole world is now moving towards on Sensor Phase Detection autofocus. Today Canon announced their new 70D camera (specs and price at Amazon) having a Dual Pixel AF sensor. On paper this sounds like an incredible piece of tech. Basically every pixel on sensor can fulfill two tasks: Capture the light information for the actual image and be used at the same time to elaborate the phase detection signal. The main advantage of the tech is that you don’t have pixels that get waste for doing one job only. I am curious to see if Sony will have a similar solution or go a completely different route. One thing is sure, on sensor PDAF is what we will see on most future DSLR or Mirrorless cameras.

(SR3) Surprise: Sony may hint some A-mount news in autumn?

Share

While rumors from trusted sources pointed out that the new A-mount mirrorless cameras (both FF and APS-C!) will hit the worldwide stores in very early 2014 I am now getting some interesting rumors about the announcement date. One source (and second anonymous source) told me that Sony will officially announce the new A-mount cameras in a couple of months already! I don’t know yet if Sony will actually show camera prototypes or just introduce their new A-mount mirrorless philosophy or the real final cameras. I hope the sources reading this can send me some clarification about that.

Overall there is a terrific exciting time ahead of us. New NEX-7 successor and NEX lenses (including fast zoom and 85mm f/1.4 lens). New A-mount mirrorless FF and APS-C cameras and FF lenses. I also got hints about some NEX-FF news. I am working almost any day to spill out as much as I can from all my sources :) I don’t think you will have to wait much to see first camera specs! Stay tuned!

(SR4) A77 successor coming very early 2014!

Share

I got a confirmation  from a highly trusted sources that Sony set the release date for the A77 successor. It’s going to be released in early 2014. The source also confirmed that this will be a full mirrorless A-mount camera (no SLT tech). I am working on the specs right now and hope I can get confirmation from other sources too soon. I have been told it has a slightly new design too (still DSLR alike).

P.S.: The A77 will be announced along a Full Frame A-mount cameras (also mirrorless).

First images from the new Sony i1 smartphone Cyberhsot. Uses same RX100MII Exmor R sensor tech!

Share

Xperiablog (found via Thenewcamera) posted what they claim to be a real image of the new Sony i1 smartphone. The i1 will be the first smartphone that can shoot pictures as good as Sony Cybershot compact cameras. Sadly Xperiablog doens’t have an image of the back of the camera to see the lens.

But I have a good news too:
One of my sources sent me the specs of the camera (Thanks a lot!). He says the i1 phone (Honami) will have a selectable ISO range from 50-12,800 and it uses Super Steady Shot image stabilisation (2-3 stops). It also has an f/2.0 28mm equivalent lens. The sensor is a 20MP 2/3″ BSI Exmor R one using the same process as as the RX100mkII for superior low light performance. The phone will also have manual controls for shutter speed and some level of manual aperture control and it will have an all new Cyber-shot app which integrates with PlayMemories Online.

May the source can tell me when Sony will announce the i1? Thanks :)

P.S.: The sensor size is the same used by the Fuji X20. A comparison with the RX100-NIkon1 sensor size can be seen here at Cameraimagesensor.
