Sony US announces a NEX-5n fix service to remove the “Click” issue.
There is now an official press release from Sony support US:
“Thank you for your support of Sony products.
We have received reports of a “clicking” sound which may be heard in the audio playback of movies recorded by the NEX-5N camera. This phenomenon occurs if the camera undergoes sudden motion while recording; motion generally inconsistent with smooth video recording. The video is unaffected by this sound.
In accordance with Sony’s policy of continuous product improvement, an adjustment has been developed to reduce the clicking sound resulting from sudden motion during movie recording.
Sony will offer this performance improvement to NEX-5N end users during the period of its limited warranty accompanying the product. Please call 888-868-7392 to arrange for this improvement.”
I didn’t find any similar news in European or Asian countries. Drop us a comment if you find them! Thanks!
Sony NEX-5n order links: Amazon, Adorama, B&H, J&R, eBay.

8 months ago |And true to form some in the dpreview forums are criticizing Sony for a half baked fix, even without knowing what Sony is going to be doing with their cameras. Yes, every manufacturer can come up with defective products. The measure of a good manufacturer is finding out what happened, fixing the defect, and making that fix available to its customers. I hope that the fix works – I am sending my 5N for the fix. In the meantime, thanks Sony!

7 months ago |Hi!
I’m curious to hear the end of your story! Did the fix work?
Thanks

8 months ago |They should find a way to show on the new NEX5N if they’re bugged or not. This alone, would be a reason good enough for not buying, in case they don’t do it. Anyway.. this is quite a bad advertisement. Best sensor of the bunch of cameras announced, has a flawed body. That’s what happens when you ask for cheap stuff.

8 months ago |Cheap compared to what? Retailers will probably send back their stock. If they don’t, well they should!

8 months ago |Just sent a lovely note to Sony FR and BE about this, quoting the Sony US fix, we’ll see what they say,
Will update you folks, but expecting feedback next week I presume, since it came late US time, the poor Asian and EU owners might need to be a tiny bit more patient…
Sony needs to have this right, hope we don’t end up with horrors stories “post-fix” ! let’s hope for the best !
PS: “generally inconsistent with smooth video recording”.. CLASSIC

8 months ago |Sony said to REDUCE and nothing about FIXING the clicking issue!
Vlad
8 months ago |Well, if they reduce it until you can’t hear it…
Renato M.
8 months ago |then it would be FIXING and not REDUCING…
I think that they may be able to really fix it but I think they cowardly prefer to not make a commitment in case they don’t.

8 months ago |They’ll put some gaffer tape somewhere inside the chassis..
Don Cox
8 months ago |Gaffer tape might in fact reduce the click considerably, at least at first. It tends to dry out and become less elastic.
Snapperbox
8 months ago |They might do both. Gaffer and also reduce the sensitivity of the built in mic.
Neodraig
8 months ago |I hope they’ll do something for European countries.
The only problem is I live in France and I bought my camera in Asia, don’t know if they’ll accept to fix my camera
Matt
8 months ago |Personally the built in audio systems in these cameras are so far below usable that it is completely inconsequential whether this has an audible clicking issue or not. No one I work with would care one iota if it had no sound at all. In fact it would be nice to use every extra bit the audio wastes in improving the video codec.
But I can certainly see how this would be annoying for many users.

8 months ago |Excellent! Now I just have to wait some time to be sure the NEX-5N I buy will be an updated one. Not a very big issue for me but very nice they have found a fix. Well there could still be some clicking sound, but I guess it will be more silent and harder to trigger now.
A bit funny, the NEX-5N got excellent image and video quality and
the only issue is some clicking noise in videos
Would be interesting to hear what the source of the clicking noise was.
And how the fixed it.
Well done Sony!
(even more well done if Sony add audio gain control in firmware update
later)

8 months ago |Does anyone know whether the next batch of NEX-5N have it fixed already in production? How can these be distinguished from the first batch?
Rawfa
8 months ago |So, from the text I gather the camera will have to be shipped back to Sony so they may apply the fix. I was about to buy this camera when I read about the clicking issue…I would still buy it if it could be fixed via firmware, but I guess no such luck…
Matt
8 months ago |Or wait until the initial glitches are resolved and for buyers users reporting that their units are glitch free? Sony will want to fix the design rather than continually have to repair them post sales. Just wait a bit.
Erwin
8 months ago |I thought like that too, so last week I bought this camera and now I read this… to bad and I’m living in “South East Asia” not in USA.
Now my hope only if they can fix via firmware update.
Aram
8 months ago |The service center in the US is in Texas. Customer service says it’ll take them about 5-7 business days for the repair – once I get my shipping label I’ll be sending it off. Let you know how it goes.

8 months ago |“Click” “Click” “Click” is a motto of Sony marketing campaign
lol…
Renato M.
8 months ago |but does that mean I have to send my camera to Sony?
I notice that the clicking happens when you suddenly changes direction. for example, if you turn your camera in only one direction, it will make only one click. it’s like some part of the insides of the camera is a bit loose in a small space and it acts like a little pendulum.
I wish Sony could tell us why it’s loose and what it does. it makes me wonder how did something so noticeable didn’t show in their tests. with proper tests and testers there is no way something like this wouldn’t been noticed.
Renato M.
8 months ago |Actually I tried a normal footage without swinging the camera like crazy but it still does the clicking so, yeah, it’s pretty damn annoying!
Aldo
8 months ago |I want to know how we identify when we buy the NEX-5N if this is the problem of “click” or is a camera that no longer has this problem, all without opening the box (should place a mark in the boxes so know what the new batch without this problem)

8 months ago |I like to know how much time Sony needs to have the improved 5n in stores…

8 months ago |Yeah, as much as people need the fix, there are people out there who’d wait to get a fixed version. A date would be useful.

8 months ago |Hi everybody. I am living in Spain. But I have ordered my nex-5n from US. I am not very worried about the clicking issue, but if it is possible to fix it, I will try it. Do you know if I could send (if my camera clicks) my unit to the Spanish Sony division? I hope my warranty is worldwide !!!!
Thanks in advance for your answers.
dts
8 months ago |i’m in denmark and bought the us-version too as i need 24p/60p but the warranty card says US only… but let’s check with local service center. so far with my smooth movements i haven’t had any problems, and for more serious sound i will get the sst1 anyway…
Alfonso Ortega
8 months ago |Hi dts.
I have phoned to the Spanish division and told me that no support is given to those product they don’t sell in Spain. Nex-5n is not sold “right now” in Spain. But, even if the original warranty says “US only”, I hope that, when Sony sells the camera in Spain (in no more than two months) there will be some way to fix the possible “clicking issue” here.
You are right, it is possible that our units do not have any problem.
I have just bought (today) my unit at B&H (NY)
ageha
8 months ago |I’m not surprised. You will have to pay for the support in Spain or you can send it back to B&H.
Mel
8 months ago |Reduce? How about eliminate. Either way, it’s a photo camera – not a dedicated video camera. Anyone saying that Sony is a bad company should just buy a real video camera or an external mic if your doing pro work. The audio on these cameras suck anyways.
TTT
8 months ago |By your words to eliminate clicking problem sony must slitly change the specs and add to in 1080p without sound. If it say 1080p with stereo sound then it must fix any problems with sound. Fix and not reduce.
Thomas
8 months ago |The clicking isn’t really an issue for me because I use a separate audio recorder whenever I shoot anything that I’m serious about. However, it would be an issue come ebay time. I haven’t owned a camera yet that I haven’t sold within a year or two and I doubt that the 5N (as much as I like it) will be the first.

I wouldn’t want to do that with mine.

8 months ago |yeah,
Sony France announced we can start shipping nex 5n for the clicking issue via the SAV, the same way the Sony US support advised a few days back,
http://www.sony.be/discussions/message/692850#692850
Guess most people would want to wait for “fixed 5n” stories, especially since it seems to involve lubricating the shutter…
We will found out soon enough I guess !!
For info, for Belgium bases owners, you’ll need to go through your shop, since no return directly via Sony there (guess for Benelux too)

8 months ago |I am from Asia. I tried the camera at one of the local store. I purposely move the camera vigorously and found no clicking sound. I will try again this weekend to find out more.
