Sony interview: New APS-C cameras and new affordable lenses are on our roadmap

Share

Phototrend interviewed Yu Takae, Senior Manager in charge of ILC product planning – interchangeable lens bodies – at Sony Corp. A couple of highlights:

About the APS-C strategy:

We believe that APS-C cameras can meet different needs than full-frame cameras, thanks to their compact size. Sony will therefore continue to rise to the challenge of creating attractive products not only for creating videos, but also for photographers.

About sports cameras future (Sony A1 and Sony A9II):

Our strategy for professional sports photographers is clear: we will continue to listen to professionals in the field and exceed their expectations.

On Sony lens roadmap:

I cannot predict exactly when and what type of lenses will be released, but we would like to offer more affordable lenses in the future.

On lens designs:

we are prioritizing significant reduction in size and weight to improve usability in more situations.

About the RX1 Full Frame series future:

Unfortunately, I am unable to tell you about the RX series. We can’t pronounce on the future in terms of future product planning, but we are always listening to consumers and will deliver what they want.

Sony 20-70mm Review by Photographyblog: “excellent”

Share

Sony 20-70mm at BHphoto, Amazon, Adorama, FocusCamera, FotoKoch, Fotoerhardt, Calumet, WexUK.

Photographyblog tested the new Sony lens and concluded:

We can still remember the days when a 24-70mm lens was considered to be daringly wide in comparison with the usual 28-70mm models, so it’s perhaps no surprise to see the debut of a standard zoom that starts at 20mm in the form of the new Sony FE 20-70mm F4 G.

It may not look like much to the casual observer, but that extra 4mm makes a big difference in practice, so much so that it could remove the need to also carry an ultra-wide angle zoom for some users.

What’s more, there’s no loss of image quality by going from 24mm to 20mm with this lens – the optical performance only really drops off at the longer 70mm end of the range where it’s not quite so sharp wide open as at all the other focal lengths.

It produces some nice bokeh effects thanks to the 9-blade iris diaphragm, vignetting is not too obvious and chromatic aberrations are almost non-existent. Even the close-up performance is great, especially at the telephoto end, which adds even more to the lens’ versatility.

Auto-focusing proved to be satisfyingly quick on the Sony Alpha A7R IV that we tested the lens with, and it offers a near silent experience that will suit movie shooters and candid street photographers alike.

Build quality is very good, despite the lightweight hybrid plastic and metal design, and this lens is also very usefully weather-proof thanks to seals around all the buttons and switches and a rubber gasket around the lens mount.

The aperture ring is a very welcome inclusion, especially as it can be de-clicked for video and also locked into place. With two focus hold buttons and an AF/MF switch, this is a well featured lens indeed. Sony have also included a decent lens hood and a good quality soft case in the overall package.

Sony and the other third-party lens manufactures offer a bewildering choice of standard zoom lenses, but none of them extend as wide as 20mm, with the exception of the Tamron 20-40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD which offers a much shorter telephoto reach.

If you’ve always wanted a standard zoom lens which offers a uniquely wider angle of view that’s perfect for both landscapes and vlogging, then you need look no further than the excellent new Sony FE 20-70mm F4 G.

First wild Sony A7sIV rumors: It will have the highest dynamic range on any alpha camera?

Share

Note: This is a WILD rumor about the A7sIV that I got from a new source. Trusted sources have NOT told me yet if the A7sIV will be coming in 2023. So for the sake of clickbait, sorry “rationale discussion” let me know if you would be happy if that rumor would turn out to be true:

  • A7sIV will be announced in Q3/Q4 2023
  • 6k sensor that offers raw video and oversampled 4k video with no crops
  • The highest dynamic range ever on any alpha camera

If the rumor is correct (big if!) the surprise here is that the A7sIV would not record 8K. Of course, being this aimed at professionals we have to admit that 8K isn’t yet mainstream anyway. So it might be a wise choice from Sony to focus on delivering the best 4k quality possible.

Sony to Release SPAD Depth Sensor for Smartphones with the Industry’s Highest Photon Detection Efficiency

Share

Sony just issued the following press text for the release of their new SPAD sensor. Not sure this sensor tech might be used on future APS-C and FF designs too. But surely this innovation sounds exciting:

Sony Semiconductor Solutions to Release SPAD Depth Sensor for Smartphones with
High-Accuracy, Low-Power Distance Measurement Performance, Powered
by the Industry’s Highest*1 Photon Detection Efficiency

Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation

Atsugi, Japan — Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation (SSS) today announced the upcoming release of the IMX611, a direct time-of-flight (dToF) SPAD depth sensor for smartphones that delivers the industry’s highest*1 photon detection efficiency.

The IMX611 has a photon detection efficiency of 28%, the highest in the industry,*1 thanks to its proprietary single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) pixel structure.*2 This reduces the power consumption of the entire system while enabling high-accuracy measurement of the distance of an object.

This new sensor will generate opportunities to create new value in smartphones, including functions and applications that utilize distance information.

*1 Among SPAD depth sensors for smartphones. As of this announcement on March 6, 2023.
*2 A pixel structure that uses avalanche multiplication to amplify electrons from a single incident photon, causing a cascade like an avalanche.
