Sony expects significant decrease of digital camera sales due the earthquake damage at Kumamoto

Sony released their forecast report which includes the Kumamoto damage estimation. And we have bad news to report:

  1. Sony estimated the impact from the quake on its image sensor and digital camera operations would total 105 billion yen this business year.
  2. Significant decreases in sales of digital cameras and broadcast- and professional-use products, including sales decrease resulting from a delay in the supply of components due to 2016 Kumamoto earthquake.
  3. In addition, Sony decided to terminate the development and manufacturing of high-functionality camera modules for external sale, the mass production of which was being prepared at the Kumamoto Technology Center, as a result of a reconsideration of the strategy of this business from a long-term perspective. Approximately 30 billion yen in expense is expected to be incurred due to this termination.

While we have no solid info yet…I guess that we can expect many Sony cameras like the rumored A99II or A9 to be announced much later than originally planed. Just like it happened with the A68 North America launch that got delayed by over 2 months.

I als wonder what exactly Sony means that they will “terminate the development and manufacturing of high-functionality camera modules for external sale“. Any idea?

This is not an Alpha related news but it may be interesting for some of our readers: A source just sent me this:

Also a successor to the market leading FDR-X1000V will be introduced by appropriate partners and into the market. It will feature improved image quality and video resolution and frame rate.
From what I gathered this can mean the IMX318 Sensor will be used:

(SR4) New rumors about the Sony launch product event in June

Share

This one is a complex rumor: Different sources told me Sony invited people on special meetings in June. Usually that kind of “invitation” happens when there are new products to be alunched. So far so good. But the complexity comes from the recent unexpected events: It’s yet unclear if after the Komamoto desaster Sony will confirm or reduce or even postpone the launch of the new cameras. As you know just recently the A68 got a 2.5 month release delay. Last year Sony announce the a7rII, RX100m4 and RX100 in June.

Now I don’t know exactly what’s coming in June and what’s coming at Photokina. All I know from trusted sources is that a new A9 camera is one the way and also at least one A-mount camera (at last). But of course there is also a chance to see the new A7III and RX100m5. And highly unlikely to happen….the medium format camera.
