The “unofficial talk” on the Digital Splash show: Tamron ceased A-mount lens development and will make E-mount lenses only?

A SAR reader reported to me the unofficial talk he collected on the Digital Splash show. While this is just unofficial chatter it’s still interesting to know what managers are spilling out on those kind of events:

News I took from sony at digital splash:
The people at the sony stand told me either sony is workig to get E mount lens line up to rival A mount selection before making more A mount lenses or the person said, it is possible no more lenses will be made but cameras will definately continue to be developped atleast for the next couple of years.
Tamron….it is with a very heavy heart that tamron have now ceased all future A mount lens development and instead are shifting focus to E mount and fuji mount, the price of A mount for some reason has shot up in recent times which paired with the shrinking A mount market share has led them the call it a day, all recent releases will be fullfilled up untill a certain point which wasn’t specified.
After having lengthy discussions with tamron through this year, it is looking more likely we will see sports/wildlife primes in the medium distant future(2-4 years) specifically 600mm f4 and 400mm f2.8.
The only lens maker currently actively developing new A mount lenses is venus optics via the Laowa lenses line.
Sad day, but i did try the A9, it is a nice camera, controls are fiddly coming from an a99ii, my fingers still get wedged between grip and lens neck so it would be great to see a slightly fattened out version of the A9, possibly with an a99ii style body but with E mount lens system.
Af on the a9 is shockingly good, even in a dimly lit room using the 24-70gm it picked focus almost instantly from infinity to near subject.
C’mon sony, make a 45mp 14fps A9r and let me finally lose the mirror.
As a funny end note, the display version of the A mount 500mm f4 that is used for shows and events was broken during a recent event, a man was changing lenses and instead of break his own gear he let the 500mm f4 go for the sake of saving his camera and lens.

Tamron only has one native E-mount lens in their lineup. The Tamron 18-200mm at [shopcountry 62789].

Is Sonys a9 sensor being used for both the new Venice and the future A7sIII?

The Japanese site Image no-mania (a sensor guru blog) thinks A9 sensor is nearly the same used by the new VENICE camcorder. That means the α9 sensor potentially can do 4k60fps or 6k24fps. If (again a big if) the new A7sIII (or a9s) has this sensor we can expect it to record 4k 60fps.
Note: Before you start saying that the A9 video features have been crippled down by Sony. While the sensor might be capable of 4K60fps you would need the processor to be designed to be a video workhorse. And you have to design the body in a way to avoid quick overheating.

Speculating about the possible A7sIII specs

On October 18 (+1 or -1 day) Sony will announce a new camera. Of that I am 1000% sure. And the chances are good that this might be the new A7sIII. All we know from a reliable source is that it has the same A9 PDAF. All the rest is speculation for now.

Dominik Kutrowski from our Sony A7sIII facebook group shared this:

I was on a sony alpha day this weekend. Some employees from Sony were present. One of them told me, that there are rumors about a Sony a9s, that combines the low light caps of the Sony a7s II with the incredible sensor of the Sony a9. There could be also features like 4k60p and a complete new gamma profile. He said that he can’t confirm that properly, but that it’s very possible.

If Dominik info is correct (which we obviously cannot take for granted) this sounds like an A9 camera trimmed for video. If true I hope Sony improved the A9: For example real advanced touchscreen features, two FAST SD card slots, articulating screen and so on.

Anyway, that’s just speculation. What are you hoping to see on the new A7sIII?

(SR4) UPDATED: Sony A7sIII (or A9s). Is it a Full Frame GH5 killer?

Just a rendering of the possible A9s (but it could be named A7sIII)

UPDATE: Sony teased an “exciting camera launch” but we now learned this is for a new camcorder and not an new A7sIII.

Original rumor before the update:

The chances are increasing that we will get a new A7sIII (or A9s). This is the info I just got from three sources:

Source 1 (this was the source whom told me correctly there would be a new RX camera on September 12):

“I heard a7s will have pdaf like the a9”

Source 2 (the source who shared correct announcement date of Sept 12 but was mistaken on the two camera announcement. But he was right many times before):

“After last RX announcement I am not 100% sure about anything, but I am pretty sure that video camera will be first like you wrote today. a9s or a7s3. And that is the surprise I wrote about before last announcement (because your other sources claimed it will be a7 III). Both are in plans but like I said – video camera should be first, a7 III will rather be announced in Q1 2018. And yes, it will be Full Frame GH5 killer!”

Source 3 wrote:

“Sony will announce ILCE7S3 at media in action NAB show.”

I hope to get a few specifics the upcoming hours. But I think we finally know what the “surprise camera” is that we rumored back in September and wasn’t announced along the RX10IV. Join our A7sIII group to further discuss news on this camera:

I have no info if the new 135mm and 400mm FE lenses will be announced at the same event or maybe on another press event in November. Still a bit disappointed to hear the a7III is shipping in Q1. But it seems Sony decided to use their marketing and production resources to go after the Panasonic GH5 first.

Rumor ranking:
I am 100% sure Sony will announce one camera at or around October 18
I am 75% sure this is a new FF E-mount camera and 75% sure this is the A7sIII (or A9s)

(SR5) 100% sure Sony will announce a new camera around October 18. Is it a new A7sIII ???

I am now 100% sure that Sony will announce a new camera right at the Nab showshow. We can expect the announcement to happen around October 18… (+/- 1 day).

While I still have no SR5 rumor about what kind of camera we will get ….I got these two new information you have to take with a grain of salt:

1) Sony A7III to ship in early 2018 (announcement date uncertain). Still rumored to be a 24MP camera with 6fps (mechanical), touchscreen, 4k 30fps and up to 200.000 ISO.

2) The surprise camera we rumored about days ago is the new A7sIII. One source says that this camera is coming at Nabshow. If (big if!) this source is right it probably means Sony wanted to first release a proper GH5 competitor and maybe that’s why the A7III is coming in early 2018 only?
The source also said the features are “big” and the price is “big” too.

The NABshow “Media in action” is something different than the PhotoPlus show which starts on October 25. The Nabshow would be an ideal place for a new A7sIII announcement.

One more thing about SR5 Lens rumors: My trusted sources who shared all correct lens info the past 12 months still say the 135mm and 400m FE lenses (but announcement date unclear). For the record those are the rumors they shared previously and proved to be correct (links to the rumor article):
Sony A9.
100-400mm FE.
85mm FE.
100mm STF.
16-35mm GM
135mm Batis

(SR5) 99,9% sure there is one more Sony announcement within 4-6 weeks

It’s always terribly hard with Sony to know exactly what’s going to be announced. But that little I can tell you for sure: We will get one more announcement within the next 4-6 weeks. I am not sure if the announcement will be made before the Photoplus show in NYC or 2-3 weeks after the event (A7II was announced 3 weeks after the show on Nov 20, 2014).

Following logic and rumors A7III would be mature for an announcement. But also the RX1rII, A5100, RX100 cameras are in need for a replacement. 135mm and 400mm FE lenses are also hot candidates for an announcement.

I hope this time the announcement will be more exciting than the previous one for the RX10mIV.
