Just recently BCNranking reported a 50% drop in camera sales on the Japanese market. Well it got even worse in the USA:
Retail intelligence firm Stackline analyzed ecommerce sales across the U.S. and compiled a list of the fastest growing and declining ecommerce categories (March 2020 vs. March 2019). Camera sales dropped by 64%!!!

It was bad enough to see the Panasonic S1H beating the A7sII in terms of specs. But today we learned more about the new Canon EOS-R5 too and yes Sony can’t wait a day longer to at least start teasing something about the new A7s camera!

Exactly a year ago Sony announced a joint partnership with the Light company. And finally we are getting an idea of Sony’s plan with that new tech:
I just spotted this newly published Sony patent disclosing the design of a future E-mount Light Field Lens! The patent shows how you mount the lens on the Sony A7 to create multiple images on the sensor. Those images will than be combined to created a Light Field image.
A Light field image gives you completely depth of field control. And you can select what has to be in focus AFTER you have taken the image. The drawback is that you need a lot of fine tuned computational power to get rid of possible artifacts.
For now we know this is just a patent. We will see if Sony management will give this idea a green light in the near future…

Whether the photographer sees this as an unusually long standard lens or as a slightly shorter portrait lens, the 75mm length proves in use to be very equitable. We can approach our portrait subjects quite closely, but not so close as to cause distortion of the features. On the other hand, as a general-purpose lens there is some merit in having a longer focal length and having more space in which to work. In a similar way, 100mm macro lenses tend to be more popular than 50mm ones.
As for performance, this is just exemplary, the Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 FE is an outstanding lens indeed. Along with a moderate, realistic price tag, compact size and great handling, the only caveat is the lack of sealing against water and dust. This still leaves us with a superb lens and an obvious Editor’s Choice.
