First look with the Sony A77II and new XAVC-S codec.

Note on video from Cinema5d: Before you watch the video: I was attempting trying a new audio wireless device which unfortunately does not work well with this camera. The result is a distorted audio track. The camera it-self produces better sound then in this video.

Cinema5D (Click here) tested the Sony A77II with the new firmware upgrade which improves autofocus and adds XAVC-S codec:

The new Sony A77mII will not make loyal Canon or Nikon users to replace their camera with that one (unlike the case of the Sony A7s). Also, if you are looking for an easy way to use your Canon lenses, then Sony’s E-mount is the way to go. If you are in the market for a good APS-C photo camera that can shoot good quality video, then the Sony A77mII is a very valid option.

It’s certainly good news to see that Sony took care of current A77II owners and offered that major update. Hope they will keep doing that on all cameras just like Fuji does!

We visited Shore Acres, near Coos Bay on the coast of Oregon the day after Thanksgiving to look at the Christmas light display, but arrived early enough to take in the sunset over the big waves first. I like the many tiny little lights, but this is so much better.

Small bug warning on the A7II image stabilization (can and will be fixed by Sony via firmware upgrade)

Sony a7 II Sensor Stabilization/SteadyShot INSIDE Test (filmed with a7S) by Tony Northrup.

Like on any new camera release there are always annoying bugs that hopefully will be fixed soon. The A7II has a strange bug on the 5 axis stabilization settings. David Sampson (Viramati) found the bug and Jono Slack sums it up at Dpreview:

If you attach a 3rd party lens after using an OSS (eg the 24-70 FE) lens then IBIS does not work
If you attach a 3rd party lens after using a non OSS lens (eg the 55 f1.8) then IBIS does work.

This is a bug that can (and I am sure Sony “will”) be fixed via firmware upgrade.

UPDATE: There is a workaround to fix the issue when it appears. David S. sent me this:

If you unmount (take off) an OSS lens without turning the camera off (or at least turn it off after you have removed the lens) then when you attach a third party (dumb) adaptor ‘steady shot’ (IBIS) continues to work normally. Of course this is not a thing a photographer would normally do as it usually common sense to turn the camera off when changing lenses so would still benefit from a firmware upgrade
