Canon 6D vs Sony A9 via CameraSize

If you were wondering when Canon will start to fight back Sony on the mirrorless front well the answer may surprises you:

First of all: As rumored before on CanonWatch Canon will stick to EF mount on their upcoming mirrorless cameras. This is a surprising conservative move. It will of course allow them to NOT have to launch a whole set of new lenses with a new mount. Probably by now Canon would have a hard time to catch up with the Sony FE lens system anyway.

Second: The first Canon Full Frame Mirroless EF mount camera is rumored to be launched in late 2018 only.

Really don’t know what to think about this….

Stay tuned, I got a small hint about a new FE lens announcement today. Still not confirmed via trusted sources so for now 50% chance this is true….I will update you within minutes…

UPDATE: At a Sony event in China some info spilled out about a new “unexpected” FE lenses that will be announced soon. The source wrote:

There will be another lens announced with the long-expected 1635GM in very near future. It will have VERY surprising parameters, not the rumored 135mm, nor has it ever been rumored.

I updated the rumor level from SR2 to SR3 as it seems like Sony did really hint this info to the journalists present at the event. There are three sources:

1) The one who post this rumor is the Chinese version of Lensrental, the biggest one in China on equipment rental/review

2) The second one is a camera/lens dealer, small scale though

3) The third guy is a famous editor and photographer in a Camera review website which also has a lot of connection with Sony. They got prototypes from Sony all the time and are playing with A9 right now… And he’s the one who claimed to have seen the photo of the new lenses.

Yesterday a trusted source confirmed both the 16-35mm f/2.8 GM and the 135mm FE lens are due to be launched this year. Today a new source shared few more details that I think could be correct:

There’s almost no chance the new 135 GM will be anounced together with 16-35 GM. The zoom is ready right now and the 135 is still being developed. We are pretty sure we will have to wait AT LEAST 3 months.

What is almost sure for about FE 135 GM:
– lack of stabilization
– weather sealed
– aperture is still a question but for now we can say it will be f/1.8 for 80% chance. There were ideas that it should be even f/1.4 as the target of the new lens is to be a killer for other portrait lenses but PERSONALLY I don’t give big chances on that. The value of f/2.0 is rather impossible.

Batis 135mm f/2.8 vs the [shoplink 48572]Zeiss 135mm f/1.8 A-mount[/shoplink] (CameraSize).

Last week we reported about a possible imminent announcement of the 16-35mm FE GM lens and another 135mm FE lens. Well today a trusted source confirmed two lenses are coming:

“Like 16-35mm f2.8 GM and 135mm portrait lens.”

So still no info on the aperture of the 135mm lens but it will be faster than the newly announced Batis 135mm f/2.8. Sony is expected to announced the 16-35mm GM lens between late May and June. I don’t know if the 135mm FE will be announced together with the 16-35mm GM or sometimes later.

An early tester of the new Sony A9 sent me this:

Today I had the opportunity take a sneak peek at the Sony A9, and while checking the menu there’s a 8K VIDEO option but it’s disabled in the camera, when I asked more about this option the Sony representative took the camera away and noted that it could have been a pre-production error.

Of course the Sony A9 is not capable to record 8K because that would require at least a 33 megapixel sensor. But we know the new menu is going to be used in all future A7 and A9 cameras. So it might be that the A7sIII or A7rIII will have a 33MP sensor with 8K recording? My bet is that the A7rIII would be perfectly suited for such an option. That said I doubt we really need 8K video yet!
