9 months ago |Weird that so many people find this camera so ugly and cheap looking. From those shots, the body materials looks on par with NEX7 to me…
And this mode dial looks like… well a mode dial. I think a not so stylish mode dial is better than no mode dial at all…
Also, first rumors were stating that NEX6 EVF was lower res than NEX7 one.
But latest rumors state same res + highter contrast. So NEX6 EVF should ends up better.
And NEX6 screen is definitely a touch screen.
All in all, NEX7 still has its third dial and its larger sensor. Both “advantages” compensated by the touch screen and the (supposed) better light sensibility.
I really think NEX6 will be a far better choice over NEX7… it should even be (slightly) cheaper … why complain ?

9 months ago |The next few weeks will be good reading.
The NEX 6, is out next week, the fuji X-E1 is out and then week have the Nex 7, I guess the difference will be the focus speed, and how user friendly they are?

9 months ago |The Nex 7 looks like a camera from the next century against this one. I just cannot believe that this will be the final design, I think it is maybe just a prototype. It would be Sonys biggest design fails of the last years at least imho!
Mark
9 months ago |I thought so.
So I am a little confused as to why they are putting that hot shoe on?
I understand that you can now put mics and led lights on the hot shoe, but now there are no flashes that work in TTL?
Although, sony are making a flash that will TTL, that comes out with the A99.
Anyway, I probably won’t be able to use it for work, but it will be a good travel camera and weekend camera.
I’m enjoying the RX100, only had it for a couple of days, I’m sure the NEX 6 will be great.
Aaron
9 months ago |Don’t get me wrong. Having a PASM dial need not spoit the design like this.
The existing on/off switch which can be replaced by PASM switch without changing the design. A on/off push button can replace this ugly dial, so, it looks exactly the 5R design!
Almazar80
9 months ago |It’s hard to imagine that your Canon EX550 flash will work with the NEX-6 – except maybe in manual mode.

9 months ago |I just bought a RX100 for my wife, it is a great little camera, but I want the NEX-6 for me, when will it be available?
Still confused about the hot shoot, can it fire my canon ex 550, with TTL?

9 months ago |Are you bitchin about the physical mode dial or the fact that there are aperture, shutter, etc. modes on cameras?
Majority of people who buy a camera will not use the manual mode, or use it only sparingly but many want the IQ of DSLRs or mirrorless. Most will use Auto, P, A or S mode. Why else Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony (Alpha), Olympus, Panasonic, etc. make cameras with a mode dial?
I know a bit about photography and like using my OM-1, but most of the time I would rather use my contemporary cameras while at A or S mode. I also got some bright, sharp primes, but don’t mind using my 10x zoom outside during sunny days. What’s wrong with that?

I, like others, am glad there’s finally a mode dial on a NEX.

9 months ago |ISO hotshoe is ideal for A99, for some Photog which always shoot photo at the studio and using studio Flash and other equif. It’s a good news….
But I don’t think any PRO for NEX-6 to having a ISO hotshoe…… I think it’s a CON also…

9 months ago |I’m previously an wedding photographer, now taking photos as hobby. My focus is always on taking good pictures, not so much on the looks of the camera, functionality is my first priority. Besides, can’t remember Sony made any ugly camera, most likely this is not the final product.
Rooru S.
9 months ago |The only cameras that have video mode are the NEX VG-series and FS-series. Why do you want to have a video mode in the PASM dial if you have to set the video priorities in video mode again instead of just using the parameters from the camera PASM… I know it’s complicated but hope you get my point.
Rooru S.
9 months ago |Well, it’s your opinion against the echoes of people wanting more direct controls (Since NEX-series announcement back in 2010) instead of having to press center button, select the virtual mode dial, and select the mode you want to use. 3 steps vs 1. That’s moving forward with the system IMHO. So I don’t think mode dial is overrated. Is needed (but not required at all). And that’s why you see the Fn button and many others options that provide direct control and customization.
And, don’t know if this is true, but maybe, we will see the A-mount and RX100 User Interface on the NEX-6. Hope it’s true, even if people says that UI is behind competition, at least is better than NEX UI. That way, we will get rid of comments like, “it takes long time to change something vs competition”.

9 months ago |I do miss the mode dial on my 5N. This is one of the main reasons I consider switching to the Nex 6, (additional dial and hotshoe are some of the other reasons)
Claims like ‘real photographers’ use manual only seem childish to me. All of the scenarios you mention are indeed valid uses mode dial.
Besides, for a single dial body, using manual mode is not practical at all.
Thank you Sony for doing us non-photographers a favor by bringing the mode dial back!

9 months ago |The NEX-6 has just about everything one could ask for in a compact, mirrorless, interchangable lens camera. For me, it’s got all the great features and functionality I could ask for. Plus, it looks pretty sweet too! Can’t wait for the reviews to come in. Definitely considering getting one if all turns out well!
John Maverick
9 months ago |Have to agree. I personally think it looks great. I also much prefer the NEX styling (all models) compared with the OMD-EM5 which is far too cluttered in appearance.
Sqweezy
9 months ago |I seriously doubt those complaining about the mode dial are the ones who were asking for it. More likely, those complaining about it are the ones who DON’T want it.
The fact is, there is a viable market for cameras that include a mode dial. For those that don’t want it, Sony has also produced models that lack one.
It’s great that Sony is giving people options. No one is forcing anyone to buy something they don’t want. Sony is simply catering to consumers with different preferences. A smart move on their part.

9 months ago |That mode dial, so ugly … so strange. It does not fit the nex design at all.
I was thinking about the nex-6 to go along my nex-7. But I might as well go for the nex-5RN with external VF just for esthetic.
By the way, PASM dials are overrated imho. Pretty much useless to have a dial just for this function. shutter/aperture/EV comp dials are far more important. PASM on a soft key or rear key like all the other nex cameras was imho perfect.

9 months ago |Dair, thanks for pointing that out and will be necessary to consider that. I think that I would sacrifice a bit on EVF to have the ability to simultaneously use a flash. I look at it as taking a half step back and two forward. I do wonder how inferior it will be.
Dair
9 months ago |Just bare in mind that the N6′s EVF is rumorred to be inferior to the one in 7. Which also means it’s inferior to the attachable one I think…

9 months ago |Why do you think there’s no touch screen? As it is reportedly going to support “apps” I doubt it would be possible without the touch screen.
The mode dial coupled with the 2nd dial ring on it is better visible in previous pictures.
+ integrated flash (on 5x you can’t use EVF with the flash together)
+ hotshoe (“ISO”)

9 months ago |Indeed an ugly camera from the front. I like it!
Come on guys, you won’t see it from that side that often. You will use this side:
http://cdn.pocket-lint.com/images/Ha70/sony-nex-5r-nex-6-compact-system-camera-pictures-leaked-1.jpg?20120821-141055
(and every camera looks strange without lens)
Still, I wonder if the body is plastic as the F3 or magnesium alloy. The leather grip would probably look better with the same material used on F3/5R but that’s not so important.
The piece in the picture definitely looks like a early pre-production model some parts does not seem to fit together very well (hot shoe vs body etc).
Patrick
9 months ago |Like my partner and my car, I do not give my camera to my friends. Most of my friends are photographers anyways so they use manual.
Also, I don’t need to see which mode I am on because I only use one.
I am not complaining about the PASM dial. I am complaining that the people that asked for it, it would appear, don’t like the aesthetic of it now being in place. Anyways, mastering manual requires you not to switch to any other mode. In most cases, if I was to ever give a non photographer friend my camera, I would just set the exposure and tell him that half pressing the shutter focuses and fully pressing it takes the photo….it is even more simple than switching modes.
Dair
9 months ago |Many camera makers do not seem to share your opinion. I wonder how many professional cameras do not have the PASM dial actually…
In many cases you don’t need the M mode, you just want the certain aperture or shutter – in such cases S and A modes are more flexible. Than you want to shoot with some speciffic settings – you use M. You want to hand the camera over to your friend – set it to Auto… etc. Also you can see the actual setting even without turning the camera on. You can do both (set the mode + power-on) simultaneously when you need to be quick…
The PASM dial is definitely not something I would complain about personally…
Dair
9 months ago |The PASM selector has actually one more dial ring on it. (+There is the ordinary dial on the back side. Even more controls would be indeed nice though.)

Condom analogy here will also serve to explain the ‘soft’ zoom lenses.

9 months ago |I wonder how often do people change modes that have always asked for a mode dial. Regardless what you do, if you master Manual you would never look at a mode change after the day you purchased the camera.
I imagine this:
“Oh, here is a fast movement scene…shutter speed priority…let the cam do the rest.
“Oh, here is a low light scene…aperture priority…let the cam do the rest”
“Oh, there’s Bigfoot!…too much excitement…program mode…let the camera do all while I piss myself from too many emotions running through me”
It should be: “Low light, ISO 1600, f2.2….1/60th, compensate shutter speed exposure if needd.”
“wide open lens, iso 1600 and too low shutter speed? increase ISO”
“f4, iso 100, 1/2000th, nice day, all action stops except bullets”
Indecisive people…

9 months ago |Adam,
NEX is a system that with the right lenses, it can deliver pro results. It really works as a main system and, thanks to the arrival of the 5R, a cheap 5n as back up is always an option. Here in the UK, a 5n can be had for £250 or so.
$4k can get you a long way in NEX land, albeit the CZ 24mm (which I consider a fantastic and essential lens) takes up $1k out of that equation. That being said: 5R with EVF ($~950) or NEX 6 ($1k) + CZ24 +50 1.8 + 35mm 1.8 = ~$3.3k? That leaves enough cash for cards, batteries and maybe even a second hand 5n bought in a fire sale.

9 months ago |Ok I’m curious, considering this is supposed to be the next generation cameras, why is it having a freaking mode dial! It looks totally out of place and of course the silver ring could function as a dial, but it looks puny and probably won’t work as nice as the one found on the new NEX 5 and NEX 7.
And is it that difficult or confusing to press the middle scroll wheel button to change modes? Nikon DLSR requires you to hold onto the mode button + rotate dial to change modes and I don’t see many people complaining about it.
The other benefit for having a virtual mode dial is Sony can add more modes (hopefully rename able custom modes) without being restricted to physical constraints. I do hope the next NEX 7 and 9 will keep the current NEX 7 styling cause it is sleek and very functional, especially once you understand the logic behind the UI.

9 months ago |I have mixed feelings about the “piggyback” mode dial.
Normally I like when there are a lot of real dials, but this seems a bit of a cludge.
I dont switch mode that often, so assigning a whole dial seems overkill, especially as it protrudes a bit too much, and as it is inconsistent with the other NEX cameras. I think that it would be enough to use the Fn button to activate the mode change and then use the dial (the one below the current mode dial) OR the touch screen to select mode.
Adam

9 months ago |I’ve had the Nex 7 for about 6 months now and am very pleased. Mostly I shoot wide and keep the 16mm with the two adaptors on all the time. If I need telephoto, I just grab another camera. This way when out in dusty windy conditions, the ccd never gets exposed to the elements. If I look closely, I can see image degradation at the edges, but it never spoils the picture. I too looked carefully at the Oly 5 and think it would be a great camera. The water resistance is certainly a plus, as is low light handling. A lot would depend on use. I’d wait to see Sony’s lens offering then decide. Prices will only go down.

Where are the useful dials? A PASM dial is nice, but when I’m working I don’t jump between modes that often. What I can’t see are the dials for quickly changing the parameters that do need to be changed rapidly – aperture, shutter speed, ISO, exposure compensation etc. Am I missing something?

And to make story even more fine – you need ADAPTER to use NATIVE flashes for A-mount cameras (so essentially: they ain’t native anymore). Which is totally ridiculous. With new camera you’ll be able to use only one, yes: ONE flash to it’s full potential on a native hotshoe.

9 months ago |Does anyone here see the body as a bit plastic-y? I said this in the other posts when the first photos came out and I wonder whether the manufacturing mold for this cam is based on the F3.
I agree with the people that the lenses (except the rather mysterious one right behind the camera) are current ones. I have the 50 and the 24 so I can confirm those are the current ones. 50 is identifiable by the hood model number (unless a new lens also uses the same hood)

9 months ago |Three new NEX lenses? How is the CZ and 50/1.8 new? Also is the lens behind the NEX the 10-18mm? It’s too big for the 16-50 and too big for the 35/1.8. If that is the 35/1.8 then that is a major let down because it is gigantic. I really hope it isn’t.

9 months ago |Those look like the regular Lenses… the one that’s not the 50 looks as tall as the 50, so that’s the 18-55 for sure due to the hood.
Lenses not leaked

9 months ago |The lenses are
- the 24mm f/1.8 CZ (SEL24F18z)
- the 50mm f/1.8 (SEL50F18)
- the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (SEL1855) (you have to look closely for this one)
So they’re not new for sure.

9 months ago |Looks actually like 24 1.8 Zeiss, 50 1.8 (is this extreme moire on the focus ring or just very bad taste of Sony? I would be surprised!) and behind this ugly NEX 6 (what the hell is this ugly mode-dial doin there?) maybe a smaller lens like a pancake, could be a sigma 19mm though.

9 months ago |My, what a large hood you have.

9 months ago |if any of those 2 lenses back there is the 10-18mm WA lens, then they’re not as big as I’d imagine them to be =D (comparing it to the zeiss 24 of course). I wish they do come in black though

One of the lens is the Zeiss 24mm f1.8.
The body of the Nex 6 is a little smaller than the Nex 7?
