Sony NEX-7 review at Techradar and Whatdigitalcamera

Techradar (Click here) just posted a new review. Of course do they like the camera but I want to higlight one of the very few negative points about the camera: “A lightweight CSC with a 24.3Mp sensor may be ideally suited to landscape photographers, but the lack of a suitable wide-angle optic may be just as off-putting as the camera is tempting. This is a real shame, because the lightweight design of the body and the excellent resolving power of the sensor should make this an ideal application for this camera.” Oh yes, the camera has no real faults, we need the right lenses now Sony. That’s it.
There is one more NEX-7 review written by WhatDigitalCamera (Click here): “With high expectations the NEX-7 succeeds on many levels, but with the CSC market highly competitive this high-priced model does also finds its limitations where focusing and design are concerned. Saying that, the NEX-7 is an impressive mix of features, high-resolution image quality and excellent 1080p movie mode. For some it’ll be the perfect camera, though with an ‘indefinite delay’ due to production problems you may want to get those pre-orders in to be among the first to own one…“.

7 months ago |Before pre ordering a Nex 7 I prefer to wait and see what Fuji and Leica are going to show soon.

7 months ago |Leica’s in a totally different league my friend. Fuji’s understandable, but how does waiting for what Leica’s releasing effect your choices?

7 months ago |I’m a Leica shooter in film and Sony shooter in digital (quite schizophrenic I admit). I have interesting lenses to put on the Nex, both in M an alpha mounts, but Leica have plans to announce a mirrorless system different from M system for the next year. If nex 7 is delayed too many months I can wait for the Leica system, even if it’s more expensive… at least for comparing purposes. I’m not in hurry… I shoot everyday with what I have in hand and results are not bad… or if they are it’s because me, not the equipment.

7 months ago |Just get a sony lens adapter to mount your A-mount lenses or what ever brand you have.

7 months ago |Sorry to say that Sony has once again came out with an average half-ass camera with little or no E-mount lenses available for it. Sure you can use A- mount lenses with it, or even some of the older Minolta Maximum lenses.
Sony needs to get off there asses and give what the folks want and need more then anything else…an good assortment of E-Mount lenses.
Wake up Sony!!

7 months ago |You’re right. First the NEX 7 is SUPER expensive. Next, the lenses are not cheap in price but are a piece of shit. Sorry my French but they are. Total setup: $1400. Way too much!

7 months ago |We obtain better results with M-Mount lenses on Nex-5 than on Nex-7 because of the microlenses technology. Come on, Sony, it’s ridiculous ! The Nex-7 is the most appropriate camera for M-Mount lens photographers, and you ignore them. That’s just a shame. I have to give up so many excellent features of the Nex-7, buying a Nex-5 just because my priority in the final good quality image.

7 months ago |Get it line……..
I’ve been asking Sony to stop relying on old Minolta optics and produce A-mount lenses for years.
Sony brags in its magazine ads that the new a77 has 30 lenses………
Both Canon and Nikon has 130 lenses
Now, Sony has another camera mount that it just refuses to develop lenses for.
It is becoming more clear all of the time that Sony is a consumer electronics company, and Sony makes its money by marketing new products each and every year and not about supporting a platform.
You will get a new camera model, maybe several but don’t expect products like lenses as its not Sony’s business model.
As someone who keeps hoping for an aggressive roadmap of lenses to compete with Canon or Nikon’s for several years I don’t expect to see many quality lenses soon for NEX.

7 months ago |Well, I’m usually bashed here, when pointing out Sony can’t compete against Canon’s or Nikon’s lens range, but that’s nothing but the truth and this company famous for their consumer electronics won’t be able to change this. I love my NEX-5 with my manual lenses anyway and discovered the SEL-16F28 with the two converters as comparatively cheap wide angle option even with the quality limitations (Hey, still hoping for Lens Compensation with Firmware 05!). But I’m wondering, why opening the E-Mount specifications for free in February so far brought not a single announcement of third party lenses…

7 months ago |+1. loving the m-mount lenses, but i have to “downgrade” from a NEX7 to a NEX5N just to use it???
J-Man
7 months ago |NEX5 does not have offset micro-lenses, 5N & C3 do, what evidence do you have that says the 7 does not.
I’m getting a 5N to hold me over till the 7 is available, or if Fuji’s mirrorless is what we hope it will be, then there is secretive Canon, who knows what they will do next year.
Arnold
7 months ago |Steve Huff did test the NEX 7 and it doesn’t have micro lenses, how stupid is that !
That plus lesser low light capabilities, I will buy the 5N.

7 months ago |Just Sony said that there is no microlenses in Nex-7. Moreover, in different reviews, we can see the results with a Nex-5n and the Nex-7 on the same photo with the same M-Mount lens : color shift on Nex-7 and not on Nex-5n with better sharpness….

7 months ago |solution = NEX6N!!!

7 months ago |So, after waiting so long for the Nex-7, I have canceled my preorder from amazon that I purchased it the second day available.
5n with canon fd adaptor is on the way, I hope the fuji offering isnt too awesome!

7 months ago |7n is probably in the works…

7 months ago |In the end, the best feature the NEX 7 has is the viewfinder. This is the only reason, no kidding, I’m waiting for it. I hate the back screens. Try to make a picture in a sunny day!

7 months ago |… and the “real” dials, and the hot shoe.

7 months ago |I bet the 9N and NEX-11 are also in the works….

7 months ago |wishful thinking. Besides do you really want those before a more complete lens system? Lenses first.

7 months ago |received my a77 on 11.11.11…..the jpeg high iso noise is an issue..hope they’ll fix it with the coming firmware…overalll…im soooo happy with the camera
Igy
7 months ago |The color shift is present on the nex 7 with wide angle M lenses. From 35mm and up, 5n and 7 are pretty much the same, with 5n having slightly better noise handling at high iso, not sharpness, the 7 wins there. At least, thats what we see in steve huff’s review of the 7.

7 months ago |Err? I don’t see how a crop sensor camera is ideal for landscapes but then again, I dont shoot landscapes… I also think Sony is giving E-mount plenty of love, what with the release of the 30mm macro, the 55-210mm zoom, the 50mm f1.8 and the Zeiss in this year alone. How can anyone argue otherwise? How many new lenses did Nikon or Canon launch in the same timeframe? And for higher end glass, there’s also the new adapter for A-mount.
SonyA77
7 months ago |Because of the resolution. The field of view is fine with a wide lens.
andrew
7 months ago |there is a 10mm f2.8 and a 12mm f2.8 lens available for the nex?? what are these reviewers talking about? It’s unfortunate these “reviewers” are given some sort of credence. In techradar’s review, there is not one mention of peaking. So either NEX7 doesn’t have it, or techradar failed to acknowledge one of the biggest benefits to the nex system.
yes i am speaking of the adapters and I am aware of their downsides, but on what other system can you get a 10mm fisheye AND a 16mm lens for $400?
Clyde
7 months ago |From the quote: “…but the lack of a suitable wide-angle optic may be just as off-putting…”
Have they never heard of the Zeiss 24mm f1.8 E-Mount?
matgay
7 months ago |24mm apsc = 35mm.
NOT wide angle anymore

7 months ago |Something VERY STRANGE on this image from Techradar NEX-7 sample page…
See here for full resolution image… What is this?
http://mos.futurenet.com/techradar/Review%20images/PhotoRadar/Sony/nex-7/Images/SonyNEX-7_019.JPG
Look at the man and woman bottom/left/midfield… What’s going on the the mans glasses? There is a double image. And he has TWO MOUTHS!
Now look at the children on the right. The girl in the stripe shirt far right has a double image of her right leg too.
Exif data on this image states 1/60th shutter speed at f10. That’s not slow enough to give a double image. Perhaps a 2 second shot on tripod might produce this. But at a 1/60th ss, at most, we should see motion blur… NOT DOUBLE IMAGE.
What the heck is that?
Paul
7 months ago |Clyde, It looks like the image was shot with the auto HDR function that took 3 shots at different exposures to compensate for the bright sky. Then it combined them. The two mouths are a byproduct of that.
E
7 months ago |Yep, I’ve seen similar effects on my Sony 580 with the HDR function on.
Gunnar
7 months ago |Sony: now you guys have delayed the availability of the NEX7, please use the time to add offset microlenses to the sensor!! PLEASE
Mist
7 months ago |if microlenses are used, will the image quality decrease when other non-E-mount lenses attached via an adapter?
matgay
7 months ago |just try the lenses on the fantastic NEX5N!
Rob
7 months ago |Am I being naive here, how is 30 lenses not enough for people? seriously some people need to get a grip, sony’ve got almost all the basics covered in even the professional range
Zeiss 16-35 f/2.8
Zeiss 24-70 f/2.8
70-200 G f/2.8
Zeiss 85 f/1.4
Zeiss 135 f/1.4
70-400G
300mm 2.8
500mm f/4 which should be released soonish
Seriously what more could people need? theres only like 1 or 2 lenses that the mass majority of people would want, that being a 12-24 and a 50mm 1.2 Im assuming :L

7 months ago |is it possible that Sony sabotage the sensor ( not puttig microlense), for sole purpose to sell they own lenses ? comon !! after public complain about nex 3,5 Rediculas menu now this !?
Aero
6 months ago |It’s physically impossible to install micro lenses like NEX-5N’s on NEX-7 since NEX-7 has a back-luminous sensor, which gives little gap between each photodiode.
