What Thom Hogan thinks about Sony…
Thom Hogan analyzed the new Photokina products and that’s what he said about Sony:
“Sony: Sony announced most of their wad well prior to the show, with the A560 and A580 being the most recent announcements. I think the jury is still out on Pellicle Round 2, but I like that the Minolta, uh, excuse me, Sony, engineers are still trying to push the box into another shape. NEX dominated their booth, as it probably should. I was heartened to hear that Sony will coming out with a firmware update to address many of we users’ complaints about the user interface, but it’s unclear exactly what is changing other than some video changes. At least they heard the complaints, which is more than I can say for some Japanese camera companies.“

3 years ago |But Sony is a pretty unimportant player in serious DSLR BUSINESS – consumer level, different story maybe .

3 years ago |Nope, not really. Especially since he still insists that Nikon makes everything alone, including D7000 sensor, LOL

3 years ago |I actually think his articles are pretty nuetral considering he is a big Nikon guy and I think gets paid by them to review their stuff. Especially compared to guys like ken rockwell.

3 years ago |Me too, there is nothing bad about Sony in his article, it’s the opposite : “Even more exciting, it’s thrilling to see Sony finding its mojo again, introducing radical new design ideas that, in this case, really advance the state of the art.” Perhaps CaNikon supports fan are quite scared about Sony
Sony innovate (Very smal APS-C NEX camera, translucent technologie), but CaNikon (and Pentax too) stays with traditionnal OVF camera, just putting more megapixel, or some new video mode, or some new triks every 6month in a “new” camera. I excited about Sony (and Samsung) camera, they boldy go where no one has gone before

In this sense, he’s praising Sony (even though the comments in this site won’t agree with him)

3 years ago |Thom is generally very fair, to be honest I do kind of care what he thinks because unlike many, he actually thinks. I think his biggest problem is that as a self acknowledged Nikon guy:
1. he simply knows far more about nikon so writes more expansively on them conversely he isnt that motivated to seek out (or see interest in) the Sony stories.
2. we read him looking for bias.
Having said that, if you read him over time I think I can see that he has become a little disenchanted (as have we) with Sony’s lack of progress. As this article implies. A little more mojo and we’ll see a sunnier outlook.
Frankly I’m a little more concerned with his casual generalisations concerning the japanese but thats another story.
