All the wild rumors I got about the new Sony camera announcement…

UPDATE: Sony A1 announced! Preorders:
In USA at BHphoto. Adorama.
In Europe at FotoErhardt DE. Fotokoch. Park UK.
They also announced the Xperia PRO 5G available at BHphoto.

Reminder: The only message I got from a usually solid source is that he “heard” there is a new RX curved sensor camera. But he told me he is unsure if this is the camera that will be announced tomorrow or if it might be announced in another event.

The super wild rumors:
I got four anonymous messages about the new camera that Sony will announced on January 26. In all four cases these are anonymous sources that yet have no past of rumors shared correctly. So please all four sources shouldn’t be offended if I rank their rumors very low. Only if they rumor turn out to be correct I can “use” their secret nicknames they gave me to post their future rumors as solid sourced info:

Source 1:

Imx 435 will makes its way into the new A9 iii camera to be released tomorrow. A true hybrid powerhouse. 36mp, 8k60p, 4K 120, 30fps photos with fast AF. Hexaconversion gain allows for amazing low light ability and extremely clean imagery at most ISO’s. All conversion gain readout at base iso allows for 17+ stops of Dynamic range. The pinnacle of imaging on an exmore sensor… More soon…

Source 2:

A1
50Mpx
10.000 USD

Source 3:

the picture showed a couple of days ago is fake the camera is bigger a true pro body.

Source 4:

Body available late March.

Also keep in mind: All four info might as well be wrong. The trusted sources I know still didn’t spill out a single word…also because only veeeery few know about the camera and they don’t want to be spoiled.

P.S: Source 2 info really makes little sense…..$10,000 for a FF camera? On the other hand it would be “the one” in the sense of “A1” :)

RUMOR: The camera to be announced tomorrow has the code “CX88500”. Still gives no clue about what it might be…

UPDATE: Sony A1 announced! Preorders:
In USA at BHphoto. Adorama.
In Europe at FotoErhardt DE. Fotokoch. Park UK.
They also announced the Xperia PRO 5G available at BHphoto.

Nokishita reports:

The camera to be announced tomorrow seems to be a model with the code name CX88500 (CX88200 is α9II, CX88300 is α6600, CX88400 is α6100, CX88600 is α7C, CX85000 is α7SIII).

While this might lead to believe that this is an E-mount camera we really cannot be sure of this. With “never seen” Sony really promises BIG. Technically speaking an A9III 8K camera wouldn’t be “unseen” but maybe they mean “unseen in th Alpha segment”.

RUMOR: There is a chance Sony will announce a curved sensor RX Full Frame camera on Tuesday!

Unlike the previous Sony A7sIII and A7c announcements Sony is having a very “close” announcement. Only Sony Tokyo knows about this “new mysterious announcement”.

I now got contacted by a trusted long time source. This time he told me that he didn’t see the new camera…and all he got was unofficial chatter. So this time he cant be sure about the validity of the info he got. But what he heard is this:

  1. On Tuesday Sony will launch a new RX camera with the world’s first Full frame curved sensor. This is why Sony teases it with “The one never seen”
  2. It uses a lens that is faster than the Sony RX1RII (which has a Zeiss 35mm f/2.0 lens).

What he is 100% sure about is that Sony will have many more camera announcements this year (including one camera announcement to follow soon after January 26). We know Sony registered three new camera codes in Asia and I expect A9III (or whatever name will be) and the A7IV to follow this RX announcement (If the RX rumor is true).

FAKE LEAK? First A9III image and specs

I am absolutely unsure if this image and specs are the real deal. I guess there is big chance it is fake because I got it from an anonymous message. The image shows a new A9 camera (top dials are same as A9II) with the new back of the A7sIII. The only real difference from a simple A7sIII+A9II collage image is that the supposedly A9III back has a Sony logo under the fully articulating screen (which the A7sIII has not).

The source also wrote this:

It will be called a9 III, sure, this model “replaces” current a9 models.
Under 50MP, but enough for 8k and a little record for virtual OSS. They can’t just put lots of MPx because it compromises the fast read out, for sure this camera uses a new RS sensor.
Lots of a7siii modes, but not all, and also not the bitrate that a7siii have.
Not more than 20fps, but it performs upto 20fps 14bit.
Uses CFexpress A and uhs-2 (dual) same as a7siii
Foldable screen
And more obvius things like, same evf, processor…

All we know for sure is that Sony wants to announce something “unseen” on January 26. An 8K A9III would certainly fit this description. On away more fantasy note also the officially Sony patented medium format cameras with curved sensors would be certainly  “unseen” :)

Sony teases a super Alpha event on January 26! It’s a camera “never seen”…..likely the new A9 8K camera?

Hurray! Sony just launched the new teaser for a new Alpha announcementThe one never seen“. So its the new A9III with 8k sensor?

Rumored Sony A9III specs:

  • Sony will launch a new High End camera in Q1 2021.
  • It will be named as an A9x series camera and not A7x (not sure if it’s “A9s” or “A9III”)
  • It has a new ~50 megapixel sensor
  • 8k30p video confirmed with no overheating. It’s still an “infant” 8k mode…meaning it’s not 8k60 which would be crazy and there will be limitations in the quality you can record internally.
  • Other specs similar to A7sIII (EVF, autofocus, and so forth)
  • At least $1,500 more expensive than the EOS-R5 (but price hasn’t be finalized yet) Expect something like $4,999.

The sources will try to give me some more hints the coming weeks…stay tuned on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and chat with me live on Discord to not miss any rumors!
