(SR5) Worldwide first picture of the final A77 and A65 production models!
And here we are! On top of the post you can see the world first picture showing the upcoming new Sony A77 and A65 translucent models! Sony original plan was to announce those cameras in July but the announcement has been delayed to late August because of the recent production issues that external suppliers had after the Tsunami-Fukushima disaster. The Sony A77 will be Sony’s new top APS-C model and replace the now very old Sony A700 (Click here to see that camera). It has a newly developed 24 Megapixel sensor which we have been told will deliver a crazy ISO performance. Specs are not 100% finalized yet but it looks like the ISO range goes from 100 up to 102.400 ISO. The A77 uses a new double Bionz processor and a newly developed 3 million dot OLED EVF. It takes more than 10 frames per seconds and has 11 cross AF points. Of course it can record videos at FullHD. It has a new USB 3.0 connection (with transmission speeds of up to 5 Gbit/s). Both cameras (the A77 and A65) will use the new translucent technology (there will be no optical viewfinder Sony camera anymore!). That allows Sony to reduce the production costs and we expect the A77 body only price to be around $1.000 only! That’s much less than the competition:
Check Canon 7D price at Amazon, Adorama, B&H, J&R, eBay.
Check Nikon D7000 price at price at Amazon, Adorama, B&H, J&R, eBay.
UPDATE: A source noticed that many of you asked about the GPS. He sent me a text saying that both cameras will have built-in GPS! -> Thanks source
First user that tested the camera told us the AF is very fast and accurate. The OLED viewfinder has almost no noticeable lag or flickering. We will post more A77 user reports during the next weeks! If you don’t want to miss any future rumor be sure to join us on Facebook and Twitter and subscribe our RSS-feed!
And what do we know about the A65? The A65 will replace the current Sony A55 (Click here to see that camera). It has very similar A77 specs. The main difference is that the A65 has no magnesium alloy and no top LCD (as you can see that from the picture).
One more thing: But there will be many more new Sony cameras and lenses this summer. There will be new NEX Pro that will feature the same A77 sensor, a new Sony NEX-VG10 successor, new lenses (Zeiss and Sony) for both Alpha and E-mount systems.
Those are the detailed A77 specs (some minor aspects could be subject to change until the final announcement):
The A77 announcement on late August.
Shipment start early October
Coming with new kit lens (A Sony 16-50mm zoom. Compared to the Zeiss 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 it will have a constant aperture and probably have a bit higher price. Zeiss 16-80mm price check at Amazon, Adorama, B&H, J&R, eBay.)
24 Megapixels (The combination of the new sensor+new Zeiss lens delivers 62% more resolution than the A55 16 Megapixel sensor.)
1080p/30fps, 720p/60fps and 720p/30fps high-definition video
AF fine-tuning capabilities. A source told us that it has an improved focusing system (quite fast and accurate).
11 cross points
over 10fps
3 Million dot OLED viewfinder (more than double of the resolution fo the current Sony A55/33 viewfinder.)
magnesium alloy
It will take CF+SD
+MS
cards
No flip-up mode to allow shooting without this extra sheet of glass in place
1.000 pictures with one battery
Price body only = $1000.

All the work you see here is made by me during my free time. If you want to help me to cover the monthly server costs there is an easy way: Click on affiliate links you see on that website like Amazon, Adorama, B&H, J&R, eBay to buy whatever product you want (it doesn’t have to be a camera) and I will earn a small commission from it. You don’t pay any penny more on the items you buy and at the same time you support SonyAlphaRumors without me having to put 100 banners on my website. Cool or not? Thanks

12 months ago |Great news, Sony! If the majority of specs proves to be true, that will mean that Sony becomes a technological leader in that APS-C category, where 7D, D7000 and D300s are. Being a Canon shooter, I believe such advanced models will make Canon wake up and really work on making better photographic tools – i.e with better dynamic range, better high ISO performance, better Live View implementation etc and not just only the boring megapixel racing.

12 months ago |if the A65 has the good 3 mill. pic. view finder and even a 18MP i thinkn i am sold as i rather like the LCD on my A330 being jsut a flip up or down shooting as i have never need to shoot a pic around a corner
so my bets are that ziess took the 16-80 chassis and built the fixed 2.8 around it as a cost saver. tho i was hopingthat they woudl update the 16-80 as thats the one i was wanting
sounds liek i ll buy the 16-80 and then in the fall or a bit latter get my new body
Raul S.
12 months ago |So the A77 comes with weather-proof sealing right???
I’m really really excited with this post…still wondering about the NEX pro camera you mentioned…all this time, a77 has been mentioned on almost every post, but the NEX pro being mentioned only as a far truth…
Thank You very much for bringing us some light in all this darkness from Sony ^^

12 months ago |i would think the range would have ot be DT as FF 16-50 would be a bit wide dont you think
at first it was said that the new lens would be CZ but as i too saw the no DT lens from CZ any more i had thought this being in the works would be the last “in the pipeline”

Marc
12 months ago |As I’m planning to buy either the A35 or A65, there’s still some unknown details that would help me with my decision:
- PRICE: If the A77 is 999$/€ and the A35 is 599$/€, where will the A65 be placed ? I guess it mostly depends on the sensor and the buffer memory. I would buy it immediately for 699$/€ (body only), but I guess 799$/€ is a bit more realistic.
- SIZE: Since there are several differences between the bodies of the A77 and the A65 (material, top LCD, dials?, flash?), what size will the A65 be ? I hope it’s the same compact size as A33/A35/A55.
- DISPLAY: I can’t see from the photo whether both cameras use the same flip/tilt/rotate mechanism or not. I hope the display of the A65 can be rotated to allow self-portraits.
Matt
12 months ago |Looks like the a65 display does swivle as well (just not in this picture) if you look closely they both have that Wishbone Hinge Andrea mentioned a few A77 posts back.
Gosh I can’t wait – do I sell my a55 for the a77 though? I could sell it now while prices (in Australia) are high, make a tidy profit and use my NEX3 for a couple months
hanugro
12 months ago |I think the body only price is spot on $799 for A65 and $999 for A77. IMHO A77 will be slightly smaller and obviously lighter than A700. While A65 will be tad smaller and lighter than A580.

12 months ago |When you say the A65 does not have top LCD, do you mean it doesn’t have the electrical view finder? How can that be? The A33, A35, A55 all has EVF.
Can someone clarify?
I’m not that interested in A77 since it’s probably as large as medium size DSLR, I’m interested in A65 for a smaller compact DSLR.

12 months ago |Hello all,
I think I would replace my old Dynax 7d by the a77. The metall casing makes me hope that it’s no vacuum cleaner (less static load) and more stable (stuctural and thermal). Let’s see what’s Sony’s definition of progress …
GJH2
12 months ago |But what are the specs regarding video? Will Sony finally have a camera that can compete with the GH2 and all the DSLRs- or will they still cripple the video and audio capabilities?
Stewe
12 months ago |My guess that level of video will be the same like in a33/35/55 so they could sell their nexvg.
Dulaney Ward

12 months ago |I actually think Sony hates me
One thing I learned is that big companies still dind’t fully understand that Inetrnet changed completely the way of doing marketing. They will probably think that I am not doing anything good for them. I think the exact opposite of course
Gunnar
12 months ago |if sony marketing hates you, then its definatly time sony fires some of its marketing guys, as far as i see it they dont do much anyways
the success of the NEX is purely up to the awesome product and happy buyers spreading the word but not at all due to marketing.
Bazis007
12 months ago |I think you do much more, that their marketing department. Your site help keep my atention on sony production. And if your site is not provide me news,i did not plan to buy A77, ant go to canon.

12 months ago |I think Sony learned hard how to treat people on the internet after what happened with the PSN. Hahahaha
Jill Kreole
12 months ago |No 24p video?
That must be a mistake. Sony is aware that they lost a55 sales because of that omission. No way they would make that mistake again.
Strange. I don’t really believe some of these specs.
Gunnar
12 months ago |are you stil hoping for pro video features in a Sony non-video cam? i`m sure that`ll never happen.. unless someone hacks the Sony firmware and unlocks the true potential in that awesome hardware.
B2
12 months ago |I’m a bit sceptical about this design. For the first glance it looks like due positionable LCD there are no keys on the left side of the body so hopefully function keys are located on the right side smart enough. Let’s see. BTW – isn’t it competing with 60D rather than 7D? Can’t wait for further pics!
knurd
12 months ago |Or it’s touch screen?
Gunnar
12 months ago |well that would be something
B2
11 months ago |That would actually make sense however I believe we would be better of having function keys as one can change settings faster and without looking at the screen. Or maybe it will be something really user friendly and innovative, let’s hope so..

12 months ago |Is it just me or does the LCD arm on the A77 look odd? What is that little thing 3/4 the way up on the left side of the camera? Also appears that there maybe some photoshop on the section behind the LCD. Maybe Im looking to close or the IQ is low.

12 months ago |This might be a dumb question, but I’m wondering if the “legacy” A-Mount APS-C lenses will work with a new 24mp sensor. I assume it will if the sensor is APS-C, but there are other issues with some A-Mount glass and the SLT55.
Comments?
Stewe
12 months ago |The only issues i heard was problems with some sigma lenses. And the only problem with 24mp sensor will be difraction.

12 months ago |There would be no point of having NEX if it had A-mount. For A-mount lenses to work on NEX it has to be as think as a DSLR and then lenses will not be any smaller than DSLR lenses – so why bother with the NEX then?
Raul S.
12 months ago |+1. E-mount were made from scratch to get rid of the flange to sensor distance…making a NEX with A-mount means a huge empty chamber between the lens and the sensor taking space for nothing good.

12 months ago |Sorry to be a bit negative, but we’ll probably see the same 24Mp sensor in the Nikon D400 with absolutely outstanding high ISO performance since they won’t have the semi-transparent mirror in place.

12 months ago |Would not be that sure that Nikon can use that sensor.
Gunnar
12 months ago |it´ll be the same or even less difference as the A55 to A580. which is mostly subjective. considering all the pros of the SLT i´d leave that discussion to the pixelpeepers

12 months ago |And the Nikon one will also have an awesome AF system. The 11 points from Sony are a joke.
Dulaney Ward
12 months ago |mmm, I’ll see whether you’re still laughing when we find out how well the AF on the A77 works.
ageha
12 months ago |For my kind of work 11 will never be better than 51.
You got it wrong, I’m not even laughing now. I was hoping I can keep my Sony lenses.
The Lotus Eater
12 months ago |Can’t you read? It says “11 cross AF points”. It could have considerably more focus points in total.
To put this into context, the A55/A580 has 3 cross-type AF points (15 in total), while the Nikon D7000 has 9 cross-type AF points (39 in total).
Think/read more carefully before you get your panties in a twist.

Thanks for an awesome site!
admin

Niklas
12 months ago |Thanks for the quick reply!
If you hear anything about the size I’d be very thankfull if you posted it. I’m sure there’s a lot of A700 owners that don’t want smaller bodies (myself included), but the trend for the SLT cameras has been to make them as small as possible. Hopefully Sony knows that the semi-pros want a nice big grip (well, most of us anyway).
MONROE
12 months ago |Finally!! This marks the end of Cannikon lol. Any news on the A77 Vertical Grip? I dont see it in the image so i hope its still bieng produced.

12 months ago |It will be very VERY, super very interesting to see what video recording limitations that Sony places on this camera too protect it’s camcorder sales. (Handycam as well as Pro division)
Will they allow it to have Zebras and Peaking? (like the NEX5 but NOT the VG-10)
Will it have a 20min time limit?
Will it have true 24P?
I can only imagine the internal Sony fighting that is going on this very moment between the departments!! Handycam groups vs. Pro Division vs. Alpha production teams! Wooooo Weeee! I bet it’s UGLY!
RichT
12 months ago |Hmm, those might go on the wishlist for the VG-10 replacement but for an SLT, mmm, methinks Sony wants to keep their product lines well distinguished; keeping video specs within shooting distance of Canon (mainly manual controls and 720/60p) is probably all they’re aiming for. I was kind of hoping they might do 1080/60p given their recent releases of compacts. Am also hoping for an improvement in video resolution, right now it’s not much better than Canon’s video routine (both do it OK now but neither are great and both are getting schooled by Panasonic on how to do it right)

12 months ago |What about twin control dials – is that the edge of a front dial showing on the A65
If LCD, EVF and control dials are the same, and only difference is body and top LCD plate I might jump either way…but my guess is A77 will have a few more differences over the A65.
Any thoughts Andrea?

12 months ago |For those asking about the size of the a77 vs the a700, I put together a composite image overlaying the a77 translucent prototype over the a700. When you line up the lens mount openings you see that the a77 is pretty much identical in size to the a700.
Andrea posted the overlay I sent him a couple months ago.
I own an a700, so I am VERY happy that the new a77 will not be smaller.
Ren
12 months ago |Here’s a link to the picture that someone put in their Flickr account…
http://www.flickr.com/photos/48373829@N02/5546142589/sizes/l/in/photostream/
Now, keep in mind that the photo of the a77 was taken at a slightly different angle than the a700, so the you see a bit more of the top of the a77 (notice the difference in the dials), so the a77 APPEARS to be taller than the a700. If the two photos that were overlayed had been taken from the exact same angle the two cameras would definitely be pretty much identical in height, just as they are basically identical in width.
Ren
Simon_P
12 months ago |Thanks for sharing us the good news. I just want to share my personal view:
If A65 is identical in image quality, and the only difference is just the magnesium alloy body and top info display, who else will get A77? (given we are using EVF, and all info should be shown on EVF/LCD)
Will A65 keep the dual jog dial?
Will there be any improvement of the translucent mirror? A3 and A5 series one reflects 1/3 of light to the AF module, will there be less for A6 and A7?
In terms of image quality, if Nex 7 share the same piece of sensor, can we assume its image quality is even better than A77 given the absence of the mirror?
Ren
12 months ago |I would still buy the a77.
First, the chassis is tougher, and as someone who uses his camera to earn a living, a more rugged camera is worth the extra cost.
Second, it looks to me like the a65 is smaller than the a77, so that’s a definite deal breaker for me. Also, I can’t tell for sure from the photo, but I am not seeing a bulge on the back corner of the a65, which means it doesn’t have the second control wheel. Another deal breaker.

I hate that it will come in fall when my picture-taking urgs are almost at their weakest, but I will be thrilled to get it nonetheless whenever I can. Almost seems like a perfect camera. I do wonder about manual controls and no limitations when shooting video and f-stops during high speed captures – weaknesses of the A55 – do we know about that yet?

12 months ago |Wait, the LCD wishbone-hinge thingy looks like something that can poke your eye (horizontal bar below LCD), say if you want to look closer to LCD to check-out some details. Can’t be sure with just 1 picture, but the protruding part looks sharp to me.
I hope this is not the production model of the hinge. It doesn’t seem to serve any purpose to leave the horizontal bar stationary, while the LCD rotates.

3-CMOS it would be amazing! (even if price is $1000+)
