At Sony A7rIII presentation in new York Sony displayed these images about the US market:

1) Between January and September of 2017 they claimed the second position on the Full Frame market. With the first position likely to be held by Canon and the third position by Nikon.
2) Sony lens sales are up 56% YoY (Year-on-Year) (Jan-Sep 2017 vs Jan-Sep 2016) by value compared to a flat market.
3) Sony Full Frame (35mm) camera sales are up 57% YoY by value, compared to the rest of the market being down 7%.

And at the Sony A7rIII event in Tokyo Sony said the samething for the Japanese market (Source DC.watch):

1) Sony owns 29% market share of the FF system camera market in Japan. That makes place two behind Canon
2) They have a market share of 18% on the overall system camera market in Japan

Sony also announced the new “Imaging Edge” Software Suite

Sony also announced a new “Imaging Edge2 Software suite that will be soon available here: support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/ie/en/. Sony writes:

“New with the α7R III is a software suite called “Imaging Edge” that extends the creative capabilities of the entire shooting process – from pre-processing to post-processing.  “Imaging Edge” provides three PC applications called ‘Remote’, ‘Viewer’ and ‘Edit’, available for free download, which support live-view PC remote shooting and RAW development.”

Alin Popescu had the chance to shortly see the new software and writes:

Imaging Edge provides three applications called ‘Remote’, ‘Viewer’ and ‘Edit’, that will be available for free download, which will support live-view remote shooting and RAW development. Also Edit will take care of the Pixel Shift Technology.

We’ve seen a pre-beta version of the software and I was curious about the Viewer capability to sort images fast, something similar to Photo Mechanic. Good news is that we don’t need to import a folder to select and rate photos. The bad is that we’ve seen it on a slow laptop and I can’t make a guess on how fast this software will be.

On Remote I’ve been attracted to the Manual Focusing feature: you have some controls on software with minor and major movement of focusing, directly from the computer. Lenses with Piezoelectric focusing motors, will be as precise as 1/1000 mm incremental movements. Add this to the magnified focusing and 42 mpx of resolution and you’re going to be the most precise photographer in focusing :).

Sony now more popular than Nikon at Lensrentals

Sony FF sales in Jan&Feb

LensRentals reports that Sony passed Nikon at the largest online camera gear rental business in the US.  Fstoppers made this resume of the key findings:

  • Canon lenses were far and away the most popular, taking up 9 of the top 10 spots, with the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM coming in at 5th and the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II being the most popular overall, while the Canon 50mm f/1.2L was the most popular prime and 6th most popular overall. The first Nikon entry on the list was the 70-200mm f/2.8G AF-S VR II at 11th.
  • Sony is now a more popular rental brand than Nikon.
  • Sigma continues to gain ground, having become 20 percent more popular than in 2016. Fuji lenses skyrocketed, showing 96 percent more rentals. Sony lenses also increased 22 percent, while Canon and Nikon decreased 8 and 10 percent, respectively.
  • Nonetheless, Canon remains the most popular system at 37 percent, with the Sony E mount coming in second at 13 percent.
