9 months ago |Watch this. Sony has already put out the latest firmware to the reviewers. You can expect the new images by next week.

Looks like we will not have to wait much longer.

9 months ago |A77 iso 6400 sucks compared to the D7000. I don’t believe that Sony engineers didn’t compare their de-noise filter with the Nikon one.

9 months ago |Considering the high ISO jpeg performance of the NEX-5N, your conclusion isn’t particularly valid…
Kalpurush :)
9 months ago |@ Gabriele
What you believe is up to you! There are other things to consider to take photos in low light, ISO is one of the factors but not the only one.

The reason for the exceptionally good noise performance of the D7000 is mostly due to the architecture and on chip A/D conversion of the Sony 16mp sensor (also used in the K5, A580, NEX C3 & 5N). Since Sony used the same sensor architecture in the new 24mp sensor in the A77 & Nex 7 it should perform very well for a 24mp APS-C size sensor. You think the engineers from some other company can do better?
If Sony have got something like the noise performance of their 24mp full frame sensor on this 24mp APS-C sensor – which has less than half the area of a full frame sensor – that is quite a feat of engineering.
It may be even better than that.

9 months ago |Is SLRclub saying that imaging-resource’s test is biased or what?
Can someone summarize it? o.o
Raghav
9 months ago |Exactly! I can’t make anything out of that translation. It sounds like gibberish…
Dave Cox
9 months ago |I don’t think any hard and/or fast conclusions can be drawn from this. At ISO6400 it seems that the A55 is better than the A77. Hardly likely is it?
The ISO6400 concert pics look great at full size, even in JPEG.

9 months ago |Where did you see the pics in full size?
Dave Cox
9 months ago |If you click on the images they open larger in another window. I’m not sure if they are absolutely full size but they seem to be. I didn’t look at the number of pixels, apologies.
Dennis
9 months ago |All I get when clicking on the pictures is a 1600×1067 version. Difficult to judge the IQ from a picture that was reduced in size by factor 14… ISO 6400 looks to me like it shouldn’t be printed bigger than 15x10cm (6″x4″).

9 months ago |As I said, apologies. I was looking on a 7 inch screen!!

9 months ago |Here are some test photos on the Hungarian site pixinfo.com made with the A77:
http://pixinfo.com/fgep/Sony_Alpha_SLT-A77/tesztfotok/01_18mm_ISO100_oa
According to the exif data, it seems that the camera had firmware version 1.0
David
9 months ago |1.0 doesn’t mean launch version firmware either
Michael
9 months ago |Remember that the A33 and A55 were released with firmware 1.10…

9 months ago |I would like to see a site compare noise, sharpness, etc. using the same lens across different bodies. For example, the sigma 50mm f2.8 macro lenses is available for Sony, Pentax, Nikon and Canon mounts.

9 months ago |have to say that i am very disappointed about the new A77. Sounds to me that it is a weak competitor to the upcoming 7d2 and d7000! Stop using weak burst rate functions and face detection to attract the new buyers!
Give us a real reason not to look for the canon or nikon up-comers!
And when they make a translucent system with light loss, for goods sake, used money on ISO and noise reduction in stead of i 16-50 2.8 lens. Its like they gave up the noise problem, and made a cheap 2.8 lens instead!
help me out im stuck on the Sony noise road!
Ben
9 months ago |I would not discount anything Sony is doing to attract new buyers, as expanding the customer base is crucial to the long-term viability of Sony’s imaging division.

9 months ago |The A77 is not convaiquant but rather disapointing in high ISO !
at
9 months ago |After looking at some video samples of NEX-5n and A77, I am pity disappointed about its quality with overblown highlights in bright area, while the contrast is over-enhanced. I think it is a good still camera but does not impress me yet without seeing any advantage from 60p recording. Good ISO performance is great, but still cannot compete with Panasonic GH2 video performance at low ISO yet. Hope new firmware can compensate for its weakness.
David
9 months ago |Blame the photographer for that. Incorrect metering isn’t the fault of the camera. People should use exposure compensation if they aren’t in M mode.
at
9 months ago |I am not talking about the metering problem, because we don’t see the camera overexposed when shooting still picture. It seems the video processing engine cannot adjust dynamically when shooting scenes at the same time. Cameraman will usually concentrate on picture composition and manual focusing when shooting video after camera alignment. Auto iris is more common in the video world.

9 months ago |again sony can’t resolved noise, that really dispointed if the new firmware can’t fix it

9 months ago |Who needs 24MP ? I think it’s a big mistake for Sony.
SRL
9 months ago |As a still image photographer, high MP’s makes my life easer as I can extend the reach of a high quality lens without loss.
I can use my smaller and lighter CZ135/f1.8 ZA for shots most others are grabbing a big 70-200 to get. The 24MP’s of my a850 and the sharpness and speed of my CZ allow me to crop the heck out of a photo and still get a great 8×10 or larger shot.
I’m sold on high MP sensors because of the reach I get without pulling-out the “big Iron” and bring all of the unwanted attention from the street to my gear.
Ben
9 months ago |I use that same combo (a900 + 135/f1.8) for precisely the same reason. Provided your subject is in focus, with the quality of that lens and the 24MP sensor gives so much latitude for cropping tighter.
ageha
9 months ago |I do.
It’s comfortable for cropping.

9 months ago |NO comparisons can be made until a scientific test is done with the cameras on production standard firmwares, side by side. Sensor noise is massivly variable and I have personally shot at 3200 on my a700 and sold the shots, other times I have been left with a blobby mess. To take a ‘good’ example from a camera already noted for its exceptional noise handling and compare it with a quick test shot from a beta/pre production firmware/camera is very unrealistic.
In any case, its more important to me how much better the A77 performs over my current A700, where the N/C/S/O and so on all have their strengths, to expect the next sony model to excel in all areas over all competitors is just silly.

9 months ago |The solution to all the ISO problems seems very clear: use a proven method! Call this camera the 77x and bring on a 77s with the trusty 16MP sensor. Leave everything else the same (because there is quite a lot new stuff that’s really good about the 77), so you will get a 18 Fps or 1,5 sec burst with the s model and a lot better ISO results. Not a lot of engineering needed (all the stuff is there already) and I think sales will rocket because people can choose what they want (more MP or better IQ)!
Should be possible in 2 months tops.. Oh and since the sensor is cheaper they could even lower the price.
But guess what: I would buy that one even without that!

9 months ago |I think is really pointless to rush into any deep conclusion about the NEX-7/SLT A65/A77 without the final product in hands. The way some people are dragging this debate – teen-like overreaction – is getting really annoying. Just fuckin wait for real final product reviews! You cannot conclude anything right now, even final products can change significantly after a firmware update so let’s just wait like non-stupid people. Or not, do whatever you want.
Renato M.
9 months ago |About the video, it’s pretty shaky, isn’t it? I know there is a lot of tele there, but the shakeness makes it looks amateur. But I’m not saying that all in a bad way since I don’t know the circunstances of the video, if it was just a test, etc.
ahhh-lpha100
9 months ago |“I think is really pointless to rush into any deep conclusion without the final product in hands”. Guess that includes video?
No offence intended! People that complain are still potential customers. The problem will be the ones you do not hear anything from anymore. They may either be happy, or, more likely (?), gone forever.
Renato M.
9 months ago |Yes, it includes video, but I didn’t comment on the video quality, it was more about the way it was shot. But it’s also complicated because Sony made a big push towards video but the lack of lenses that are video-friendly is a let down. But I wanted to know better about the image stabilization.
I don’t know about that since this is a rumor website.
My point was that they won’t be able to buy until October/November anyway and the same people have been saying and debating the same thing over different threads ever since the first ISO comparison came out over and over again.
At first it was a valid debate and I was ok even with those rushing into conclusion like the world was collapsing, but right now it’s just so repetitive that it’s annoying. The best we can do is wait – when we talk about this ISO thing. Let’s waint until some serious photography website post a full review.

9 months ago |In DSLR Magazine they say Sony told them those cameras were production samples.
Just over the image of dawn with the link to sample crops, literally could be translated as “They pointed us the cameras were final units”, that in spanish is clearly understood as production cameras.
So it seems fair to asume that all cameras in Greece showing “v1.0″ in the EXIF data, are production samples.
Saludos!
Michael
9 months ago |Again, that version number says nothing. The A33 and A55 were previewed with version 1.0 firmware, but released with version 1.10.
Mato34
9 months ago |But what about that “We were told these are production samples”? If Sony tell the press so and the cameras show v1.0 in the EXIF, what would be your conclusion?
Yes, Sony could improve firmware before releasing the A77, but it could be only small changes and details not directly related with IQ, like any other update for any other camera. Perhaps the lens database with data for more lenses.
But Sony let Imaging-Resource, dpreview, and other sites publish a lot of pictures, and now says in Greece that those were final cameras and also let the press to take a lot of photos with it and publish it. Why should we think Sony has a significant improvement in IQ saved for when the cameras reach the market?
Of course I know sure nothing, but at the moment I can’t see a sign pointing in that direction.
Saludos.
