Sony manager about the future Cinema Line products: We want to go beyond expectations for the customers!

Share

In an interview published by CineD the leader of the Sony Cinema Line, Nobutatsu Takahashi-san said this about the future of the lineup:

Sometimes it takes time (to release new products) when there is a huge revolutionary change. We still need time to offer something new but we are trying our best. I want to go beyond expectations for the customers

This all sounds promising, but I really hope it won’t take too long. The Sony FX3 is struggling against the newer Canon C50 and Nikon Zr, which are both cheaper and generally perform better. On top of that, there’s still a strong need for proper updates to the FX6 and FX9—but I’m not sure if those will ever come.

Effects of tariffs: Sony A7sIII now sells for $800 more than before!

Share

Back in May, the Sony A7sIII was still selling for $3,198—now it’s up to $3,998. That’s a 25% price hike on a camera that’s already over five years old…pretty remarkable. On the bright side, if you already own an A7sIII, its used value has gone up as well, meaning your camera just got more valuable.

Here’s how the prices have increased in percentage terms from May until today (most expensive cameras on top):

As you can see, some cameras have jumped by as much as 50%! Sony manufactures its top-tier models in Japan, where imports face a 15% tariff. Many entry-level and compact models are built in China (30% tariff), while a number of mid-range cameras come from Thailand (20% tariff).

Some examples on lenses:

The high-end lenses I mentioned are produced in Japan, which is why their price hikes have been relatively moderate. In contrast, lenses manufactured in China have seen much sharper increases:

I do expect some discounts during the holiday season, but looking ahead, it feels like affordability won’t be part of Sony’s strategy anymore. The big question is: once tariffs are factored in, how high will the price of the Sony A7V climb?

Sony A7V sensor, “tweaked” or completely new?

Leaked image of the Sony A7V prototype

After yesterdays video three new “sources” contacted me. Those are not long time trusted sources so I cannot know if they are telling me the truth. But I had the chance to chat with them a bit longer and they seemed to be genuine in their intention. Still, I have been naive before and/or they may got wrong information form their sources. So take it with a grain of salt!

Source 1:

the camera will feature a brand-new sensor

Source 2:

I can assure you that the sensor definitely captured images that had more than 33 Mpix. I 100% believe that the “L:33M” being displayed on screen is entirely a software issue.

Source 3:

I think with 99% confidence the A7IV is going to be stacked/semi stacked with additional video features

I appreciate the effort and thanks for trying to help, but I still cannot tell my readers anything certain about the sensor :(

Another long time reader (Thanks George) wrote this:

I saw your recent videos and posts on the A7V. I understand that the use of the 33mp sensor from Sony seems like a misstep.
Following the investor presentation documents I sent earlier you can see that this development was the likely outcome. Likely, the sensor is minimally tweaked and optimized for less noise and integration with the AI processor.

This is likely why a company like Sony still utilizes investors as part of the sensor creation process. We will know when a new sensor is being implemented in a new mirrorless camera because we will see a spike in capital expenditure
My guess is that the Sony Imaging team already has a sensor design and logic suite for the next gen of cameras but is not yet green lit to build the camera.

From the attached slide we can see that Sony is reducing expenses until 2026. New tech is coming from Sony but we will need to be patient. I am certain, 2027 will see some exciting developments from Sony like the TRISTA technology.

UGreen Introduces Two Easy-to-Use Desktop NAS Devices

Share

UGreen introduced their most affordable NAS solutions:

I’m one of those disorganized photographers with nearly a dozen hard drives scattered around, full of photos and memories. Here are just some of my hard drives:

I know it’s ugly :)

Lately, I’ve been seriously considering a NAS to finally get everything organized and secure. I was ready to go for the UGREEN NASync DXP4800 Plus 4-Bay, but this new entry-level version might actually be enough for my main goal: safely storing my images.

Asked ChatGPT to make this side by side comparison and I think I will get the DH4300:

Side-by-side feature comparison
Feature UGREEN NASync DXP4800 Plus UGREEN NASync DH4300 Plus
Bays 4 × 3.5″/2.5″ hot-swappable 4 × 3.5″/2.5″ not hot-swap
Extra slots 2 × M.2 NVMe (for cache or storage) None
CPU Intel N100 Quad-Core Realtek/ARM (less powerful)
RAM 8 GB DDR5 (expandable to 32 GB) 4–8 GB fixed
Ethernet Dual 2.5 GbE (link-aggregate to 5 Gbps) Single 2.5 GbE
HDMI 4K HDMI output No HDMI
Performance High (Plex 4K, virtualization, Docker, backup server) Medium (media streaming, file sharing, family backup)
Target user Power users, prosumers, small office Home users, simple backups
Price 💰 Higher (~€600–700 without disks) 💰 Lower (~€300–400 without disks)
Best for Heavy workloads, media hub, professional backup Family photo/video storage, easy NAS use

I will buy four Seagate IronWolf Pro 24 TB disks and use the RAID 5 setting. This gives me 72 TB of usable space (with one drive’s worth of space reserved for parity).

Here is a review of the new entry level NAS:
