Sony Manager Mark Weir talks at IR (and explains why NEX will never have in body IS).

Sony Manager Mark Weir has been interviewed by Imaging Resource (full article here). There is no talk about the future products and just some minor info like:

– RX1 Demand has been very strong.
– To create a universal RAW file that all sensor manufacturers would adhere to may limit the opportunities of what we can be achieved.
– Sony has received requests to be able to set JPEG compression while shooting RAW plus JPEG and they are aware of that request.
– “The decision to use optical-shift instead of sensor-shift in NEX cameras was based on the intention to miniaturize the camera body. And if you look at the size of NEX, particularly from in the depth dimension, you can see that with 18 mm from flange to sensor and then there’s very little room from the sensor to the back of the camera, yes, there just wasn’t room.

it was obvious NEX would never have n sensor stabilization but know you hear it officially from a Sony manager.

(SR5) A58, NEX-3N, and three A-mount lens to come soon!

Sources from SAR and Digicaminfo got the same info about the upcoming release:

In very last moment it looks like Sony decided to drop the A38 and just release the A58! And this is what Sony will announce soon:

  • SLT-A58 with a new 20MP sensor (actually it’s 20,xx and almost close to 21 Megapixels). Priced around 600-700 dollars/euro.
  • NEX-3N, 16Megapixel sensor (same as F3) priced at 500-600 dollars/euro
  • Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 for 1600-1700 dollars/euro
  • 18-55mm II  for A mount at around 200-300 dollars/euro
  • 70-400G F4.5-5.6 II 2400-2500 dollars/euro (to ship in April!)

And a smart SAR reader found the evidence for the new 70-400mm in the latest firmware: “Looks like SAL-70400G2 is ready for release, fw for a99 contains the lens correction profile for that lens. This profile is identical to the profile for the known SAL-70400G, so no changes in optical formula. LensID is 69, “old” one has LensID 53. No such lens profiles for rumored SAL-70200G2 or announced SAL-50F14Z yet.

Stay tuned on SAR!

(SR5) First image of the new NEX-3n!!!

As you know on February 20th Sony will announce the new Playstation 4. I am still not sure yet but there are “signs” that Sony may will “use” the huge interest created for that event to introduce new Sony cameras too. And one more evidence supporting this rumor is the first leaked image of the upcoming new NEX-3n we just got via an anonymous source. We have been told that it will share the same 16 Megapixel sensor of the current (and yet discounted) NEX-F3. The one major difference you can see on the image where there is a zoom control button that will electronically drive the 16-50mm PZ and the newly announced 18-200mm PZ lens. No other specs are yet known.

One more thing: The other cameras Sony will announce soon are the SLT-A38 and SLT-A58 But we can’t confirm yet if they will be announced in late February or in early April (there will be another announcement by than before the NAB show). No SLT-FF cameras are coming this year as Sony decided to focus their efforts on the NEX-FF development.

(SR4) Sony photo product announcement on February 20th?

I told you the real new camera and lens stuff from Sony is coming soon and after all the big CES and CP+ show. I just got an email saying that a new announcement may be scheduled for February 20th. New NEX-3n, new SLT A38 (and maybe the A58 too) could be announced. I am investigating this and ask my sources if they can confirm the rumor. Thanks!

UPDATE: One new anonymous source confirmed the date. Other sources confirmed there is indeed a camera announcement to come soon.

(SR5) Bigger announcements coming in March-April. And the three SLT models will be…

Hi!

CES and CP+ shows are over and ironically it is now that rumors will get more interetsing. Major announcements are schedule for March-April and as I told you Sony will start from the bottom entry level stuff and announce more advanced stuff in summer and autumn. For now I can confirm that three SLT models will be announced this year, the first will be the A38, followed by the A58 (both in March-April). And the second half of the year will bring us the new A78. The lenses to come will be the 50mm Zeiss, the 70-200mm, the 70-400mm and a new 18-135mm DT lens.

Soon to come on SAR is a NEX rumors. So stay tuned! Don’t miss any rumor and subscribe the RSS feed (Click here) and Twitter (Click here) stream and the Facebook fan page (Click here)!

(SR2) Zeiss SSM f/1.4 to be priced a little bit above $1,500?

An anonymous source (Thanks a lot!) just shared a new info about the new Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 SSM lens. He said the lens price will be a tiny bit over $1,500! This is double the price of the manual Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 lens that is available for Canon or Nikon mount (here at amazon). But of course this lens has AF, SSM and is weather sealed!

Now, as I told you this is from one anonymous source and the info may not be correct. But, let’s imagine that is the real final price:

Should Sony stick to the classic A7x-A6xxx design or also try to do something else?

Hot! New Sony E-mount roadmap.

Dear Japanese readers! We really need your help on this! The image on top shows the new Sony E-mount roadmap info that has been just posted by Sony Japan. It says that from now on we can expect Sony to release a minimum of five new E-mount lenses every year. And this year one Zeiss and one G lens will come too. By the way, let’s not forget that three “extra” Zeiss primes designed for Sony E-mount and Fuji X mount will come too!

And yes, there is no sign at all of a possible A-mount roadmap :(

Thanks all the super fast and gentle SAR readers that helped me to translate this!
