Fullframe poll coming soon (most commented post ever on SAR!)

With exactly 400 comments (at the time of wirting) the Sony full frame suggestion article has become the most commented article ever on SAR! Click here to read them all: http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/we-need-your-suggestions-for-the-next-sony-fullframe-cameras/
Today I will sum all your suggestions and next week I will start the official poll where you will be able to vote the best new (dream) features of the future Sony cameras. Of course the poll will have zero influence on the new FF products coming in 2012. But I am sure Sony will take notice of the voting results!
One more news: From September 16 to September 26 I will travelling for work. I should have Internet almost every day but please be patient if I don’t answer your emails.

9 months ago |You should consider making a poll for registered users only, Andrea. To make it’s value higher.
Because otherwise it can be quite easily manipulated. I don’t want to give away specific method how to do this, but I for one can cast new vote every few seconds on your open-to-everyone poll (and I bet many many people are aware of this as well). If you’d like some more details feel free to mail me, though there isn’t much you can do besides limiting it to registered users.

9 months ago |There is an attempt to compare the noise in the NEX-5N RAW files after resize to 16mp.
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1037&message=39333824
(the data are also available for G-3 and 60D, but not included into the graph)
According to the test
5N at low-light a quarter of stop ahead of the old matrixs (А580), and by one stop better then A55. A77 – same as А55. So Nex-5 will be a quarter of stop better then Nex-7. At low ISO it will have one stop advantage.
Marek
9 months ago |Thanks for the info. A77 = A55 at 16Mpx is in line with my expectations. 24Mpx in cropped sensor is overkill. To make use of such resolution we would have to buy expensive lenses (G, CZ) which are out reach for most amateurs like me.
I’d like to see an option to take down-sized files RAW files. 12Mpx is enought for me most of the time. It would ever make continuous shooting longer then 1s.

9 months ago |I don’t know where the low ISO comment in the last sentence came from as it’s not supported by the data. The difference between the NEX-5N and A77 seems a relatively constant one, so the same should be expected for the NEX-7.

9 months ago |“quarter of stop better” – oh gash, what a horrible difference, I almost faded away.
Such error is within margin of measurement error. There’s nothing to talk about really. They are identical for all purposes.

9 months ago |Make the poll realistic!
Ofcourse everybody wants ‘Ferrari’ performance or options when asked in a poll, but almost nobody will spend that kind of money on the final product.
Maybe you can call the poll: “I’m willing to pay extra $$$ for these features on the next FF Sony:”
+ list.

9 months ago |The best Sony can do: SLT and DSLR full frame.
New developed A99 SLT.
And DSLR – they have the A900 body, just have to fit new sensor, AF, video and etc.

9 months ago |To much emphasis is being given to about a quarter stop advantage in light levels that most photographers use for less than 5% of photos instead of detail on the other 90%. Sony will probably make 2 FF sensors so for 1 to be 24MP (11MP APS-c) and the other 16MP (7 APS-c )would be stupid and loose sales on all those Pro studio Photographers who use flash to make sure iso 50 or 100 is used all the time. The lowest noise APSC cameras use 16MP so a 36MP FF should be min. with up to 54MP (24 APS-c) for non-low light pros.
Marek
9 months ago |54MPx is probably too much for FF because it would outperform almost all lenses. Thouse from advertizing and fashion, who realy need such resolution, already have MF camera. If SONY makes cheap 16Mpx FF, I will probably buy it. I realy want clean ISO 800 like Nikon D3s.
Don Cox
9 months ago |The sensor should outperform all lenses – it should never be the limiting factor in image quality.
Better sensors will act as a challenge to lens designers and manufacturers, so the overall standard will rise.
Not all images need extreme sharpness of very fine detail, but even an ordinary user with little experience of photography is liable to visit famous places such as Venice or the Grand Canyon, where views with as much very fine detail as possible are just what you want.
For applied work such as photographing large paintings, the higher the resolution the better.
Sky_walker
9 months ago |“The sensor should outperform all lenses” – maybe for people who are aware of what they are doing – it really should. But everyone else? Sensor should have notably worse resolution than lens. Why? Because thanks to this it comes out as outstanding one in all test. See: Nikon D3s. Called a god of DSLRs by Nikonians -> modern sensor with pathetic resolution on huge area == win-win situation.
Carl
9 months ago |As long as they don’t give us 54MP with an AA filter robbing most of the resolution gains.

9 months ago |It’s seems pretty simple – make sensor that has very large MP count with pixel binning capability. Everybody will be happy.
Large MP – Picture with great detail, well lighted subject
Binned picture – Improved DR, less noise in low light situation
Raghav
9 months ago |Amen to that… I was hoping that even the A77 will have pixel binning…

And I agree – there should be a price range on the poll(s) as well.

9 months ago |a 48mp sensor binned to 12mp for better DR and noise it would kill medium format because if 40mp backs are enough even though there are 80mp ones then at this price it will be mf shooters dream
does a 36mp FF be equal to aps-c 16mp sensor at high iso? (my threshold limit is 3200 for the 16mp aps-c and 6400 for FF so a FF at 36 would still be better than an aps at 16?)
Marek
9 months ago |No, FF with 36Mpx would be worse then aps-c at 16Mpx. They whould be equal if FF is 32Mpx. FF has double the size of 1.5 crop APS-C.
FF with 48Mpx would not probably kill MF because lenses on MF perform better on this resolution. And with current state of CMOS tech, noise would be visible even at ISO 200 like on A77.
passer-by
9 months ago |FF is approximately 2.3 times larger than APS-C.. thus 16 x 2.3 = 36.8.. so 32-38mp is the ideal MP range if they decided to use the NEX-5N sensor tech. FF version of the latest 24.3mp sensor would have a whooping 55.9mp!
I don’t have any experience with any of MF lenses or camera, so I can’t comment about the performance. But AFAIK, the larger the sensor, the more vignetting there will be. But yeah, medium format is a class of its own..

9 months ago |Please, put this FF sensor in a new designed Zeiss Ikon, pleaaaaase !

9 months ago |Sony should have an official survey that will make it into their decision making process. Only those who have an 850/900 should be allowed to submit their opinions. That will filter out a lot of the noise and BS.

9 months ago |Some thoughts:
+1 to keeping the sensor at a higher level of detail than the lens. I agree that the sensor should NEVER be the resolution limiting factor. Keep those lens makers innovating!
+1 to pixel binning option. Sometimes, getting a clean image is much more important than getting a “big” image. This should be an option that can be flipped on/off.
Some other thoughts:
+1 to making the sensor module interchangable. Look, we all love the handling of the A700, A850, and A900. Had those been built with an interchangable module, we would have been able to upgrade the sensor and maybe the processor(s) and kept the OVF, handling, same vgrip, etc. Ricoh just put out a sensor module with a lens mount. Sony has their SLT adapter for NEX. Proof that it can be done.
+1 to making the buffer expandable.
Sony could open up a whole new market for parts and accessories so they can upgrade and improve their camera user base incrementally and not in an all or nothing manner.
Want faster AF? Upgrade the AF module. Need more processing power to use the AF module or want more buffer space? Upgrade the processing core and the buffer modules. Want to switch to full frame in your camera body? Swap out the sensor module. Can choose to go with one that has anti-shake or not. Left handed instead of right handed? Switch the grip to the other side of the body. Etc.

9 months ago |we all know sony been developing/research on “PD in Sensor” i dont really need PD in 32mp sensor… its so simple if they just PD a 1-2mp sensor for the LV (like A550 LV sensor, but with PD built in), use it as secondary sensor! then the main sensor will remain ‘off’ state, thus the main sensor remain cool, current DSLT is making the sensor hot, thus all the silly noise appear.
also i wish they really put in consideration to let RAW selectable size, L M S.
