i-Micronews posted a highly interetsing interview with Yasuhiro Ueda (Sony Senior General Manager of Image Sensor Business). Here are some key info:

1) Sony steps out from the CCD sensor business:As a sensor division it was then just a matter of course to consider our transition to CMOS sensors, as they have much greater speed advantages.

2) Sony A7s sensor:Lately academic demonstrations have proven light can still be acquired even when the sensor’s aperture is extremely small. This kind of technology is applied in our bigger cell size α7S SLR digital camera, capable of taking pictures in a pitch dark environment.

3) Sensor development depends from the customers demand:Some people ask for greater pixel count as the application range is higher. On the other hand some find it bothersome and just ask for larger sensors.  The demand is coming from the customers and we are prepared to answer either way.

4) 3D sensor:We are and also have been interested in supporting the path of Dual cameras and likewise 3D camera to answer our customers’ needs, meaning the demand is coming from customers.

5) Mobile sensor:To reach that SLR level work has to be achieved with enabling technologies such as optical, image processing and sensors. We are and will continue challenging the SLR camera quality. Mobile phone cameras also have a bad video quality compared to broadcasting gear and similar to the SLRs we shall be aiming to challenge these quality levels.

6) The future three new application areas for CMOS sensors:First, it should be the automotive market. Then we believe the “new mobile imaging” market will grow. This is a field consisting of action cameras, drone cameras and new moving region concepts. The third is an area which we defined as a “sensing region”. Traditionally we defined sensing in respect to imaging to be an enabler in order to enjoy high quality images.

(SR3) Sigma to announce a new 24mm f/2.8 E-mount lens in October?

Share

sigma_sony

(SR3) Sigma rumors got info about a possible Sigma 24mm f/2.8 DN Art APS-C E-mount Lens that could be released in September. This would become the fourth APS-C E-mount lens in their lineup after the [shoplink 34452 ebay]19mm (here)[/shoplink], [shoplink 34453 ebay]30mm (here)[/shoplink] and [shoplink 34454 ebay]60mm (here)[/shoplink] E-mount lenses.

One more Sigma rumor:

(SR1) Sigma Rumors and I also got a weird info from another source about a 23mm FE Sigma lens (unlike the 24mm ART APSC E-mount lens rumored above). We both think this rumors is very likely fake. Anyway, here it is:

“I do have confirmation that FE support from Sigma is actually further along than the DPreview interview with the Sigma CEO would suggest. Sigma developed and will be releasing a FE 23mm f2.8 lens to market either September or October 2015.  This focal length was strategically chosen to complement the new FE 28/2 Sony has released.  It will have 10 elements in 8 groups, and 9 rounded diaphram blades.”

But I am 99% sure this one is fake.

First 24-240mm FE unboxing and hands-on test. In Stock at Sony USA!

Share

[shoplink 34396 ebay]FE24-240mm-sony[/shoplink]

One week earlier than expected the new 24-240mm FE lens is already in Stock in USA at [shoplink 34396 ebay]official Sony eBay Store (Click here)[/shoplink]! It’s also in Stock at [shoplink 34395 ebay]Fotomundus Germany (Click here)[/shoplink], [shoplink 34394 ebay]Richmondcamera UK (Click here)[/shoplink] and Digitalrev.

And the very first unboxing review has been posted on the German Sony User Forum. You can see image samples taken with the A7II and A6000. The reviewer says:
1) First impression at unboxing was…damn is it heavy! But it still an ok weight if you compare it to the much heavier 70-200mm FE
2) The Zoom ring is stiff but that’s a good news
3) OSS in combination with the A7II is outstanding.
4) The max aperture on different focal lengths is:
f/3,5 up to 30mm
f/4,0 up to 45mm
f/4,5 up to 55mm
f/5,0 up to 70mm
f/5,6 up to 100mm
f/6,3 from 100mm
5) Close focusing distance is 50cm up to 80cm. That’s by far much better than the 135cm from the SEL 70-200.
6) AF is very precise but not really super fast.

The lens is also shipping in Vietnam, first unboxing video in Vietnamese on Youtube. The only English review about that lens so far has been posted at BHphoto (Click here) who says:

In my rudimentary testing I can say that when I focused on something at the telephoto end and zoomed out, the focus did not shift noticeably, which is a big plus. The main drawbacks for video are the stiff zoom barrel, as well as the distortion, which is not as easily corrected for video users. Still, if you have to have a large zoom range and don’t want to splurge for the Sony FE PZ 28-135 lens, then this is certainly a viable option.
It’s not going to be the sharpest or most light-sensitive lens but, in my testing, I think it does well enough to use in place of other FE lenses—in most circumstances.
