Former Nikon PRO photographer Sporsheim says: “Sony are circling around Nikon’s camera division like a shark in the water smelling blood”

A7rII vs D810 by CameraSize

Our reader Mistral pointed me to a quite extravagant discussion:

Kenneth Sporsheim is a Norwegian photographer, former Nikon PRO photographer, current Pentax ambassador. His alias on various fora is kenspo. This is what he wrote on Pentax Forums:

“Nikon are bleeding most of all camera brands at the moment! They have lay-offs in many countries. Just here in Norway, they had to reduce staff from 13 to 3..and get rid of locations and have office at home. This is how things are behind the numbers on the paper “

And now the juicy part:

“Its a big and hard ship to turn when things starting to go wrong  I know for a fact that Sony are circling around Nikon’s camera division like a shark in the water smelling blood. Its info from the “inside”. But how serious it is for Sony, i can’t tell. Just know that they have been looking at this possibility. Haven’t updated me for a while either

UPDATE:  “Looking at this possibility” of doing what? Kennet Sporsheim now made clear he didn’t mean Sony is considering acquiring Nikon. Thom Hogan reports

The Nikon Ambassador quoted in the “rumor” has contacted me and says that what he meant by his shark quote is that Sony believes that they can take market share away from Nikon while Nikon is floundering (to keep the fish metaphor alive ;~).

Thanks Mistral!

Sony Q2 financial report: Sales and profit decrease because of strong YEN and Kumamoto damage

q2_sony

Sony published their full Q2 financial reports. Sales and operating income went down for both the company as a whole and the imaging business. The main reason is the strong YEN and the Kumamoto earthquake damage. Still despite the odds Sony still managed to make some profit in Q2.

The good news is that Sony revised upwards the forecast for the full 2016 year:

Sales are expected to be higher than the July forecast due to a faster-than-expected recovery in the supply of components and shipments of Still and Video Cameras which were impacted by the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquakes, as well as a shift to high value-added models. Operating in come is expected to be higher than the July forecast mainly due to the above-mentioned increase in sales.
Let’s hope this means we don’t have to wait too long to get our hands on the new generation A7 cameras :)
