New A7rII tests: Minor Miracle on wide angle M-mount lenses. How to avoid 12 bit shooting.

A very first fully detailed A7rII review has been posted by Mobile01. It’s not in English but there are plenty of pictures and tests you can check.

First impressions by DearSusans:

A minor miracle appears to have occurred in that two of my favourite M lenses – the 18mm Super Elmar and 24mm Elmar – appear to show no colour fringing, whereas they were simply awful on the original A7. The 18mm Super Elmar and 24mm Elmar still have some problems (vignetting and softness at the edges) but are much, much better than they were on the A7r1. I would think anything from 35mm on will perform well.

RX100m4 is a dream for videographer and has surprising RAW files too. New Nauticam housing announced.

Jordan from Thecamerastoretv team reviewed the Sony RX100 IV. And in very short he claims this is the best pocketable camera you can get, a dream for videographer and what’s more surprising is that the RAW files show a huge(!) dynamic range improvement you don’t see on the normal JPG files.

And Nauticam announced the new RX100m4 housing. It costs $995 and it will ship…now!

A7s vs A7rII low light battle. 40 year Hasselblad shooter sells everything and buys the A7rII.

Image of the A7rII vs A7s by Cinema5D.

Cinema5D posted a A7s vs A7rII ISO (video) comparison (on vimeo here). They write:

– The Sony A7RII is good in terms of lowlight and certainly very good in comparison to many other 4K cameras out there.
– The noise floor of the Sony A7RII vs A7s seems similar, but the footage is cleaner on the Sony A7s.
– In terms of detail the Sony A7s can retain usable quality up into high ISO’s while the Sony A7RII lacks detail much sooner. We start to notice this in the shadow areas around 6,400-10,000 ISO. Shadow areas get washed out and become less usable even on an HD downconversion that we compare to the Sony A7s original as seen in the video above.

A 40 year long Hasselblad photographer finally sells everything to buy the Sony A7rII (SonyAlphaForum).
Richard Banton posted a full A7rII ISO range test shoooting on Flickr and on his blog rickybanphotography.com.

New A7rII videos (Newsshooter 5-axis test)

Newsshooter tested the A7rII 5 axis system:

In short the 5-axis stabilisation worked a treat. As long as I was relatively steady the system kicked in and provided the extra bit of stability I needed. I found I could move very quickly between shots and get results that looked they had been shot using a shoulder rig.

BBC camera man Johnnie Behiri posted the A7rII first impression review from a film makers point of view on Cinema5D. And he simply say:

Let me summarise it for you in two sentences:
– Sell your A7s (or any other photo camera that shoots video you currently have)
– Buy the new Sony A7rII ….

LOL :)
For him the A7rII “is currently the best photo camera that shoots video in the market“. Here is a video he shot with the A7rII:

New Batis lens test by Cinema5D (great video), Popphoto, Saihati and Miguel Quiles.

“Those Goddamn Hippies” – DRIFT – Music Video – ZEISS Batis Review
from Nino Leitner on Vimeo.

And Nino Leitner from Cinema5D posted that great video shot with the new Batis lenses and writes:

The Batis lenses should be considered by video shooters who need a very lightweight option on their E-Mount cameras, who don’t work with a focus puller or focus marks, or who own a gimbal like a MoVi M5 or DJI Ronin, as the low weight is perfect for these devices. Photographers who shoot on E-Mount cameras like the A7 series should get the Batis lenses if they are looking for decent autofocus, low weight and a very sexy new kind of bokeh. It goes without saying that these lenses are extremely sharp, which is usually ZEISS’s top priority when designing lenses. They are certainly not as sharp as the OTUS line, but they also come in in a different price bracket!

Popphoto posted a short Batis lens hands-on report:

In terms of sharpness, my eyeball tests suggests what you might already suspect: When you get the focus right, both lenses are extremely sharp, even under scrutiny available thanks to the A7r’s big resolution. The bokeh on both lenses is nice and smooth, with round specular highlights thanks to the circular aperture.

Miguel Quiles shot a BTS video for Rangefinder Magazine using the new Batis 85 and the A7II: youtube.com/watch?v=sMaX6gAH4FM

Newsshooter tests the A7rII with the Batis lenses.

Our friends over at Newsshhooter (Click here) posted a short test of the new Sony A7rII with the Batis and Touit lenses. They were of course focused on the video performance of the camera:

I tried shooting a couple of test shots at ISO 5000 which I expected to be pretty unusable. It turns out that they were much better than I thought and you can see them at the end of the video. The high ISO performance might not match the a7S, but it is much better than several other ‘professional’ large sensor camcorders and for many people I think it will be good enough.
