(SR5) 99,9% sure there is one more Sony announcement within 4-6 weeks

It’s always terribly hard with Sony to know exactly what’s going to be announced. But that little I can tell you for sure: We will get one more announcement within the next 4-6 weeks. I am not sure if the announcement will be made before the Photoplus show in NYC or 2-3 weeks after the event (A7II was announced 3 weeks after the show on Nov 20, 2014).

Following logic and rumors A7III would be mature for an announcement. But also the RX1rII, A5100, RX100 cameras are in need for a replacement. 135mm and 400mm FE lenses are also hot candidates for an announcement.

I hope this time the announcement will be more exciting than the previous one for the RX10mIV.

Nikon and Canon both going FF mirrorless in 2018. What will be Sony’s reaction?

Both Nikon (rumor here) and Canon (rumor here) are finally going to compete against Sony in the Full Frame mirrorless segment. Both companies should launch their new FF system cameras in 2018 (probably at Photokina in September).

I honestly think Sony is not going to change their camera roadmap release to wait and see how those cameras will look like. We are going to probably see a new A7III and A7rIII before the Nikon and Canon release.

But for sure Nikon and Canon are looking at the weak spots of the Sony system and will try to exploit them. I hope Sony will “prepare” for this and improve a couple of things like:

1) Lower the price on Sony cameras and lenses. Make them more accessible for people to join the E-mount system!
2) Improve on delivering more “mature” software (Example: fix star eater issue bug)
3) Rework the APP system so that third party developers can sell their APP’s
4) Improve the service (still issues in some countries)
5) Add functions that are long available on other camera system like real full touchscreen functionality, real 64 ISO, and so on…
6) Don’t do unnecessary “cuts” on hardware: A9 should have had 2 fast SD slot cards! USB 3.0 should have been long standard too. Improve the focus by wire (which I personally dislike).

It’s time for Sony to really growth up and give a really hard time to Canon and Nikon :)

Sony working on sensors with built-in lens layer

As disclosed by patent JP2016/003349 Sony is working on a sensor with built-in lens structure array. This would allow Sony to make very thin cameras ideal for mobile devices and the automotive industry. But in the future this could become an interesting application for larger sensor fixed lens cameras too.

(SR3) Sony will launch a new 20mm f/2.8 FE lens?

Image on top shows the current 20mm f/2.8 A-mount lens

The following info is from a source whom shared a few correct info in the past.

He told me that Sony will launch a new 20mm f/2.8 Full Frame E-mount later this year. This will be part of the affordable FE lens series from Sony like the 50mm f/1.8 FE and 28mm f/2.0 FE. It will become a relatively compact lens like the 20mm A-mount version.

Quick FEreminder: 135mm and 400mm FE lenses are on Sony’s announcement roadmap too.

(SR5) First Sigma FE lens launch postponed to February. Good news is that full range of primes is in development!

Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 and the Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 via Camerasize

The very same source whom shared the 100% correct ART prime lens rumor roadmap (read here) and leaked to us images too (read here) shared some new info about the future Sigma FE lens line. The bad news is that the launch of the first lens got delayed from end 2017 to very early 2018:

I got some sigma news this morning. The line up should arrive in February next year. The lenses should be the same focal length as the actual line up. 14mm, 24mm, 35mm, 85mm and 135mm. A new 70-200 is arriving in October… but no Sony mount

This is a very solid source so I am 99% certain he is right on this. The good news is that Sigma plans to release al very long list of new primes. I am loving this! The first one will be the 35mm f/1.4 as we “rumored” many months ago.

P.S.: Another Bad news: The new 70-200mm lens will not be available for A-mount :(
