Seems like the 5N will be awesome for video
alphafan2011
2 years ago |yes, seems like the NEX 5N will be the best of the new cams in terms of image quality (looks really good also against Nikon D7000)
… all the 24MP’s seem to be quiet good until ISO 400 and then drop a lot of detail thanks to some nice “sonyish” Noise reduction.
and to be honest, many people try to defend the A77 for its IQ at high iso with saying its pre-production and you can use the Raw-files, but please be honest to yourself, its little bit disappointing. If I want a camera only for ISO 50-400, such a “nice-weather-camera” then in would prefer a canon point-and-shoot like the S95 with the CHDK modification. The results would be comparable to the A77, cause the main advantages of the SLR/SLT’s are the bigger sensor with the better low-light performance. And the same is for video shooting, if i only can go to Iso 400 as a maximum to avoid detail loss, then night or evening shooting with the A77 doesnt make sense.
Everything else besides image quality is of course gread and its a great camera, but probably Sony tried to top everything, also resolution and forgot to think about the consequences. 16MP or maybe like the 7D 18 MP would have been the best solution! Less high iso noise or NR smearing, smaller file sizes, probably higher burst rate and if not at least more space for the files in the buffer, cause now you can shoot 12 fps, but afer 1 1/2 seconds the buffer is full
personally im little bit disappointed, i wanted to buy a A77 or maybe A65, but when i heard 24 MP it couldnt be that good on the “small” APS-C sensor and the first results now show that its right. :-/ so maybe it will be a NEX 5N (cause its the only camera which really IMPROVED image quality) or i have to wait or to look for another brand

2 years ago |hi, the firmware is not final, even the launching at my area is using beta firmware. do expect somewhat better NR.
but most of the time, 8mp is more then enough for any printing (if u use high iso), the noise cant been seen. i shoot iso1600 on my A300, printout turn out FINE.
if u talking bout huge billboard prints, they do the shooting in studio at iso100. not iso1600.
alphafan2011
2 years ago |hopefully you are right, cause everything seems to be fine instead of image quality and if you buy a cam for 1300 Euro you want to have something better in hands than a good point-and-shoot cam, especially in terms of image quality! everything else it not that important, maybe it would have been better to make it “only” a 10fps burst shooting, but with a lot bigger buffer, that you can shoot at least 3-4 seconds with this speed – that would be great! or maybe the possibility to shoot with the 12 MP also choosable, but with the full sensor use, that would be fantastic!
cause now you have the “fastest shooting of its class” with 12 fps but after little more than a second buffer is full and because of the huge image files after this time shooting goes on with something like 1,5 fps, and thats little bit poor i think.
it seems little bit to me, that Sony tried to be the “best” and “first” in every term, best new OLED viewfinder, 3-way tiltable LCD-screen, 24 MP, 12 fps … and so on … for a custumer who doesnt look at reviews and of course for us that we have seen here the rumors that has to be THE CAMERA!
but now you see, 24 MP produce much more NR than the really improved NEX 5N, 12 frames per second are only for that second, and so on … hopefully some points will get better until final, but probably not cause Sony wont give alpha or beta models to the first reviews, so its more like a “near final” stadium … unfortunately!

2 years ago |@alphafan2011. I agree with you totally. IQ is everything and I’m praying that Sony will work some magic with the final firmware and get some fantastic IQ out of the A77 and A65 otherwise I’ll have to stick with my A700 and wait for the next offering.
I dont want to buy into the Sony E mount and start collecting more lenses. Going back to the A55 is not an option and I dont want to switch brands.

2 years ago |I tested with my a580 last night with default jpegs vs a well-processed raw file. The difference is absolutely massive.
What you’re seeing at the high ISO isn’t really noise.. it’s the effect of attempting too much noise reduction, Robbing details and smoothing over the area.
You have to remember that you can’t BUY this camera until October. Review sites are being premature in making reviews based on sample models. They just want to be the first to review things. Although some sites have had enough integrity and said they won’t review image quality yet.
Really, the best thing to do is be patient. You can’t buy and have the camera until October, so why not wait a bit? Wait until you can download a raw file and open it with proper software and put it through your own workflow. Then you can make a fair judgement.
Do you REALLY think Sony would make a semi-pro camera with worse image quality than their entry level models. Really? After seeing all the attention to detail with everything else, I really don’t think they would include such a fundamental flaw.

2 years ago |I think the firmware excuse is false hope. Once the camera is finally tested, reviewed and released, I highly doubt it will be dramatically different. The difference in firmware on the quality of photo is going to be marginal at best. I think the physics of it prevents a better firmware fix. There’s only so much light. SLRs use all of it and the SLT uses ~70% of it. I don’t see how firmware solves this. Just like with the a55 video overheating problem, there are some physical issues that software can never address.
I own a a350 and have been waiting for this camera (since the a55 can’t take more than a few minutes of video), but what I’m seeing from the preproduction A77 is disappointing. If I’m to spend $1400 on a camera (more than expected), I’m expecting good looking photos from most of the ISO range and in JPEG.
I hope that the photo quality issues will be resolved between now and when the thing is released. I would prefer Sony delay the release if they need to make improvements.

David
2 years ago |Not false hope.
Test your alpha camera right now. Dark room, high ISO in RAW+jpeg mode with noise reduction.
Then compare the jpeg with the raw file once you’ve processed it. A *WORLD* apart. Sony loves crushing noise reduction for some reason.
alphafan2011
2 years ago |Well you are right, that the RAW image is nearly always better than the jpeg … BUT:
1. when you always only shoot RAW to get a better result, you dont have something to show instantly, you need always time to convert to jpeg, you have slower burst rate and faster buffer filling with pics, and so on …
so of course RAW has better quality, but you shouldn’t be limited to it because of bad jpegs, especially not in this price range, for a 400-500 € DSLR maybe, but not for 1300 €!
2. also the RAW pics dont look that good, they have definately more noise than the A35 or comparable cams in that price range (D7000, 7D) and the NEX 5N (in my opinion the only step forward in image quality of the new cams) beats it easily!
so I dont think that there will be a that much better firmware until release, that crazy smearing/painting Noise reduction from Sony seems to be the state of the art for them, look hat the high Iso’s from the Sony HX9 for example, its the same “painting” look … but for a cam with lens for 300 € its more understandable than for a set of cam and lens for 2000 €
the problem for me is, that im new to that DSLR/SLT thing, currently i “only” have Canon SX220 with CHDK extension and wanted to go a step further, waited for these Sony’s but now?
little bit disappointed, bad High Iso quality, huge image files (result: small buffer fills very fastly), more expensive than thought (especially in Europe) and so on …
so in image quality it wouldnt be a huge improvement to my SX220, cause i also can use ISO 30 or 40 and the low light performance is for a compact really good. So the main thing would be to have even better low light, but only the new NEX 5N can deliver in that thing.

2 years ago |I agree with Steve, I find it amazing that the IQ is soo horrible (what othere word can you use, disgusting maybe?) atthe higher ISO’s. Lots of improvements in many area’s but somehow it seems they forgot a camera is for making pictures with. With IQ this bad they should never have released it if a firmware fix will fix that. Also there is a lot of talk in comments of using the raw files and getting decent jpeg’s from that. Come on this is no rocket science for a company like Sony, they could have had there JPEG engine improved easily (or buy away some Nikon engineers who always get better results out of Sony sensors which is very weird IMO). I have been waiting for this camera a long time (and will wait for the pictures of the production model) but things look very grim in my opinion. And believe it or not I am a real Sony fan…

2 years ago |I agree,
Maybe those of us reading the hopes, dreams of Sony fan-boys got caught up in this long drawn out product release and just expected too much.
Early rumors of a technical revolution that would bring ISO into the “hundreds of thousands” with this camera didn’t help.
The camera is a very good camera, and maybe the best camera body under $2,000.
Although I wasn’t planning on purchasing the a77 I deeply hoped it would live up the hype, because it would mean that when Sony ships the full-frame next year that would replace my Alpha 850’s would likely be incredible product.
I still have my hopes as I wait to see Sony’s full-frame roadmap and A-Mount lens roadmap and saving my cash till then.

2 years ago |The future firmwares from Sony will fix majority of the issues that people are now complaining, the same thing happen to the NEX models.
One thing for sure Sony cannot please everybody as well still playing catch up with the big dogs Canon and Nikon.
We never know the future looks bright and many things can change in the future and others manufactures will wake and a bigger race will begin.
I saw one video a few months ago from Samsung and they had a 300mm lens including a DLSR prototype in back without them saying anything, but those who watched noticed something in the horizon.
Let us see the right models with full firmware in the market and then we can make our judgments.
Wirralpix
2 years ago |I’m waiting patiently for final firmware, but Sony have had this camera in production for four years and should have had a release with the final firmware included. Also lets not forget that if you want to limit your shooting to RAW only then you’re losing all of the Style settings that are available in JPEG. I know, no serious photographer would think of using the camera in JPEG. They may have too much fun.

2 years ago |On the up side, I am now super excited about the IQ of the 5N. It looks like Sony did something right there.
The 7? That could be another story and a big blunder if they screw up the IQ on such a nice shooting platform. At this stage, I’m thinking that camera should have been 16mp.

They almost look too good to be true ! No aliasing, no rolling shutter, very fast and precise focus, huge bitrates… What have they done with the Nex-5N ? It’s light years away from the NEX-5. Gotta get me one of those
SAIUN
2 years ago |What are you on about? The video of the street that’s taken from the top of a building shows mountains of aliasing; even more than a Canon DSLR. Especially if you look at the bricks on the side of the building at the bottom right.
Very disappointing considering how little aliasing there was on the Sony HX9V.

2 years ago |There is a big difference between a properly processed RAW file and a Sony JPEG file. I’ve never been really happy with Sony’s JPEG engine (especially as implemented in more recent cameras). If you want to judge a camera by its JPEG output, that’s fine. There’s a reason for RAW files. One of them is that if you don’t agree with how a manufacturer converts data into a JPEG image, then you can do it yourself. If Sony has clean RAW images then we can pretty much say that their JPEG engine is lacking. I do think that this is one consequence of adding video capability to the cameras. Many recent cameras with video (not just Sony) tend to have aggressive noise reduction on the JPEGs. Still, it’s something Sony must improve upon. The HX9V, for example, is a terrific compact but it also has overly aggressive noise suppression in the JPEG ourput (and it has no raw output). On the otherhand, the HX9V video capture capability is trememedous.
ahhh-lpha100
2 years ago |Almost can’t believe that is the problem because very easy to make a switch in the engine that works based on what the camera is doing? If “0″ … (for pictures), if “1″ .. (for video). Very simple fix for the problem you describe. Almost too simple to talk about. So why not? (because you seem to know what you are talking about).

2 years ago |I agree, the video is a nice bonus but if that’s all you want buy a video cam. Pictures are a first.
Sky_walker
2 years ago |certainly. Though A77 offers more for stills shooting than majority of competition in it’s near price-point. Picture quality is to be seen yet, but if they’ll match RAW performance 1:1 with A33/55 than I’ll be happy. It’ll give photos with more details, and more place to play with for crops, while still being stunning camera outmatching Canon alternatives.

as SLRClub has been having some good stuff lately and it’s in korean I had an idea to solve the image review problem but I was was kind of lazy to try when you posted this – or the one before – but today I gave it a shot in a monitor review.
you can printscreen the text and upload it via Google Docs and then try to translate it. It won’t be 100% since neither the translation nor the transcription are accurate. it seems that it works better with small parts at time than the whole text at once, so with Mac you can use the Shift+Cmd+4 for selevtive printscreen, with Windows I think you’ll have to download a printscreen software.
anyway, as I said, it’s not perfect but it can be better than nothing, right?
