Just found this on ebay: hxxp://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sony-Alpha-SLT-A77-A77-DSLR-Camera-Body-Only-/390351655733?pt=AU_Digital_Cameras&hash=item5ae2c59335
The sub-title of this A77-offer reads “Ability to switch between PAL and NTSC Video”.
If this proves to be true with the firmware V1.03, the A77 is going to be my next camera, yeah!
SonyA77
8 months ago |Out of interest, why would not be able to switch between 30/60 and 25/50 stop you buying it? Where I live I couldn’t care less about 30/60.
Gorn
8 months ago |I understand people that don’t care about this little feature and I think this camera will be a big seller on the cam market without it.
The reason I complain about this is that I would like to use this camera not only to take photos but to shoot little movies as well. And not only during daytime but also under artificial light.
I live in a PAL country where the frequency of the power grid is 50Hz – so I need 50/25fps to avoid flickering video.
As it happens sometimes I travel to a non-PAL (i.e. NTSC) country. The lights there flicker with 60Hz. Filming with my PAL camera this would result in an ugly flickering video.
This might sound a bit constructed an example, but for me it’s a valid reason.
Another reason is that I don’t see WHY Sony chose not to implement both possibilities when in my opinion it could be easily made. I’m not willing to support such a restricted policy and am protesting by not buying (mwahaha).
.
I know this won’t affect Sony much, but as I do not depend on having the A77 at the moment (or anytime in the future really, I think), I might as well state my point and see if anybody at Sony listens
I won’t think bad of anybody buying the A77. It’s still a great camera.
I just think it could be greater with not much of an effort.
SonyA77
8 months ago |I thought it might be travel, but your reason might be something I hadn’t thought of. Thanks.
Yes I agree, it should be switch-able.

8 months ago |Because if Sony won’t allow you to use 24fps then PAL is the next best thing. I hate 30fps and wish we were on the PAL system. Everything NTSC looks like cheap home video. And for anyone that says there is no difference – that it’s the lighting and whatnot that give your videos that “film look” – you are wrong. Ask anyone is animation or gaming.
Gorn
8 months ago |The film look may be an issue as well (though not for me), but I would certainly appreciate an international standardisation. Won’t happen, of course, so that leaves me waiting for Sony to make their stuff compatible.
Mark D
8 months ago |Well, I wouldn’t put my hope into some feature only mentioned by an ebay seller.
As much as I’d like to see this option too, I don’t think Sony will allow its users to switch between NTSC/PAL in their APS_C models anytime soon…

8 months ago |I got my a65 today from Sony UK (pre-loaded with 1.03). I’ve got a new Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX. Unfortunately the auto-focus operates intermittently/poorly.
Anyone else seen this problem? This is my only lens (at the moment) so I cannot isolate the issue to the lens or camera.
Thanks
David
8 months ago |Sigma – I identified your problem.
I’ve never had a particularly good experience with them. They’re optically excellent, but always AF issues. I dealt with it but as soon as I started buying nicer stuff I learned what to REALLY expect.
Also the sigma HSM night not be compatible with slt cameras. Sigma should update it for you for free. I’ve needed their lenses repaired three times and every time their customer service has been excellent.
Steve S
8 months ago |The problem with Sigma and SLT cameras is mechanical. The aperture ring doesn’t open back up all the time when the lens is stopped down. If you have a f5.6 lens and you set it to f8, it will might stay at f8. So the auto focus can’t focus at f8. I had my lenses fixed free by sigma. They change the whole lens mount. Take a few shot and check to see if the aperture opens up after the shot.
SonyA77
8 months ago |Sigma!
There is a known problem with Sigma lenses and all SLT cameras. Sigma don’t pay for the license for the lens mount and reverse engineer the chip. This is a SIGMA problem, not a SONY one.
Contact Sigma. In the UK you will need to provide proof that you have an SLT camera and the receipt for the lens. The cost is higher if you don’t have a receipt.
New Sigma models have a logo on the box saying compatible with Sony A33/55 SLT, I guess these also work on the A65/77, I hope so as I have a Sigma lens!
Almazar80
8 months ago |Joining the chorus – the problem is most probably Sigma. Buying Sigma is like playing roulette every time a new Sony camera comes out. Not Sony’s fault – Sigma has not licensed the A-mount officially and retro-engineers the electronics of their lenses. Thus, a subtle change by Sony (that doesn’t affect their lenses or those made by licensees, such as Tamron) could be problematic and require a rom upgrade on the Sigma lens.

8 months ago |Does anyone know if this is also a case for Tamron lenses? does some AF Tamron lenses for sony a mount also has the AF issues? If i buy a third party lens for sony, would any of you suggest i get a Tamron or a Sigma?
Jonathan
8 months ago |I don’t believe Tamron have any issues… I think it’s only Sigma that has issues and they should update them free of charge as in the end it’s due to a Sigma issue and not Sony, as you will find out Tamron, Minolta and other brands should work just fine.
I don’t believe Tamron have any issues… I think it’s only Sigma that have issues and they should update them free of charge as from what I can tell it’s a Sigma issue.
Announcement from Sigma:
http://www.sigmaphoto.com/news/notice-to-sony-alpha33-and-alpha55-owners-using-sigmas-sony-fit-lenses
Some more details can be found at this URL about the issue: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1037&thread=36282676
Sigma also has had some other issues with camera body’s such as the A700 damaging Sigma lenses due to cheap AF components that can get stripped so I’ve generally tried to stay away from Sigma, and rather moved over to Tamron and never had a issue yet (having said that many other users use Sigma and have been very happy!)

8 months ago |Hopefully they also improve the IQ a little bit, cause what I see is not more resolution (=more details), its less details and more noise than any of the competitors. like here:

8 months ago |Ok so I loaded the 1.03 firmware.
Don’t forget to initalize your camera after you have loaded the firmware.
I do this because I am paranoid.
Tested with my Zeiss 24-70.
In comparison to 1.02 (crap broken firmware)
No more camera freezes.
Startup and Shutdown seems a little faster.
Dials changes the display numbers faster, feels more responsive, still a minor lag like 0.25-0.35 of a second. Not as fast as the A55 with firmware 2.0 which is nearly instant.
The noise in RAW is still terrible. I wouldn’t shoot anything above ISO 800.
At 3200, you will start to see many reddish/orange specks.
I am using Image Data Converter 4.0 and it does a pretty good job in removing the noise, but it won’t cope with ISO 3200. Just turn off the NOISE REDUCTION in the software and you will see a very noisy picture.
Shooting at 16000 will result in something like 4th of July fireworks celebration, not that you would ever go that high.
Sony has alot of work ahead of them to clean the NOISE level in RAW.
I own an A55 as well, and the noise performance is better then the A77 in RAW. Yes I do know the Sensor in the A77 is 24MP… But it would be a great feat if Sony could match the same noise level.
funnything
8 months ago |yes you are right, I also wanted to buy the A77, but the problem is, I already have a good-weather low ISO camera … ok, its only a compact camera, but the IQ at this level is similar. And for higher ISOs (everything above 200/400) the A77 is definately not suited, even in RAW its much worse than for example the Canon 600D! Look here its very disappointing:
http://tinyurl.com/6xl95mo
so where is the strength of the NEW, GREAT sensor? go to ISO 50 and you also dont have more visible details than those competitors … so the result is: all the gimmicks and additional features like the EVF, short burst length but high fps shooting, improved AF system are great, BUT the image quality (and that is what counts most of the time) is worse than most of the competitors!
Ok, with lenses 1000 Euro or above and a lot of post processing you can get something out of some ISO 1600/3200 pics, but the guy with the 600D and kit lens (together 600 Euro, not 2200) smiles in your face because he has it much easier … but you smile back and tell him, BUT ITS AN A77

8 months ago |@ Happy. I’ve also got the A77 and I agree about the blochy color noise when viewed at 100%.
I tried IDCv4 and had difficulties succesfully reducing the noise in the RAW files but with ACR 6.5 support for LR3 I’m a little more successful but the detail that’s lost is worrying.
As I only print images to A3 noise with the A77 isn’t a big issue.
SonyA77

The best NOISE ELIMINATOR is TOPAZ DENOISER!
It is the BEST!
with this I can use the camera up to 1600-2400 ISO.
Happy
8 months ago |Here is a pretty good process pipeline.
CAMERA RAW -> IDC 4.0 (because it’s good at eliminating noise without the loss of detail).
IDC 4.0 -> export TIFF (16 bit) -> Photoshop
Photoshop – Topaz DeNoiser = Final output
I find this to work very well… better then Lightroom!
People post your workarounds to this NOISE issue. I have a feeling 1.04 will not be out for some time!

8 months ago |Does this FW allows tethered shooting?
Happy
8 months ago |No
SonyA77
8 months ago |Highly unlikely, it is not listed in the improvements.
Jonathan
8 months ago |+1 (also interested in this, I’m holding off on purchasing the A77 but if tethered support has been added I’ll get one put on order)…
Another thing I’m interested to know if they made the switching from EVF to LCD and back any quicker (not a major issue for me but would be nicer to have a shorter delay as it seems the NEX-7 has (could be wrong but video review seemed better speed than A77 so must just be a firmware issue with A77 I’m guessing)….
Few other points to check is how fast you can change aperture (I noticed a review from Digitalrev shows it was very laggy before on the small LCD display).
Also is power up and power off times improved, I see there was a post saying it’s been improved and offered some timings which seemed a little better but still not great start-up times (again not a huge issue for me but faster would be good)
This is the fixes listed by Sony (so some are sounding positive but no tethered support mentioned yet and interested in your findings after the udpate):
1. Support flash control function for Micro Twin Flash Kit, HVL-MT24AM.
2. Improved response time of the following operation,
- Switching the screen mode between the LCD monitor and the electronic viewfinder
- Front and Rear control dial
- Fn button control
3. Other functional improvement.
P.S. ‘Sony Alpha Rumours’ are you able to ask your sources IF Sony will be adding tethered support to the A77 any time soon?

8 months ago |I bought the A77 a few weeks ago in Indonesia, I am a fan of Minolta and I must admit that the image quality of the A77 is extremely disappointing..the price of the A77 is so expensive if you campore it to the old A200…actually there’s no big difference in terms of image quality..a a200 with a new firmware could produce the almost the same image quality I guess..
I think , I am just a victim a Sony’s marketing strategy..all these epecs made my dream..and since i received the camera I almost don’t use it..I am just thinking It would be cleverer to switch to another system.. the raw quality of the A77 is CRAP…I regert the A580 doesn’t have a better handling..as many people said before..the A580 with the A77 body and specs (except the 24mp) would be a great bargain under $900…
SonyA77
8 months ago |If you think the sensor in the A200 can in any way match the A77 then you are simply delusional. It didn’t even match the A700.
The A77 RAW is not “crap”, it appears that you don’t know how to convert it. I’d suggest sticking to jpeg instead of talking bollocks mate.

8 months ago |I agree on what sony a750 wrote…the a200 is a great camera..and i regret some people are almost insulting others on the forum..I mean it’s my right to complain about the noise of the A77..there’s no real upgrade with the a77 for me as i shoot mainly portrait with a rokkor 58 1.2..it’s not super detailed compared to a a200..i mean u can get a a200 for $200 and the a77 cost $1400.I think it’s not worth the money ..I am wondering why sony a77 is asking me to stick to jpeg..i never shoot jpg coz it has too many inconvenients..i am just wondering who the f… are u? a super photographer i guess? be aware there must be thousands of greats photographers shooting jpg..whether u shoot jpg or raw doesn’t really matter after all..the man behind the camera does…
but i guess it’s impressive to see the specs on the paper for people like u..sony has made a great marketing job! thatnks to sony u r convince to have purchased a great camera for a good price..Alhamdulillah!!!
