Full Sony NEX-5n test at DPreview! Gold Award!!!

For the very first time a mirrorless camera earned the “Gold Award” at Dpreview! Go here to read the super detailed NEX-5n review: http://dpreview.com/reviews/sonynex5n/.
In short: “The 16.1MP sensor in the 5N is capable of capturing images that rival some of the best APS-C format DSLRs on the market, and up to ISO 6400 image quality is impressive. Even at ISO 12,800, image quality is far ahead of most of the NEX’s Micro Four Thirds competitors.”
Sony really made a nice work with the NEX-5n and if it wouldn’t for the “Click” issue I guess they would have sold far more cameras than they did. But as you know, the issue will be fixed by Sony service and I hoe the new Stocks of the cameras will already come in perfect conditions. Let’s praise Sony for doing such an amazing camera. If you look at what Nikon did we should be very happy to have the NEX-5n

REVENGE
8 months ago |Well deserved, now show me the lenses.

8 months ago |“What’s really missing now is lenses lenses and lenses!” I heartily agree! We not only need more quality lenses, both the (much too expensive) Zeiss but also some high quality Sony ones too.
Sony needs to be quicker at bringing equipment to the market; so my appeal to Sony is no more drip drip but pour it all out quickly. Floopd us with Sony NEX and Sony Alpha equipment and you can wash Canon and Nikon away!
ELK
8 months ago |it really is a nice camera for the price, at least on paper. Would gladly buy it as a backup for my DSLR. Can anyone please advise some quality lenses, no matter if autofocus or not, just only not too big, so that I could keep the overall size reasonably small? Thanks
Don Cox
8 months ago |The best range of small manual focus lenses are those designed for Leica cameras. But they are expensive, even used.
Kevin
8 months ago |The contax g series are very good lenses via adapter

8 months ago |No µFT-User will ever deny that the Nex-5n is a wonderful camera.
The only point pro µFT are the lenses, and at least for me that is a big point.
So, Sony, please stop building bodys now and catch up in the lens lineup.
Miroslav
8 months ago |Unfortunately, we m4/3 users can say the opposite – it has to catch up in the body lineup ( Olympus especially ).

8 months ago |But people have complained for over a year now about lack of lenses yet they seem to do nothing at all about it! It’s absolutely rubbish. It’s te very reason they won’t take over the camera Market, can’t just do half a job Sony (bodies only)
Frustrating management…
lorenzino
8 months ago |This is so true!
The Sony E system would be a no brainer… if it existed! If small lenses are possible for mirrored cameras (see Pentax very nice collapsible lenses) how come they are not possible for the E system?
Are we condemned to use other camera`s lenses with no AF?
And yes, as you said, everyone here and elsewhere has been complaining about this for ages, while Panoly were producing many interesting lenses almost from the beginning (i.e. panny 20 mm, 7-14, ecc.)
I mean… there are magnificent sensors, now… how can we use them?

8 months ago |Its interesting how there are all these people moaning about the lack of lenses on the NEX system, yet there are websites showing NEXs with leicas lenses, voightlander, nikon, minolta you name it. Ok if you absolutely need AF then you’re limited, but other than that theres tons of superb lenses to chose from. The E-mount standard is an open standard meaning that anyone can produce lenses or adaptors for it. The following companies apparently produce lenses for the NEX system
* Carl Zeiss AG
* Cosina Co., Ltd.
* Samyang Optics
* Sigma Corporation
* Tamron Co., Ltd.
* SLR Magic
and using adaptors lenses in the following mounts can be used
* Alpa mount
* Sony A-mount (Sony LA-EA1, LA-EA2 and 3rd part adapters with aperture ring)
* C-mount
* Canon EF and Canon EF-S
* Canon FD-mount
* Contax G
* Contarex
* Contax/Yashica bayonet (adapter variant with tilt available)
* Exakta lens mount
* Fujica X bayonet
* Hasselblad Xpan
* Konica
* Leica M-mount (bayonet)
* Leica M39 lens mount (LTM/L39) (screw)
* Leica R-mount (adapter variant with tilt available)
* M42-mount (screw) (adapter variant with tilt available)
* Micro Four Thirds
* Minolta SR-mount
* Minolta/Konica Minolta A-mount (Minolta/Konica Minolta AF/Alpha/Dynax/Maxxum and Sony Alpha DSLRs) (Sony LA-EA1, LA-EA2 and 3rd party adapters with aperture ring)
* Nikon F-mount (adapter variant with aperture ring for G lenses available, adapter variant with tilt available)
* Olympus OM-mount
* Olympus Pen F
* Pentax K-mount (adapter variant with aperture ring for DA lenses available)
* Rollei-mount
* T2-mount (screw)
just how many lenses do you actually need?????
Petter J.
8 months ago |Actually, only CZ has currrently produced any lenses, and that’s based on an order from Sony. The others are likely to produce lenses, but haven’t announced anything.
I don’t count SLR Magic, as that’s basically rebranded security camera lenses, with no AF, no electronic connection, and bad quality. Proper MF lenses are a better choice
Chris Lewis
8 months ago |Monkeyfacemcbride, I see you’ve missed the point. It’s not how many lenses one can fit to a NEX with an adapter or a bit of bluetack and a piece of sellotape!
It’s all about Sony being incredibly slow at rolling out a system.
It happened with the Alpha range and now with the NEX range too.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m probably Sony’s biggest fan, but equally I’m frustrated that they seem to do something really good but ration the lenses and other goodies. I’m sure there are a whole pile of “good” reasons for this, but I wish they could give us more toys to play with!
I don’t think that the possibility of using a NEX body with Leica lens (for instance) occurred to Sony when they initially planned the NEX camera and the success of NEX amongst serious photographers has (I think) come as a surprise to them, however I don’t think any camera manufacturer is truly happy with someone else’s lenses being mated with their cameras as apart from anything else, it makes a (negative) comment on the Sony offering. Noted that a Sony executive has been seen with a NEX fitted with a Voigtlander lens, but I’m pretty sure that it wasn’t wholly approved of by those in charge!
The huge pile of adapters available for the NEX is a happy accident, but not a reason for Sony to slacken off the release of lenses. In my opinion, they should release all the lenses on their roadmap today for purchase tomorrow and plan a fresh batch for 2012, but that’s just my opinion.

8 months ago |The point I got was sonys, they intentionally created an “open” mount to allow extensive third party support using future and existing lenses. This reduces your reliance on Sony to provide them, indeed, if Sony disappeared of the face of the earth tomorrow, you would still get lens support. As it stands there are a multitude of lenses which can be used with this system, yes they require adaptors to compensate for the differing flange distances but thats a small price to pay to be able to use Leica lenses. Additionally, Sony would argue that they also provide adaptors for the whole A-mount range with AF (PDAF if you want) all 350..odd of ‘em. So the actual point of these people isn’t a lack of lenses, its that they have to buy adaptors…thats a bit different.
lorenzino
8 months ago |Well, as if adaptors magically fixed all problems.
Seen this way, camera makers just had to create new bodies, from now on, as lenses do already exist in large quantities.
But FYI not everybody here takes pics of flowers or landscapes. If you take pics of moving people you will probably fancy AF, for example. And there are situations when it is just nice to use an automated lens, especially if it is a zoom.
Sony mirrorless system promises smaller lenses than normal Aps ones. So: show us some good but small lenses that take advantage of the size of the camera and quality of the sensor.
Not mentioning the fact that adaptors add bulk, and changing lenses with adaptors mounted on them is more complicated than changing normal lenses, adding dead time in situations when a photographer may want to be as quick as possible. As I said: not everybody takes pics of landscapes and flowers.
All in all: a camera needs a dedicated system, or otherwise better be to produce camera bodies with already existing mounts (i.e. Nikon F, Canon, etc.)

you’re joking right?
well, by that line of thought, if you need metering you’re limited.

that’s the limit of ambiguity of sentences..

8 months ago |+1 The SLR Magic 28mm pancake is a pretty cool lens. Good walk around lens and good bokeh. What happened to the Sigma and Tamron lenses?
Slazo
8 months ago |Are you guys kidding me. Sony does not have a gazillion population of engineers at work. If you count the number of camera models released in the last one and a half year, no rival can even compare with Sony. Two whole new systems in NEX and SLT!! 4 lenses up already for emount. A77, Nex 7 and Nex 5n within a month of each other. Stop beating the bush around Pan and Oly lenses, they have not done anything significant with the camera in past 2 years, so yes they can focus on lenses. It seems like their last straw to be honest :p – hold on tight fellas !! And lest we forget, they must b closing in on the final stages of A99/A?? full frame. Grow up people and be patient :p

8 months ago |I AM SO PROUD OF THE NEX 5N!!!
And so happy I don’t shoot that crappy small-sensor m4/3 no more.
HOOORAY FOR THE 5N!
mhhhh, gold award… the m4/3 fanboys gang can only dream now :>
(and I used to love my EP1 soooo much:)

8 months ago |Did they make it too good for such price
? This may kill some other Sony camera sales, but who cares – the customer wins here.

8 months ago |I think the problem with the NEX series is the lack of PANCAKE lenses… Otherwise there are easily over hundreds of lenses to choose from.

8 months ago |Gratulations to Sony, the Nex finally got what it deserved
for me the Nex 5 allready was a gold award cam.people allways complain, but Sony did all the right things with it.the masses dont buy a lens collection,they buy a kit with 1 or 2 lenses and thats it.. even pros dont buy new lenses all the time, but bodies are upgraded frequently,thats where the money is
so i guess its a healthy strategy.
Besides that the Nexes are simply great cams and Sony supported them far better then i suspected, mine is now at the 4th Firmware generation which added tons of features over the original.
I think its good dpreview did not fall into the whining of many about the clicking “issue”, first of all its a stills cam, second its only happening when you ruin your video with spastic movement anyways.. admitedly its a tech flaw that shouldnt be there and surely will be gone soon.
Bottom line: well deserved Sony! Keep on doing the right things and learn from success

8 months ago |I’d celebrate the award by taking some pictures with my 5N, but it’s still in Laredo getting declicked. That being said, the 5N really is an outstanding tool. Sony has to be commended for admitting its manufacturing mistake so readily and finding a fix for it quickly. Yes, the flaw has impacted 5N sales, but hopefully the award and the fix will result in more interest and sales for what really is one of the best cameras introduced this last year. Now, bring out the lenses (and the NEX-7)!

8 months ago |I just sold my NEX-5 and purchased an NEX-5N. While I’m quite impressed with the camera, i have a question for those of you who have the camera… On the original 5, i would hear a sound when i turned the camera off. I believe that was the camera shaking any dust off the sensor. I don’t hear or even feel any vibration when i turn off my 5N. I looked through the menus for the option to turn the anti-dust system on, but failed to find it.
Is my NEX-5N messed up, or is the anti-dust system gone (or is it really, REALLY silent)?
Thanks!
Patrik
8 months ago |Hi.
When I start my 5n I hear a sound immediately.
When I turn it off, the same sound hears after aprox 4 sec.

8 months ago |I’m not terribly impressed by this review and I haven’t even finished reading it, from them:
‘Since this is a DT lens, this lens is usable only on camera bodies with APS-C sized sensors. Consequently, it’s more compact than lenses with the same zoom range that can also be used on ‘full frame’ (36 x 24 mm) cameras.’
Which lenses exactly are they comparing to here?
Matt
8 months ago |And this:
‘The lack of built-in stabilisation is largely irrelevant since all Sony cameras that can use this lens contain the company’s proprietary SteadyShot INSIDE sensor-shift image stabilisation mechanism.’
So the NEX3, NEX5, NEX-C3, NEX-5N, NEX-7, NEX-VG10, NEX-VG20 and FS100 all suddenly have SteadyShot?
Not to mention the Dynax 5, 7 and 9 – Do they have SteadyShot INSIDE?

so im just going to wait a whole year… but i still need a camera since i sold all my nikon gear… then i looked into the nex7 and was planning to just get that. after i did alot more research i notice that the nex5n has insane iso capability! and i was very surprised how well i did against cameras thats 2-3x more expensive. so i decided to the the nex5n ^__^! cant wait! coming tomorrow also =)!

8 months ago |I do not understand how a camera can get the gold award when so many people complain about the lenses that it does have, the 18-55 kit lenses.
Untill now I have not seen a wow picture from the nex cameras ( I am not talking about nex a77 ).
