Sigma 35mm f/1.4 tested at dpreview.

The Big guys over at Dpreview posted the full Sigma 35mm f/1.4 lens test. And the lens got a “Gold Award” with a very high score of 89%: “The Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG HSM is a truly excellent lens, that performs as well in the field as its superb lab test results suggest. With fast silent focusing and solid build, its lower price makes it a compelling alternative to the camera manufacturers’ equivalents if you don’t need weather-sealing.”
The A-mount lens is availble for preorder at Amazon (Click here), Adorama (Click here) and BHphoto (click here). To get notified when this lens is on eBay login and save this search at Slidoo.

5 months ago |Problem is that the accessory dock will only work with the upcoming versions of lenses. I believe one reason for recent great sales on Sigma lenses has been to clear inventory and make room for upcoming new versions compatible with the dock. It’s a real shame they couldn’t make it backward compatible with their current lenses, but they are really most interested in how many new lenses they can sell.

5 months ago |If one judges lens only by sharpness, that’s so. Minolta/Sony version has a bokeh and overall look as a 85mm 1.4 prime. Sigma is not. So it is up to a photographer, which one to choose. I would by Minolta/Sony.

Frank
5 months ago |Simple economics, the number of Sony users that would buy this lens is tiny. I’d release the lens for CaNikon mount well before Sony.

Well that’s just my opinion, for the rest it seems like a perfect lens!

5 months ago |Lets see, Sigma 35mm is not available for the RX1 (for obvious reasons) and the Zeiss 35mm on the RX1 is not available for anything else (for obvious reasons). So a pretty weird comparison! In Alpha mount you now have 2, that’s right count them… 2! Options for 35mm full frame lenses – the Sony G 35mm and the Sigma 35mm. At least there is a second option now.

You meant two AF FF lenses?

5 months ago |Ok but even Sony G has better bokeh. I mean we talk about a lot of lens problems, but all of them can be corrected in post (ok sharpness cannot). But the bokeh is one mayor part in my picture, not only on pixel level. If it’s not totally creamy, the picture is crap. Just my opinion…

5 months ago |I had the Sony 35G on my a850 and I was never that impressed with the bokeh. I remember the bokeh being quite swirly and outlined, rather than smooth. The lens overall was pretty soft wide open with that kinda “halo’ed” appearance. Maybe it’s a good look for some, but not particularly useful for me. The autofocus was terrible – it was the most indecisive lens I owned and it would stutter or rack back and forth constantly.
Admittedly the Sigma doesn’t have the best bokeh in the world, but I don’t think any 35mm lens is any better. And at least the Sigma is sharp and has good autofocus, AND costs less than the Sony 35G.
Rather than turn their noses up at it, Sony A-mount shooters should be massively grateful for any extra lenses they get. God know Sony aren’t delivering much themselves.
