2 years ago |I seem to notice less CA than before…looking good so far, also at f/2.8. That said, I haven’t downloaded any of them yet. Wish they had shot the same image at f/2.8, f/4 and f/8…

To me it looks like quite the same, but that’s really hard to see differences with different subjects & lights. They should (dp) post review very soon.
One thing : Looking at Exifs, boths (old and new) seems to be the same NEX-5, at least same firmware : 1.0
I have see on some other Nex-5 pictures : firmware 1.03…

2 years ago |I’m very unimpressed too, even the 18-55 sam looks better than this, this NEX lens screams gimmick IMO, there is a reason why 16mm f2.8 for DSLR full frame costs what it costs, and it’s certainly not only because of the bigger size.

That’s bothersome.

2 years ago |When trim the picture down to about 12 megapixels and neglect the 4 corners, I think it is still acceptable. wish they have better lens or software rectification to overcome the Chromatic Aberration and distortion.

2 years ago |Short flange distance made the focus to sensitive, I think
We need extreme care to confirm the focus…
I have saw the one of fruit store, it is soft. But strangely it is sharp at the edge…ouch…

Sorry, I wasn’t clear : I’m wondering what have been the changes on the body firmware from 1.0 to 1.03. Just curiousity that will (probably) never be fill.

2 years ago |I think the pics look good. And then I read everyone freaking out on dp review like they’re horrible. I think it’s gonna be a great lens/camera. My only disappointment is that the video is crap. Sony crippled the video to a ridiculous extent so that the user has almost no control over it. Not acceptable.

2 years ago |@JT – Why are firmware upgrades bothersome? The reviews I read said that the camera is very slow to start-up, scrolling through video’s is slow and the UI could use some work. Firmware upgrades are made to address those types of issues and I’m HOPING that there are more firmware upgrades before the camera is released so we don’t have to deal with all those annoyances. In my opinion, firmware upgrades are a GOOD thing.

About speed, switch it on and press shutter right after… you will see, it’s less than 2 sec ! Just have to left it to auto mode when power off before.

2 years ago |The firmware upgrades are not bothersome. I’m all for them. But, upgrades can have an effect on image quality. If DP Review is using old firmware for their tests that can be problematic if the firmware effected the IQ. That is what is bothersome. I’ve got a feeling that DP Review is going to slam this lens. For me and most of the pictures I’ve seen from it the lens is perfectly acceptable. If I bought the Nex this would be the lens for me. But my problem is the Nex is the crippled video. Also, I’m interested time lapse which would limit me to the Nex 5 (the only one that can use a remote control). But I’ve read that the lcd screen has to be turned on to take pictures- which limits battery life. Now I’m not sure if it’s true but it would make sense if it is- which is another reason for me to not get the Nex. But I think for people with no interest in video it’ll be a great camera. It has a lot going for it. A whole lot.

2 years ago |My opinion about firmware upgrades/versions is this: I think dpreview should review the new lens with the same camera and same firmware that they used for the initial review. That’s because if Sony implements in a new firmware version some software post processing to minimize the low picture quality obtained with these lens, then we would not have an objective review of the lens and we would not see if there was an improvement in the build of the lens or the improvement in picture quality it’s done by software only. And I think that the video mode is good enough for people used with compact point’n'shoot cameras (myself included).
